I've figured out why I hate fighting the bugs. It's not about difficulty. It's because they're a laundry list of everything that makes an area in a game "that part" where you start to reconsider if you actually want to replay that game. They're the "water level" of factions.

1) The game already has abysmal LoS due to fog, which Arrowhead doubled down on with spore spewer/charger mechanics and then tripled down on with the Gloom and then quadrupled down on with the Sporeburst subfaction. Not being able to see feels like shit inherently.

2) They are melee rushdown horde enemies with disjointed hitboxes that will ragdoll you. Bots used to be the juggle kings with their rockets, but now it's bug tongues launching you around.

3) They are always faster than you, even if you're kitted exclusively for speed, so you WILL deal with everything. Even worse, they commit the ultimate water level sin: they actively fuck your movement speed.

4) They're mechanically boring. 90% of their gameplay is "close to melee and thrash around". Even their air units.

5) Melee as a whole is buggy as shit. Fleshmobs get the most flak for this but even on-launch Warriors were meleeing through walls and up cliffs. And as the "melee faction", it shows worst on them. Plus our own melee keeps getting nerfed for no fucking reason.

They aren't hard so much as they're tedious and unrewarding as fuck. They feel like a chore.

Arrowhead tried to cook with this one but like usual it came out undercooked. Still I give it a 10/10 since caves drastically change how you play the game compared to everything else so far

From what I seen there's a bug where only the host can't dodge the new warriors.

Meanwhile non-host kids can just walk back slightly and they miss their attacks every single time.

Also they're immune to melee Stagger. Which is fucking funny.

caves are better because the nature of the cave is a hard constraint on what they can do with it, and it also eliminates the primary annoyance factor bugs have, which is spawning all around you. If you are in a cave tunnel, you only have to worry about two directions, and your mobility is naturally limited. Outside, they spawn and move frequently enough that the pressure they put on you constrains your loadout to be able to alleviate that pressure in order to do anything at all, which limits you in dealling with all the other constraints they are saddling you with. And its even worse with quickjoins, because the one tool you have to deall with all that is premade coordination in loadouts and actions, and thats missing on quickjoins. And on top of all that, the pelican spazzing out means you are likely unable to extract even if you win. Its spazzing out on solo Fenmire D1s.

To echo a common sentiment from previous threads I like the new bugs and areas conceptually because they give things like grenade launchers a real niche, and I imagine that's what AH was trying to go for when they were designing them.

In practice they just don't feel fun at all to me though. If you happen to not have anything with demo force on hand to make them surface you're just fucked waiting for every single bug on the map to dig towards you unhindered. This is a really good point, HW2 for instance was never a story about Karen S'Jet, it was a story about Hiigara as a whole and their fight against the apocalyptic threat of the Vaygr, Karen was just the semi-human face of the good guys. That's what I mean, I wouldn't say they feel particularly difficult to deal with so much as it sucks just being forced to dodge and move back even more with the new bug type. It feels like they just exasperate what to me was already an unfun aspect of bugs which is the feeling that you're just constantly retreating and moving backwards except now you're forced to wait for their pop-up attack before you can shoot them at all if you happen to not have anything on hand to bring them up.

If you get a great spot/corridor to throw an HMG down for example it's effectively useless without someone with a demo force weapon right beside you nailing every single digger as otherwise the bugs will just burrow right up to you without you being able to do anything at all. It just doesn't feel like a fun interaction and I feel like they could have handled it slightly better from a balance perspective.

The Swedes have managed their best to try to fuck things up, but I'd argue that helldivers tapped into a similar chord with a different emotion during the intro scene where John Helldiver asks the viewer if we have what it takes to be free and "Cup of Libertea" starts playing. Having 20 respawns and playing as characters that die instantly to damn near anything touching them for a fraction of a second is terrible game design. The first game had a downed state you could be picked up from and was much better for it.

Ragdolling and aimpunch did not need to be features of this game. Arrowhead's insistance on ragdolling, to the point of removing shield backpack's immunity from it, is extremely ironic considering they think the playing field should be absolutely level based on what the players and enemies can do to each other. You can't ragdoll the enemy units in this game. Only they can ragdoll you.
