Maria was never drawn/modeled in an anime style until very recently. Maria's model in SA2 wasn't very good. 2006 has horrible looking humans, but I'll gladly take Elise's look over Maria in SA2 or Shadow 2005. Good thing Sonic Channel and Shadow Generations finally fixed both

SA2 was also chasing realism, especially as an evolution to SA1. It just had better art direction.

I feel like Maria had the advantage of not being very present in SA2. She only has one powerful scene in the game so her job of endearing herself to an audience was easier since it was concentrated on that scene. In contrast than Elise was expected to go on a game-length journey with Sonic and most of that is her getting kidnapped.

Tails is just peak, it's that simple.

Maria in adventure 2 was mainly a character plot device to give shadow a reason to save earth, but she had like two scenes, she was mostly fleshed out in sonic x and shadow the hedgehog game.
Sonic x made her popular? Well sonic x was an extremely popular cartoon at the time, so maybe? It was the first version of her that was actually a character with depth, while the shadow game came some years after, using maria too while shadow was at his peak of popularity.
It helped too shes the most important character in shadow's background story.

I don't think Silver's time period should ever be solidly defined.
He is a time travel character, let it change according to alterations made in the past, and preferably let us do the alterations ourselves in gameplay.

The fandom headcanon about sage and metal sonic being at war with silver is cool, but as an alternate story, like an elseworld in DC comics.
Time in sonic seems linear, not making alternate realities, something like back from the future.

Tails is a young, humble, kind genius boy who likes machines. He used to get bullied because of his two tails, but seeing Sonic inspired him to see them as a strength. He is easily scared, however he is determined to be cool, so he tries his best even if he doesn't always succeed

I never played it either, and I don't know. I guess the character roster is small, but so was that of previous games. I've also heard a lot of people complaining that the online isn't very active. I watched the story on YouTube and it was lame and uninteresting. I don't care about racing games that much and I never played it, so I can't tell you anything about the gameplay. However, TSR is my favorite, because I love how some of the tracks look, especially Sky Road, and the soundtrack is great
