As the series evolved in the early 2000s, some of the games started to take a more serious, darker, and deeper tone, starting with SA2. I am fine with that. It was a natural evolution of the series. I like that style. I want to see more games in that style. But some people didn't. Some people hated that style. That is also fine. They can have their own preferences.
Starting from Sonic Generations, SEGA overcorrected, and came up with a new style that exaggerates the cutesy and bright aspects of the series. I am ALSO fine with this style. I like it. I like cutesy stuff. I think the Modern/Classic split is good, because it allows to satisfy the demand for both styles.
It should also be noted that the "Modern" branch is allowed more variety. Modern can be both exaggeratedly cutesy and exaggeratedly serious, but Classic is a lot more rigid.

What I am concerned with is the in-between. Before Shadow 2005, there was no hard separation, and before Sonic Generations, such separation wasn't officially acknowledged. Nothing that has come out since 2011 properly fits the original style of the series like all of the 90s and most of the 2000s did. I want a new Sonic game in the style of the classics, Adventure, or Unleashed. That's not to say all those games are identical, there are differences between them, but I think they are more similar than they are different, while Frontiers and Superstars ignore the series' baseline identity to go in extremely different directions. The rigidness and extremely cutesy nature of modern Classic Sonic is not "how Sonic was before Shadow was introduced", it's more like an exaggerated parody of that. That's okay. I don't dislike any of these styles, but I also like the original style that's in the middle, and I'm afraid the Modern/Classic split, and particularly the rigidness of Classic, is preventing us from getting games in that style (which could easily fit Modern, but I think could also fit Classic if they weren't so rigid)

Personally I don't mind the styles and variety, or the characters being used in different contexts. There is no guarantee I'll enjoy everything, but I am okay with that. They can experiment all they want. I just don't want the original style to be erased. I think Sonic 1, 2, CD, 3&K, Adventure, the Hero Side Story of SA2, the Advance trilogy, Rush, Rush Adventure, Unleashed and Colors (humor aside) are all similar or similar-ish enough. Technically SA1 does have dynamic lighting effects, but you can't see them because they almost always get overridden with palette lighting. They were certainly meant to be in the game at some earlier point, though.

Sonic Adventure 1 was highly downgraded in terms of lighting on on the GC. SA2 lacked a bunch of shadowing effects which used the DC's modifier volumes. SA2 DC abused the Dreamcast's volumetric fog features for some interesting effects, like security alarms (Iron Gate, Flying Dog, Egg Quarters) and approximated "rain waves" (White Jungle). These effects are gone in SA2B, replaced with full-screen overlays (Flying Dog, Egg Quarters) or with a rotating vertex light (Iron Gate)

Sega changed SA1's palette based lighting to specular lighting in DX GC port and they barely even used it. SA2 CnkMultiDraw does support Vertex color + Lighting though used in Events

The porting team likely ran into problems implementing palette lighting, so they figured it would be easier to just update everything that didn't work immediately after they were brought over to SADX. Even SA2B doesn't use specular in the same way the DC version uses it.

That's what happens when the Dreamcast is the only system with hardware support for OIT lol

But that's false. Sonic Heroes was explicitly a result of Sega going third party. Sonic Team was preparing to make the original Sonic Adventure 3 instead if Dreamcast wasn't discontinued.
Unless you mean early production used Dreamcast dev kits as an unserious test? But it's believed that the lead platform was GameCube, which had the Adventure ports.
