It was fucking shit. The pacing and themes were totally fucked. They did a shit job setting up the parallels between Sonic and his friends and the hero of the ancients and their squad. Instead of going with the memory loss subplot and having Sonic regain his memories of his friends as he saw the Hero and their squad's stories play out, they had the characters themselves dump the exposition on us, then they dumped all of ancients on a single island. Sonic's friends are freed and then *immediately* go back to Cyberspace. This should have been played up as them putting their faith in Sonic to change the outcome of the final battle as *different* from the Hero. Like the fact that Sonic's friends took on the cyber corruption so that Sonic can fight the end properly should have been the deciding factor and the climax. Instead they added an entire fucking Island after that. What the actual fuck where they thinking?

Sonic Adventure and Sonic Adventure 2 were built specifically for the Sega Dreamcast's SH4 CPU.

Dreamcast goes all out on transparency and lighting, supports 8-bit destination alpha blending with 24-bit sourcing 32-bit z-buffer, Saturn and Dreamcast diffuse+specular lightning based on palette indices, Dreamcast used tile layered deferred rendering which supported order independent transparency. the Egg Carrier in Sky Chase appears to be rendered using the functions that ignore palette lighting, and thus it is using Ninja Lights set up in the SL file.

Technically SA1 does have dynamic lighting effects, but you can't see them because they almost always get overridden with palette lighting. They were certainly meant to be in the game at some earlier point, though.

Sonic Adventure 1 was highly downgraded in terms of lighting on on the GC. SA2 lacked a bunch of shadowing effects which used the DC's modifier volumes. SA2 DC abused the Dreamcast's volumetric fog features for some interesting effects, like security alarms (Iron Gate, Flying Dog, Egg Quarters) and approximated "rain waves" (White Jungle). These effects are gone in SA2B, replaced with full-screen overlays (Flying Dog, Egg Quarters) or with a rotating vertex light (Iron Gate)

Sega changed SA1's palette based lighting to specular lighting in DX GC port and they barely even used it. SA2 CnkMultiDraw does support Vertex color + Lighting though used in Events

The porting team likely ran into problems implementing palette lighting, so they figured it would be easier to just update everything that didn't work immediately after they were brought over to SADX. Even SA2B doesn't use specular in the same way the DC version uses it.

That's what happens when the Dreamcast is the only system with hardware support for OIT lol

His pacing since late pre-reboot has been slipping
I guess this isn't a matter of his writing so much as his views on the series, but he feels very stuck in his ways. The whole thing with Amy is that he feels that the dynamic between her and Sonic needs to be 'concluded'. I guess the best way of putting it is that he takes a comic writer's mentality to the franchise as a whole.
His views on characters like Silver are off.
His attempt at deconstructing Sonic and Eggman's feud ends up just running into the "Why doesn't Batman kill the Joker" problem: By the very nature of the series, Sonic and Eggman won't change in any meaningful way.

Shadow and Maria are separated by time (the past).
Sonic and Sally are separated by space (the distance between their planets).
And finally, Silver and Blaze are separated by space and time. (the dimensions and the temporal continum)

Thusly it completes the trio and demonstrates Silver as being like both Sonic and Shadow in similar and contrasting ways, for he is separated from his love by both space and time.

In 2025 writers get harassed for making Sonic use the wrong verbage. "Thin Ice" is not an adequate description for the amount of vitriol this fandom can produce when Sonic is mischaracterized.

You're under the assumption that characters need a bunch of context to be introduced to a new character. They don't. Shadow and Rouge were both new in SA2 and their actions are what define them to the audience, not backstory. Backstory is brought up when the story deems it relevant via flashback.

If a recap of JP Spinball was necessary, the audience could be brought up to speed in. a matter of minutes at most. With a little text blurb about it in character bios.

KH Games introduce characters from obscure games all the time. They rely on a glossary of brief summaries to catch new players up to date on past plotlines. This isn't unthinkable for a Sonic game to include, especially if it's just short Sonic Channel esque bios for each character so new players know what they're getting into.

There is a page on him in the glossary that catches the audience up to speed. As well as for other characters like Tails, Amy, and so on.

A character not appearing in a long time is not necessarily a barrier to entry for them appearing in a new story as long as it presents them well.

I don't mean to shit on your story but what I mean is basically that.
When Shadow shows up in 06 (A game where his backstory is irrelevant) They do not discuss the fact that he is a genetic experiment at all. Expositing that information is more confusing than leaving it alone.
The same is true every other time he appears in stories that don't involve his past.
I would leave something like that in the character manual.

"remember the new guy" is an infamously precarious trope for a reason. Even if you sidestep the whole alien thing. Sonic having an old friend who is having their first speaking appearance now is asking a lot on the audience.

I'm imagining the real-world reception to this game. I feel like the only characters in the franchise who could successfully pull this off are Tom and Longclaw because they're culturally present.
Take Shadow's arc in 06 as an example of the narrative issue I'm talking about. That arc is at its most satisfying if you are aware of Shadow's previous appearances. If 06 is your introduction to Shadow (Check any blind letsplay) it falls horrifically flat.
Conversely, it's a double edged sword. A lot of people who have played Shadow's prior games did not need reaffirmation that he can't be tempted by evil.
Sally has no prior speaking appearances in a Sonic game. She wouldn't even have that.

Frankly I don't understand the point of using Sally Acorn if we're treating Spinball as the "real one". She's a cameo appearance. The japanese text for her was written after the english text. This is not a case of japanese authorial intent being respected but a japanese translation of an american character randomly being given priority.
It's like treating Movie Shadow's first real appearance as the genesis marketing game where he chases Sonic on a bike to run him over.

Kingdom Hearts is heavily serialized so characters showing up again is a bit more understandable. In regards to the actually important characters, the only one I'd actually call "obscure" is Xion due to being from a DS spinoff, and even then, 358/2 had a movie on the HD collections. The HD collections in general help with the problem KH had where the spread of spinoffs made following the plot complicated.
If you mean Disney/FF-wise, the former are usually bosses or NPCs while the latter, the closest I can think of is TWEWY (and I'm pretty sure that was also a Nomura-joint).

Silver was included because the game included boss fights from mainline games, half being major bosses and half being rivals. Silver is considered a rival in the same vein as Metal and Shadow on top of allowing the rivals to be hedgehogs. The closest you have to an alternate option - seeing as Knuckles was more of a rival in the classic era, is Blaze, but Rush is only represented in the 3DS version (Rush Adventure was skipped entirely).
Additionally, Silver was a recurring character by that point, appearing in spinoffs like the Mario & Sonic games, Sonic & the Black Knight (multiplayer-only, but still), Sonic Riders Zero Gravity and the DS version of Colors.
Silver was far from obscure and had appeared fairly recently by the time of Generations.

The problem with anon's pitch isn't any of the little details but the big picture.
Sally Acorn's general idea of a "foil to Sonic" is fine. Anon didn't even suggest making them a pairing.
But putting all this heart and soul on a character dynamic that literally did not exist in the games is going to be asking a lot of fans. Especially in the late meta era where fans are on edge about anything slightly OOC.
At that point why use Sally? She sounds like an entirely new character based on her appearance from a game that has no dialogue.
If it's for the nostalgia points and closure, I don't think Sally fans would enjoy completely replacing all of the major details of her character to compromise with a backstory that has 0 audience.

When it comes to Knuckles, what he really needs is for his "Responsibility" itself to be redefined. Just guarding the Master Emerald, or even Angel Island, alone doesn't cut it because the scope of "Sonic's World" is simply too vast for that to serve as the proper counterpoint against Sonic's freedom.

If Sonic's free to go where he wants, when he wants, then Knuckles' "duty" should be just as vast in scope and yet even heavier a burden to match. I’m just diametrically opposed to Silver’s existence in this franchise (outside of maybe the comics). Whenever he and Shadow are around it’s clear that Sonic Team wants to turn the whole thing into a DBZ knockoff and make hedgehogs into knockoff Saiyans. If 06 had succeeded that’s exactly what we would be staring at right now. The difference is that Shadow has earned his place in the franchise and Silver has not. All he has is artificial “aura” forced onto all of us by his cultish fanbase.

We also never needed a THIRD protagonist-level character (let alone two), since that was also obviously in their vision.

Sonic Team was clearly trying to angle him in that direction but for whatever reason they never really pulled the trigger on closing out his ties to the ME in SA1, despite the obvious narrative hook of Chaos being the real reason Knuckles was forced to guard the emeral and with Chaos pacified, he was no longer bound by this duty and should be absolved of the sins of his forefathers.

I really don't understand why they didn't do that.
