I do hope that for everything VV's virtual trainer does become a mainstay because I think it is that thing we both hunger for. Just needs to be more anal (make every boss able to be an option in single battle, can still gate rewards to the multi-battles) as well as modify the stock a bit (I want to be able to make team comps to switch too instead of auto-switching). Furthermore you could have NG+ Virtual Trainer gate NG+ amenities to make tinkering more convenient (massively increased stock size, 100% compendium cost, expanded/cheaper shop, etc.).

I do wonder if the next step for the Demon Haunt would be something like DBXV2's mentor system, where instead of a divine being we're back to being demonic/human and closer to equal grounds to demons (maybe starting as a 'student' of sorts as their whispers as they teach you how to use skills instead of an essence system). At which point there could be more dynamic relationships for your demons. It wouldn't be social links b/romance but rivalries that could unlock extra boss fights, shield brothers/sisters, partners in crime, a mini-alignment rep as you both philosophize about the path you've chosen, etc. they can influence alignment, influenced by your alignment, or be unrelated to alignments and give you more room to flex who you are in-game. Maybe they could remember post-fusion if their affinity was high enough.

All right, when is an SMT game going to let me do something like that. I feel like there's a lot of potential in the essentially basic mechanic of simply choosing how many, which, and in what position you summon your demons at the beginning of a battle. It'd be really cool to get to hand pick my demons for the encounter in front of me at the start of the battle. Most of these games only let you summon or change out one demon at a time during a fight, so I'd like to see them tackle a game balanced around more selective summoning.

It doesn't really scratch the same itch. I'd like reactive, per encounter team building where you get to tactically deploy your stock in response to the immediate threat before you. Even being able to rearrange multiple demons at once and multi-summon would greatly help emulate the idea.
I wouldn't even care if it means giving up a turn to do it. I get to see all of these other summoners doing it, and I'd like a system that can recreate that on the player side.

What I really dislike in V is having to actually jam pleromas into MC's skill slots rather than having equipment for it or a one and done Omni pleroma skill like in Apocalypse. For sure, but I think there's also quite a bit you can do challenge-wise if you design the game around it. You can do more puzzle-like encounters where hot-swapping demons for certain attack types and resistances becomes more important. In many SMT games, a particular boss fight is a game of trial and error where you enter with your usual team, either beat the boss or lose, and then rebuild your team to exploit weaknesses or stonewall their offense. If you have a whole stock you can pick from and rearrange more efficiently then those same fights can shake up that loop and allows them to get weird with boss mechanics.

I think the row system works best for it out of the existing types, but I think Atlus could stand to try a new direction that strikes a balance between TRPG and the usual turn-based systems they use. Think of a half-way between Devil Survivor and traditional SMT gameplay. Maybe Persona 1 would actually be a good comparison with its range grid.
I'm imagining a system where there are ideal ranges of engagement akin to Soul Hackers' existing rows and attack range bands, but with added directional positioning. Think less of a grid and more of a direction + range system. Some enemies would be weaker when approached from certain directions, but multiple enemies could be covering the each others' backs or reinforcing one particular direction. At the beginning of an encounter, you'd get to deploy demons in the "frontal" ranges and could circle around during the battle.
This might be overcomplicating what SMT is currently, but I'm super down for them trying to get innovative again. Devil Survivor is probably the closest to this idea currently, but I'd like it if it blended in more of the traditional SMT elements as well.

The SMT1 and 2 references are still there. They removed *some* of them in the 2020s part of the Arakana Corridor, however, most of them are intact. Also, Raidou XL is even more overt about her period of origin and how the Kuzunoha live in Tokyo Millennium. Then there is a whole quest taken from Raidou 2 where Asura/Ahura Mazda talks to great lengths about the war in 199X and he implies that Raido's future can turn 199X (and Raido himself talks about coming from the Showa Era instead of Taisho which confirms something that was only implied before).

4A's biggest problem is its bloated cast. I was just replaying it and I was really enjoying the atmosphere of the intro its a much better introduction than SJ and then Navarre shows up. If the game had just focused on Nanashi, Asahi and Dagda with the other characters having minor roles it would have been so much better.

Story and world wise yes, but gameplay wise absolutely not, if any game would benefit from a remake it would be 2. 2 works best if you watch all the routes, no need to play through them all since they are all so similar but watch them to get the full context and research what the translation patch changed from the original, also the visionary item cutscenes also help

Though there is hardtype mod for 2, so maybe that’s worth checking out (not to say 2 isn’t worth checking out, it definitely is)

Eh, execution is better than theory and SMT2 needed a lot more time in the kitchen to really make those plot points shine. I felt SMT1 told the better story and it got me pretty emotional with the heroine mind dungeon along with the whole spiritual journey.
