It is time for the 2025 Kichikuou Rance Hanipoll.
It has been over a decade since we last did a poll for KR - back in 2014 following the release of the translation.

Same format as most hannipolls - vote for your top 10 with number 1 getting 10 points and number 10 getting 1 point. Tie break is the number of people who voted for a character and final tie break is the highest ranking given by a single voter.
This is a bit different to the previous KR poll which was rank top 20.

The poll will be open for the entirety of September so if you are still playing KR you do not need to vote just yet.

I just thought of an absolutely awful way of cheating that would completely ruin the KR experience. I don't if the guide has the address code for Miki's probability of activating her nuke magic attack but if it has it, it would be stupidly overpowered to crank it to 100%.

this guy made an entire 100h+ game on rpgm taking obvious inspiration from r10: a world map where you pick "missions" each turn while also being constrained by time/turn limits, an ensemble cast, 'roguelite'-ish gameplay, branching stuff based on what you have or haven't done etc.
the presentation is as barebones as it gets though, I don't think there's a single original sprite, bgm or cg in the whole thing. it could definitely benefit from some budget

I was talking about games. As a reference, Eyuden Chronicles raised $4.5 million on Kickstarter, and the developers said that an JRPG could cost more than $50 millions. FFVI for the PSX cost was about $157–284 millions adjusted to inflation and including marketing. FFIX and FFX were cheaper to make. Unfortunately japanese developers don't usually share their budget numbers.

I just notice Rance has more than 10 games and somehow always managed to create a system where mages can never attack in melee like most games.

I think there's a theme with fiends' apostles, in that they're all genuinely devoted to their master and really want to help them. It's the opposite of most villain lackeys in RPGs who serve out of fear, greed, ignorance, or because they're forced to. Technically apostles are compelled by the blood to obey, but they're created for their loyalty. And creating them weakens the master too. So it's a genuine bond. Even after fiends die we see apostles striving to revive their masters, even though they're free now to do whatever they want.

So when they designed each fiend they probably asked "who would this one be adored by?" and for the queen of dragons it was a harem of cute boys of course. For Kayblis the only apostles he suffers are ones too weak to pose a threat, for Medusa it's a butler because she's too lazy to do things herself, for Ithere ironically it's a bunch of girls who aren't mind-controlled but just fell in love with him.

It just makes it funnier when Rance beats them and acts like a hero, like with Ithere's girls for example, he's actually trampling all over this bond formed over centuries because he wanted a foursome. But they're evil so it's a justice foursome.
