They changed the vibe in the rereleases with the added content. Taking player reception into account and altering important thematic elements is often a poor idea because popularity veers toward the vocal lowest common denominator. 4's original opening was perfectly fitting for the mood and setting of the game. The game as it was gelled with a lot of people and its popularity was built on what the game was. Ironically, by trying to pander to their audience they tampered with what worked about the game that made it so popular to begin with.

I actually largely disagree with this assessment for most things and I find it to be tired at the best of times and disingenuous at the worst. Do not put words in my mouth. I didn't say anything remotely like this in meaning. Pandering to the lowest common denominator leads to the simplification of themes and character writing to make it more digestible. That's why Golden added more SoL story events.

No, you merely misunderstood what I was getting at. Flanderization occurs because of the writers choosing to stress the quirky parts of characters because people responded well to them. It causes character writing quality drift as they lean into a few key traits because people identified with them or found them entertaining. Ned Flanders became more of a wacky, preachy neighbor because they were the most stark parts of his character, but in the process they left behind more of the understated parts of who he was. Even as a cartoon character, he became more of a caricature. In essence, flanderization occurs because of lazy writing, lack of inspiration, and pandering. I was not saying flanderization was at play here, but rather pointing to it as an example of what can happen if writers choose to pander to the lowest common denominator.
Consider this: Persona 4 became massively popular with its original release. Enough so that they thought it was worth porting. By changing the original significantly, they drifted away from some of the things that endeared it to many people to try and emphasize the brighter, cheerier parts of the game that many other people liked. There are those who will still like something in spite of that or only cared about the parts that ended up being emphasized, but there will always be a portion of people who liked the original thing as it was and feel it is diminished by those "additions."

Flanderization, as I stated, is what CAN come from pandering to the lowest common denominator. I don't think that they were 'trying to be' anything.
They were ultimately successful though in capturing a rural, lame and ordinary every day aesthetic with the CRT that many of us identified with on a fundamental level.
The 'TV screen' mirrors 'humanity' in the most profoundly simple way, it literally reflects us. This is the greater theme of the game and it's communicated instantly.

The way ordinary camera footage of the characters is interlaid with a shocking twisted corpse on the tower.... the kids entering their high school cut with the officers on duty as the clock ticks down.
It quite literally 'displays' in base visual communications the who/when/what/how of all the narrative elements without specifically telling you anything.
You see the major players, the setting, the race against the clock, and visual styles that will make the heart of the experience, but nothing is extravagant, it's all restrained
The song is experimental, the piano and trumpet melody at the beginning is unforgettable
The lyrics to the song are brief and subtly nudge the player to ask all sorts of questions

If you have any intelligence, you'd be able to instantly see what the greater conversation is by simply contrasting with the intro from Golden.
Golden does not contain the same kind of visual communication to the player about the experience they are going to have.
It does not contain the TV elements, or the newsclip/camera footage elements. It lacks showing you the school and the officers and the corpse of the victim is covered in vibrant rainbow colors.
It's a celebration of Persona 4, fanservice essentially. It's a fun (and lame) dancing animation with dazzling retro visual effects, and the song contains some good lyrics as well.

But because the elements of the visuals do not actually match up with the game and are far more extravagant, the additional colors fail to ask the player any questions and instead serve as a distraction from the image being shown.. So instead of showing you, the lyrics in the song literally TELL you instead.

Not a big fan of P4 but you can see its legacy in how the lyrics for the openings have changed. All of the modern Persona games are about relationships to some extent, but that is never the main focus of the narrative. P3 is a story about finding meaning in life and accepting death, and its opening is about confronting danger in the night, while FES feels a lot more aggressive with its rap which shows the interpersonal conflict. P5 is a story about breaking free of oppression, its opening lyrics are about breaking free, and Royal's lyrics evolve to be about choosing the way you live your life once you have that freedom.

P4's lyrics move from being about exploring a town and uncovering the nature of your own and other's psychology, to just making friends. It's no surprise that this is the case because P4's narrative doesn't really hold up as a strong mystery, and its characters aren't greatly developed. Of course people moved on to the slice of life fun times, what else would they do if they enjoyed P4?

Asking as I've just been murdered by Akechi in the interrogation room and, WHAT A TWEEST, *it was a hologram* yadda yadda. My intuition says that the bad ending is either failing to give Sae the 'correct' answers, thus she never connects Akechi to the 'true culprit' ... which seems unlikely, as you've spent your time building up that Social Link, or simply ratting out your teammates instead ... which also seems unlikely, as I'd also expect the game to 'but thou must' railroad you onto the 'correct' path.

I'd look it up on the wiki, but I'd rather not be spoiled if I'm wrong.
