Should I just pass all available classes before I try to do story missions? Maybe getting chased down for truancy is part of the fun, but I don't like it yelling at me to be somewhere else when I'm obviously in the middle of shit. Like just fuck off a little bit.

Tired of seeing that one, to be honest. We should be able to have Linux gaming discussions on /v/ without the opening post being blatant spam.
This post (from another thread) was pretty funny though. Not sure if it was serious. I should probably have a little faith in humanity and assume it was a joke.

There's a bait thread about this game on the shitposting board, and I'd never heard of it so I looked it up. Apparently it has a Linux build, but it's Deck Verified for Proton 10. It's a bit disappointing to see that for new games that release with Linux support. This might be bullshit because I don't remember who said it, but is it really true that Valve only tests with Proton unless developers specifically request otherwise? Or is
>"Deck Verified"
>look inside
>it uses Proton
just a pathetic mark of shame for a developer's ability to port a game to Linux? I'm never surprised to see that an old game's outdated Linux port is skipped for Valve's compatibility verification, but damn. Imagine knowing that you can just let players use Proton, but saying "nah I got this" and going out of your way to provide real Linux support, and then it releases and the most prominent Linux device defaults to the Windows version anyway.

Never mind that. I was wrong.
I thought the game just sets the input type based on whether a controller is plugged in on start-up -- and, well, that's exactly what it does by default -- but gamepad controls can also be explicitly disabled from the pause menu. So I can just do that for biology class. If there's a stick sensitivity or deadzone adjustment option then I'm too lazy to find it, and doing anything precise with a thumb stick is always hell anyway.

Sounds shader caches are coming to DXVK because the new dxbc-spirv shader compiler is slower.

I've never modded a game enough to need a mod manager, and so I can't personally vouch for this, but one of the links in the thread opener is a mod manager for Linux:
It might be worth a look.
The extent of my experience in modding on Linux is using simple DLL drop-ins like widescreen patches, and the only extra work they require on Linux is a Wine DLL override.

If I quickly move into a battle that'll load and run just fine, so it's 20-30 seconds of staring at the campaign world map that does it. Haven't found anyone else that's reported the same issue.
Persists through various versions of proton. I'd just use native but that's two patches behind at the moment.

That's the async shader version iirc. It's no longer needed (unless your mesa/nvidia driver is so old that it doesn't support graphics pipeline shader compilation, and that would be old distros or old Windows drivers).
Reading up on the current official upgrade process from Debian 12 to Debian 13 has made me realize that I've made a poor choice in distro from the start.

>Bully: Scholarship Edition | Steam version, with SilentPatch (for unlocked frame rate) and ThirteenAG's widescreen fix (which, ironically, is used here to avoid vertical stretching to 16:10 from natively supported 16:9) | 2025-09-05 21-30-16-882421385.png
and it seems that 4chan removed a single character from it. Meanwhile, the full filename is in fact at the exact limit for Mint's file system, which won't let me add any more characters, but that's actually a coincidence. I didn't realize I was hitting the maximum length when I named it, but in hindsight, I should have done that on purpose because it made for a good test.
So 4chan's name length limit is only one character shorter? I thought there was more of a difference. Maybe something changed since last time I saw the site eat part of a filename.

Does this mean that now I have to switch to legacy drivers package?
Aside from maybe using `-window` or similar to put a couple of games in windowed mode, I don't think I ever used the launch options field on a Steam game prior to using Linux. Was there ever anything interesting to do with it on Windows? Or is it used only for occasionally passing game-specific arguments to the few games that are actually configurable as such? It can be used for so many other things on Linux --
>setting environment variables for Wine/Proton, Vulkan/DXVK, etc. before %command%
>passing all of %command% as arguments to some other program like gamescope, strangle, mangohud, gamemoderun, etc.
>doing wild shit like `bash -c 'exec "${@/normal.exe/other.exe}"' -- %command%` to alter parts of %command% (in this case for running a different executable)
>using `> ~/output.txt 2>&1` to print any output/errors to a file and yes I know about PROTON_LOG=1 but not everyone exclusively runs Windows games like some kind of Windows lover
>putting entirely separate commands before or after %command%, separated by `;` or `&&`, for totally customized pre- or post-game scripting
-- and I wonder how much of this is even possible on Windows. Since passing arguments to a game is the only Windows use case I remember, I'm not even sure if the %command% part (which is optional if nothing comes before it) exists on Windows. I'm guessing it does just because the use of %% to denote a variable looks like a Windows thing.

I have never tried that, arch wiki just says to use the old driver. My guess is that the driver has a gpu check and refuses to run with incompatible gpu. I guess we will find out next month if nvidia updates their driver after that. I have a gtx 1080 that will be affected by this.

I'm the dev. SystemD isn't needed. Its only needed if you press the button to add the ui to system startup. If you want to add the ui to system startup and use another init system then you would instead just have to add the command "gsr-ui" to a system startup script.

I installed Bottles for non-Steam Windows games because the Lutris developer told Mint users (me) to fuck off, and because I'd rather understand how to make a game work and do it myself than rely on what seemed to be the main selling point of Lutris: random users' probably outdated install scripts. But I don't really love Bottles either.

Quake II was never my favorite but I'm thinking about giving it another chance.
How well does Quake II Remaster run with Proton? I know, Quake II runs natively on Linux since forever, but it's not my fault that Bethesda has been systematically going through their entire catalog of games that were already source-ported to Linux and releasing Windows-only remasters of them. I don't know of any source ports that fully support Quake II's remaster content yet. There is a Yamagi Quake II remaster fork, and maybe it's more playable than I think, but it looks like a lot isn't done.

same issue. Even if it were installed system wide steam is still sandboxed and I'd have to use some 'portal' shit or whatever flatpak calls it. I think the only way is to get it inside of steams sandbox itself but i don't know how to yet. I know what mangohud can do, i used it to do the same thing before but this distro is a little special. So everything that doesn't absolutely be system wide is in flatpak. Which in this case is steam.

just searched for them on the internet and using flatpak itself and installed them via it. 'flatpak install' easy stuff. There are two gamesope versions on there with one being deprecated but neither of them worked. Also tried mangohud and gave it some extra permissions to read configs and make steam use it automatically but then games would just not launch at all.
Anyways I'll try 'injecting' libstrangle into steam later. Its not the end of the world having to use vsync for a bit.

btrfs wasn't made for drives that constantly read and write and its metadata fills quickly and you get fucked with no proper way of fixing it, also btrfs doesn't like power outages, sudden shutdowns because devs didn't account for that and you can get your drive corrupted, might as well give up on fixing that because again, there's yet again no proper way to do that

Filesystem was never a thing I even thought about. Just ext4 and go. But I'm reading into it now and really, they all seem perfectly serviceable. XFS probably is the best if you play new games with your 4K textures and 200 gig installs. Beyond that it seems to be a user specific issue.

This feels like the same thing as doing an undervolt. Statistically that does make it last longer. But I don't door dash every meal I have so if my drive ever shits the bed I can get a new one. SSDs also last pretty long now. Unless you are operating under constant load you're still in that 5 years minimum life span I'd imagine.

I'd only care about this if I was constantly writing data to the drive. As it 24/7 up time pulling data. But this is /lgg/ where everyone plays 6GB games from nearly 20 years ago and will write code for shits and giggles sometimes. I can't imagine anyone here having an SSD failure where XFS would have given more than a few weeks of extra life. Which even then that isn't how SSDs work because the amount of writes you have on a drive varies by a wide amount and can change over time. Unless you are running a Mastodon instance just use what you feel you want. And even then btrfs might have benefits there if they do have more robust systems for data backups and retention.

I'm not the other guy, but applying a factor of (1000/1024)^3 to convert from GB to GiB only explains how the advertised 1 TB size equates to a measured 931 GiB size. Any further shrinkage e.g. from 931 GiB to 929 GiB is probably just space reserved for the file system bookkeeping or something, right? 2 GiB seems large so maybe it's not that. But also, in practice, out of 1 TiB, that's nothing. I mean, if your storage is ever anywhere near 99.8% full, then you better be deleting shit or buying more storage.

Unfortunately, it seems not all of the cutscenes have been transcoded for Steam's shader cache. The opening cutscene works, and I did see that at least one of the "oops you let a character die" cutscenes also works, but this is what I get before the first boss.
Cutscenes can be fixed with Protontricks, and maybe GE Proton can do it as well, but I was hoping all the cutscenes would "just work" now that I saw that the first one was working. I suppose we should rely on Valve remotely transcoding videos for us anyway.
Anonymous

Here's the cutscene working after
>protontricks 283290 quartz
on the command line and
>WINEDLLOVERRIDES="winegstreamer="
in the launch options.
(I don't know why I have to disable winegstreamer.dll after installing quartz.dll, but whatever. All I can say is yes, both are needed. If I only install quartz.dll then the cutscene crashes the game, and if I only disable winegstreamer.dll then the cutscene just doesn't play at all.)
So the game is fully playable like this, but I'm going to undo these tweaks anyway, for the greater good. Apparently a cutscene will get automatically transcoded but only if enough people see those color bars, so I should at least do my part by failing to play the rest of them. I've already seen them before (and they're also on disk in MPEG format so I could just watch them outside of the game if I really wanted to see bad FMV).

And it ALMOST "just works". Maybe someday it will (for Steam users). And maybe it already does, for GE Proton users. I don't actually have GE Proton installed right now and I'm too lazy to go get it.

>>538916373 >>538916854 don't.
I'm not sure why his mouth graphics are fucky, but it's not a Linux issue, because a screenshot on the game's Fandom wiki shows the same visual glitch.
By the way, almost all of the text of that wiki page
>https://nosferatuthewrathofmalachi.fandom.com/wiki/Desmodaui
is lifted verbatim from this FAQ/walkthrough
>https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/pc/917976-nosferatu-the-wrath-of-malachi/faqs/37705
(which starts with "please don't steal my work" but they did it anyway).
I knew Fandom was shit, but damn.
To some wiki editor's credit, however, the one piece of information I needed also happens to be the one paragraph NOT blatantly stolen from that walkthrough. I had actually tried the walkthrough first, didn't find it, tried the wiki page, saw it was an exact copy, and almost gave up... but for some reason I checked the bottom of the page, and in the last paragraph:
>There is a bug where if you kill Desmodaui too quickly, he fails to appear in his coffin afterwards (it will be empty and already open).
Basically, holy water one-shots the boss on easy/medium, and doing that too quickly can break the game. This
>>538925261 was actually more than slow enough, but I didn't save the game after recording that video, so I was repeating the fight and killed him immediately. Then I ran around for 20 minutes wondering what obscure shit I needed to do in order to have him appear in his coffin, not knowing I had soft-locked.

It would be nice if Valve's automated video transcoding could just scan a game's files for MPEGs etc. instead of only being triggered by players actually hitting the cutscenes. My wife and I have been cleaning my fucking house and also preparing to replace some flooring.
In the process of doing so, I've temporarily moved my Linux machine away from the Ethernet cable, and I never intended to use my desktop as a damn laptop so I didn't put a WiFi adapter in the thing, so I am using an old USB WiFi dongle as a back-up. It's horrible.
(Actually it's not bad. I remember having to download and install a driver manually for this piece of shit back when I used Windows, because the driver Windows auto-installed didn't work. Meanwhile on Linux, I plug the fucker in and it literally JUST WORKSโข.)

Basically Stenzek put up his duckstation build on the AUR a while ago and he never updated the PKGBUILD and thus was getting reports that it wasn't working.
And duckstation-git one always worked without issues but for some reason other package maintainers are at fault that his build isn't working and threw temper tantrums instead of trying to think for a minute.
Basically schizo behaviour, but that's expected from a GNOME user.
I remember he also threw temper tantrums at Wayland having issues with the pcsx2 emulator and as it turned out, it was GNOME's fault as always and since then he has a vendetta against Wayland.

Could be paging, kernel quite aggressively buffers data read from disk into RAM, and can unload unused process memory into swap until it's used. Can happen for example if you're torrenting. You can check with "free -h" if your swap is in use when you encounter that.
You can either force cache clear with "sync && echo '3' | sudo tee -a /proc/sys/vm/drop_caches", or for a more permanent solution, look up how to configure swappiness.

I have used WSL to run opengl applications before and the performance is terrible. Even worse than using a wm with no hardware acceleration. It also has issues such as random freezes and crashes.

And usually my builds can be good for a decade with just upgrading the GPU. Been using windows since 3.1 and now after being forced to use Win11 at work, i think i'm done with it.

It's actually incredible how lucky we are that the company running the leading PC game distribution platform is also the one that decided Linux isn't a joke OS.
If GOG had gone all-in on Linux support, it wouldn't have made a big difference.
If EGS had done it, people would just hate Linux more because nobody likes EGS.
Linux support on Itch.io is probably about as good as anyone should expect, with its Linux launcher that can run Windows games using the system's Wine, but no one cares.

I literally never heard of this store until that post, but it has games for Linux:
https://fireflowergames.com/products?search[platform][]=92
Maybe it should be added to the thread opener... unless it turns out there are a bazillion little stores like this with Linux games and I've just never heard of them either. This one looks about the same as ZOOM Platform and Game Jolt in terms of size.

Hm. It's notable enough for PC Gaming Wiki to have a page for it.
https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Category:Stores
And so, painstakingly going through every page currently in that category, the ones which support Linux according to PCGW are:
>Discord
Doesn't count regardless of Linux support because the game store is gone.
>Fanatical
Doesn't count because it's just a key site, and we don't want to be considering every site that sells Steam keys. The search page does have a "DRM-free" filter but it cannot be applied in conjunction with the "Game" filter, because all of the DRM-free (and presumably direct-download) products are e-books and such.
>FireFlower Games
As proposed for inclusion. I think it counts. The games aren't just Steam keys, as far as I can tell.
>Game Jolt
Already listed in the thread opener.
>Gamesplanet
Doesn't count because it's effectively just a key site. Actually, I checked and there are a few direct-download games, but none for Linux.
>GOG
Already listed in the thread opener.
>Humble Store
Already listed in the thread opener. Not just a key site, despite what some people may assume, and I can see that there are direct-download Linux games even though the PCGW page doesn't actually mention Linux outside of a broken GamingOnLinux link used as a reference for something.
>Itch.io
Already listed in the thread opener.
>Snap Store
Doesn't count because I don't know of any games on here that aren't free. Also fuck Snap, lol.
>Steam
Already listed in the thread opener, of course.
>ZOOM Platform
Already listed in the thread opener.
So, by the standards we can retroactively apply to the stores already listed (i.e. being notable enough for PCGW and offering games for sale which are not just keys for other stores), I think including FireFlower Games would be appropriate.

Sadly, adding those links would exceed the character limit by 134 (thanks in part to these stores' search pages using such godawful query strings for OS filtering), so a couple of links in other sections would have to go. Alternatively, some of the explanatory text in other sections could be deleted.

I...used to be like this. But in my defense I was a brand new linux user back then. Stuff that seems dumb now seemed like rocket science when you first start out with it. I was trying to uninstall something (WINE I think), but I had originally installed it manually following a guide to get RPG Maker working and messed something up. So I wanted to start over again, and uninstalled everything one by one (working backwards), but somehow I also ended up uninstalling the whole desktop environment. (I could still use the terminal)
Honestly I still don't know how that happened. Of course, at the time I panicked and thought I messed up my whole linux installation, so I reinstalled everything from scratch and had to download all my software again and redo all my desktop/theme customizations. This process repeated several times until I got WINE working and I could play RPG Maker games.
I was following this guide which is mostly outdated but still works for the most part:
I'm not going to mess with it now since it works, but for whatever reason, if you try to uninstall WINE after installing it following this guide, you will remove basically everything except the terminal. I don't know how or why that happens, or why WINE is linked to my desktop's UI when I only wanted to remove WINE. If I had a spare PC I would investigate this. Or I guess a VM might work too but I don't feel like setting one up right now.

For Steam games, you can check ProtonDB (which has user-submitted compatibility reports, written primarily in the context of Proton, Steam's Wine-based compatibility tool, but reports unrelated to Proton are also allowed). For non-Steam games, there isn't a very active source of compatibility reports. There is WineHQ's AppDB, but every time I look up a game on there, the latest report is super old. There's also a site called "Are We Anti-Cheat Yet?" but, as the name implies, it focuses entirely on which online games' anti-cheat spyware doesn't kick Linux users.
For peripherals and accessories, I don't know. I haven't had much trouble hardware (including controllers, printers, WiFi adapters, headsets), but all of my shit is more than old enough for Linux drivers to have been written already. I've heard very new hardware might give you trouble, especially on a point-release distribution with an older version of the Linux kernel.

Like the other guy said, Microsoft bought Double Fine after the game was already in development. I heard the Linux port was pretty bad, and figured Microshart had told them to do the bare minimum required to keep their promises. But I never tried the game myself, so I don't know if it's actually a bad port. Some Linux gamers have an axe to grind when it comes to native games and will just assume Proton is the best option if it works at all. Maybe this actually is one of those ports that causes these people to go around saying native games all suck; maybe not.

Started playing with the other characters and I like this guy. He's from another indie game called Toree 3D.
The third character is some other bird guy with a sword. It says he's from a game called Holomento, but I looked that up and I don't see a bird character in any of the screenshots or videos... and it seems to be a forever-in-early-access game so I wonder if they've completely redesigned it to the point where the character making a cameo in Lunistice isn't even in his own game anymore. That would be pretty stupid.
Anyway I'm not buying some early access shite but Toree 3D and its sequels look pretty cool. Also cheap as shit, so the only reason I'm even waiting for a Steam sale to buy them is that I wait for Steam sales on principle.

Someday I will finish my replay of Psychonauts. (I was trying for 100% completion like some kind of idiot, which caused me to get sick of figments and drop the game for a while, multiple times. Maybe I'll give up on that.)
The native Linux port works pretty well, once you fix the gamepad controls. I've noticed a few bugs though, and several of them fall under the category of... graphical effects going the wrong way...? I don't know how else to describe it, but pic related. I assume there's supposed to be liquid dripping DOWN from these things, not UP. Elsewhere in this level, I think the liquid sprite coming out of a fountain is similarly upside-down.
Both of these bugs are probably related to this one (in which the graphical representation of a boss's attack goes the wrong direction):
https://bugzilla.icculus.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5646
It's a shame that it was apparently never fixed.

Maybe he made a throwaway account to report the bug and then forgot his password.
Here's that fountain shooting down into itself, by the way. This is pretty clearly another instance of the same bug seen in those shower heads, or whatever they are. Whether it's also the same bug that manifests as the reversed direction of the deadly triangle beam is anyone's guess.
Did I really think ZINK would fix it? Not really. But hey, the game runs pretty well with ZINK otherwise.

What game? What distro? Are you running the game's native build or the Windows build through Proton? If the latter, which version of Proton (and if applicable, what fork)?
We're missing some crucial details here.

He might pressed some key combination in the game or mangohud or whatever that triggers a testing mode for scaling or maybe even an easter egg (as it doesn't affect the mangohud ui itself, its probably not related to the compositor). Or as you say, he did it himself as a joke.

>starts doing this 20min in
1. Do you have a screensaver enabled?
2. Is your screensaver configured to start after 20 minutes?
3. Does your screensaver take your desktop and make it dance all over the place?
I don't know of a screensaver that does anything like this, but the way it's also bouncing around the edges of the screen does remind me of old Windows XP (etc.) screensavers. Ideally the screensaver would fuck off when you move the mouse, but maybe the game is grabbing your input devices so hard that the screensaver doesn't see that your mouse is moving.
Again this is 9000% speculation just based on the fact that this bouncing around the screen looks like a goofy screensaver thing. I don't actually know anything.

Its unlikely related to the screensaver or the desktop in any way as mangohud is injected into the game but mangohud isn't moving with the game, which means its either the game itself doing that, feral3d or mangohud

Hello lggots, I'm very close to getting on board Linux with either Arch or Cachy, but I'm wondering realistically what kinds of compatibility issues I'd be in for. I'm running an AMD CPU and an nvidia GPU. How many games would I be able to play out of the box? I mostly play indie games, emulators, and chinkslop like HSR. Some Steam too.
Can I pirate shit on linux just as easily as I can on windows?

Been playing Silksong for the past two weeks. The game is way bigger than it seems. Had fun with it.
Now I'm back to Fallout 4. I couldn't replicate the bug that tormented me in the past. Maybe Bethesda fixed it in the last patch? Very unlikely. Still, I'm starting a new vanilla survival playthrough to see if the bug happens while I play, I enabled papyrus script logging to help me.
I almost had a heart attack yesterday. I hadn't saved in 40 minutes (in vanilla survival mode you can only save by sleeping in a bed), and I was in an area I'd been through a million times and thought "no enemies spawn down here, I might as well exit sneak mode", but then I changed my mind and entered sneak mode again because I had a bad feeling. That thing would have killed me in one or two slaps at my current level, even in power armor.

Pretty much every game should work out of the box, and even on release date of a game. I just buy a game on steam and press play and it always works for me. The issue you could have is if you play a game with kernel level anti cheat, then it might not work on linux. Nvidia GPUs also have performance issues with dx12 games right now, so you have to run them in dx11 mode or vulkan if possible. Hopefully nvidia will fix that soon.

Piracy, in and of itself? Yeah. Download a GOG installer, and the Linux kernel doesn't know whether you paid for it and doesn't care.
Cracks, repacks, and other reasons that your totally-not-a-virus copy of the game will differ from a legitimate one? I don't really have any experience with that stuff, but so many people clearly have trouble with piracy on Linux that EITHER playing cracked games is harder than playing purchased games OR people who pirate games are more susceptible to skill issues.

I should really stop forgetting to rename my fucking videos.
Does VR (or stereoscopic 3D in general like on a 3DS which I never owned) help a lot with 3D platformers? The lack of depth perception is the source of so many of my fuck-ups in games like this. I don't actually want to pay for a VR headset and I don't think this one supports VR in any case, but it would be nice to know how far away shit is. There's a depth-of-field option, which I disabled, but I can't imagine it would help very much. I think it just slightly blurs far-away stuff.

I like the concept. The execution is questionable, but suitably chaotic.
Unfortunately I'm quite bad at aiming. There's no option to invert the Y axis, but frankly I don't know if it would help. Yes, I am one of those freaks who somehow got used to inverted Y axis for aiming. Indeed I even have a script which uses xinput to flip the vertical mouse axis as an emergency measure for games which don't have the option built-in. But upon flipping the mouse input myself, I found that the aiming still feels wrong because aiming moves the crosshair on the screen. I think I just can't get good at this kind of game, because my instinct for inverted Y axis in the context of aiming and camera control is fighting my instinct for non-inverted cursor movement. I should probably just stay non-inverted (especially since inverting all mouse input affects menu navigation too, so I'd need to constantly toggle it with a keyboard shortcut).
