When I started playing Wuwa I was thinking Jiyan was going to enable SMOKIN SICK STYLISH combos where you would launch niggas in the air with his spear, switch to another character to juggle him, etc. He turns out to just be the unga bunga green man and to be fair I love him for that. I've said it before, but I initially fell in love with his design because he reminded me a lot of Zhao Yun from the Dynasty Warriors games.
When I actually saw his moveset for the first time, it really, really disappointed me and pissed me off that his normal string involved him using his broadblade.
Lupa is really the only spear character who fully uses the spear. Jiyan and Cammy are both holdovers from early Wuwa where they still combined moves from their equipped weapon type.
Imagine if Iuno actually punched people on account of her equipped weapon type being fists. That would suck. Thankfully, they no longer do that for newer resonators. Their equipped weapon type has nothing to do with their actual weapon.
Lupa has a broadblade as a weapon type equipped but uses her red spear for all her moves.

Only played genshin, but that game is more inclined to juggle multiple characters in its AQs. It also frequently has its per-patch limited-time events involving stories that bring back lots of old characters.

I'm not sure to what extent the latter is a good thing desu. Kuro has been putting all their dev resources into each patch's main story quest and it really shows in the presentation. Genshin's events, yeah, it's nice to see characters again, and it was charming to see things like sucrose and collei making friends. But the events also tend to feel like bloated filler, so I'm pretty tapped out of them after 5 years.

But it does feel a little awkward and forced how heavily wuwa's current story just focuses on the characters being sold that patch. Lupa's absence from the current arc is frankly weird, and it's unfortunate that the characters leading the Montellis and the Fisalias have never spoken. I think kuro could probably achieve better characterizations and economy of storytelling by having a slightly larger core cast per arc and making them talk to each other more often. Of course, that's assuming there would be some actual interesting inter-character dynamics that went beyond bland friendliness, which is basically the only thing we see in genshin. Gacha devs seem terrified of having playable characters that engage in anything resembling conflict.

Great presentation in part because they deep dive into characters. Phrolova's chapter and 2.2 are considered the best patches story-wise, rather than ensemble patches like 1.0, 1.2 and 2.0 because the narrative can laser focus on exploring the character's motivations, insecurities, choices and pay-offs in a stage created for them and without distractions. In genshin they are just juggling between many npcs and playable characters that everything just feel shallow and without proper build up (in a narrative sense, not in a lore sense that they dropped a reference to it and that's it). Stuff like chasca sister dying is a good example, you see her twice while doing random things including a stealth minigame, then she dies, chasca screaming and then she gets better and becomes the heroes. It felt so shallow and disjointed. It doesn't help that the companion stories, that are already often about npcs, were botched for village stories so you don't even get personal, like xilonen being about some woman abusing a kid I don't even remember anymore. There are exceptions though like characters blessed with multi-arc focus like furina, that they went back due to popularity like hu tao or that just got lucky with hangouts like faruzan or major event like Fischl and Mona.

Basically I'd rather a deep focused story for a character I like, like Lupa, Ciaccona and Phrolova than a shallow participation in multiple patches like Nilou or Keqing (who we only get that works too much, isn't good with relationships and likes fried chicken balls). Though kuro should aim to do better and win at everything, they should just add frequent side content with characters that aren't the focus.

You know, they missed a real big opportunity for visual story-telling with Augusta in retrospect.
Repeatedly it was said that Augusta's resonance ability is average at best and generally supposed to be weak, and she's only as strong as she is because of the extreme effort she put into training to not only master her forte, but also her swordsmanship and body.
This is why they really should have actually made her tacet mark appear the same as the four-star characters instead of the five-star mark.
It would have been fitting since she's supposed to have a weak forte but has nevertheless reached the pinnacle of strength in Septimont.

Regardless I said at the end, kuro should do better, but not the hoyo model where characters exist as archetypes for fanservice (like cyno making dad jokes and talking about tcg) and shipping rather than significative growth and evolution of the world. For comparison in genshin at this point it was the end of the civil war (with the poorly built up teppei death), which was basically resolved in a joke with sara misunderstanding kokomi (fake genius strategist joke) and it was basically never mentioned again, no one was punished (especially not raiden who became a moeblob later), and kokomi and raiden only meet years later in a card game that again was a joke that everyone was too scared to beat raiden. There is no consequences because everyone always has to be friends with everyone so they can participate in those fanservice events (but they didn't disappear at least), all conflicts just end and nothing that happened before matters. Keqing appearance was in defiance against gods, so in a sense it's a religious thing like phoebe and could be a space for personal conflict, but again all conflict disappear immediately even though she somewhat stayed (again appearing over a year later in the new year festival), looking just tsundere for zhongli and ganyu now.

I think the term "Mary Sue" is significantly harder to use in the context of video games where you control the MC. The issue with Mary Sues is that their presence prevents the audience from enjoying the game. In the case of video games, the player often projects themself onto the character they're playing, so they often enjoy pandering stuff.

What I gather of the plot:

The setting is one where spaces and creatures can be made from wavelengths.
The physical realm and metaphysical realm of thoughts and spirits are linked, and wavelengths from one realm can move into the other.
There are a number of catastrophes coming from the metaphysical realm into the physical: a giant black hole, a meteor, and goop that draws power from hedonism and sucks you into Hell. And echos.
The good guys are trying to stop these catastrophes and practice ethics while researching them. The bad guys are trying to harness it for their own ambitions and have no ethics while researching it, evoking disasters deliberately, fusing humans with echos, etc.

The hero of heroes part is over, but the fight was basically a challenge to the dark tide who couldn't have rover as the hero of heroes because he is unbound by the fate that was already written (in which the dark tide wins), so by making so augusta would lose her spot the dark tide must take control of her (not knowing it was eating a fragment of the imperator's air purifier weakening it from inside and giving a fighting chance for augusta to survive, together with the spirits of fallen heroes that never stopped fighting).

A few advice from me as a lore enjoyer:

1) Try to be in the right mood/mindset when doing a new story quest. Mellow and feeling like sitting down and playing through the story. I try to avoid doing story if I'm in more of a restless "just want to play the game and fight stuff" mood, sometimes I put it off for a day or two if I don't feel ready for it properly.

2) Play through slowly and take breaks if needed. Sometimes there are big lore drops or a lot of info from certain scenes or segments. Taking time after that just to let it sit so I can think or analyze it and process it. Use the backlog in the top right during scenes to re-read lines during scenes if something wasn't clear.

3) Not everything is meant to be understood right away. Especially "part 1" patches like this and the first half of 2.4. Sometimes we don't know and have to speculate or theorycraft and wait to see what happens later. Some stories like 2.4 are intentionally left vague so its hard to follow/understand until the end.

4) Make sure to know the fundamentals and do research or backreading to understand them if not. Otherwise its like trying to do advanced math without knowing basics like addition and multiplication. Make a fun day of going back and sifting the in-game database/glossary, wiki, lore youtube compilations, etc. And make notes so this stuff is common knowledge. It can be a lot of work but if you like the story it helps a ton.

5) To reinforce current/existing lore I like to go on youtube and find playthroughs. During my own play I might skip or overlook certain parts so going through it again vicariously helps pick up or reinforce stuff that will make more sense after seeing it all first hand. And some streamers are less cringe and have good commentary/observation that give another perspective or might point out stuff I didn't think about.
