I also somewhat disagree with Mintharafag's argument at its core, but I believe it's because we're focusing on different things - the underlying points system or the narrative as it is presented. I value narrative much more than the 0s and 1s underneath. Gale's change can feel more organic in a sense, because the opportunities to push him away from pursuing the crown are more blink-and-you-miss-it. With Shadowheart, you'd have to be actively ignoring her not to earn these Nightsong points. One of these is essentially given for free in the Gauntlet.

The only time you have to actively steer Shart towards picking a better path for herself is in act 3 and only if you had her kill Nightsong and she's on the Dark Justiciar path. She can still pull of a last minute redemption but only if you activated specific flags for her. If you don't then you have to pass a pretty high persuasion check.

If you find yourself with a shart you don't want, simply return to the nearest Shar cloister and return it. They won't be able to exchange it for a better shart but you'll get shar credit you can cash in for some cannon fodder later.

The gauntlet one is free sure, but many of the others require the player to push against her beliefs in some way. The player isn't required to do this, it's just most do. You can complete conversations in a way that don't get any points. Most people save scum too, so if they fail to persuade Shadowheart on a check, they'll just reload.

You can just drop the spear on the last platform before talking to nightsong if you want to ensure you get selune shadowheart. Fuck that point system.

1. I like Karlach with all her flaws. Why would I like someone who is unrealistically perfect? That's the definition of a Mary Sue and no one likes those. Karlach is a good person who sometimes errs and stumbles and fails. Her greatest moral shortcoming is nothing in comparison to Gale pursuing the crown and arrogantly thinking he can save all of us. Gale is morally reckless and that's cause for disliking him. His entire character arc, if you've paid any attention, is actually letting go of some of that hubris. Then he can become someone more likable, but that's at the end of the game.

2. It just so happens that we have five well-written female companions and only two male ones. Blame the writers, not me. Again, disliking a character doesn't mean you can't discuss them, so feelings are irrelevant here.

3. You're misinterpreting a very simple statement - again, because of speedreading or willful ignorance. What I said was, and I quote, we choose "beauty over mechanical advantage." We choose A or B. You picking an ugly race is option C - the third option that is both ugly and mechanically disadvantaged. The idea that you're playing a dragonfreak out of a desire to roleplay is also dubious. Dragonfreaks are not even native to Toril. They have no history and no culture. Roleplaying a ruthless gith or drow is fairly natural - you can see firsthand how their history and culture shape their people, how they shape Lae'zel and Minthara. How do you roleplay a dragonfreak? You're very ugly (but no one seems to notice) and you love your clan? The entire race is a checkbox with the depth of a puddle.

I said you dictate to Shart what she does through the points system rather than just telling her in dialogue directly. The point I'm making is that the player just dictating what someone does through dialogue is not meaningfully different than just dictating what someone does through the points. You're missing the point if you're still saying "well Shart doesn't do what you SAY to her". I've always said the middleman you use to dictate what Shart does is not actually meaningfully changing the fact that you're still just making Shart do what you want through a simple choice presented to you. You seem to have looked up how it works so it makes less sense than ever for you to say "Shart doesn't do what you say". Her actions are completely dictated by a simple binary the player either clicked on or didn't, just like Wyll. But the smoke and mirrors of the points system instead of her just saying "What should I do senpai?" worked on you and you think it's meaningfully different. Apparently. Based on what you're said.

Another funny aspect of this is that Shart does actually have a "What should I do senpai?" where you actually do just dictate whether she kills Aylin or not, that does exist, but I haven't been criticizing the writing for that because that one happens when you're at a certain affinity with her prior to the scene, so her just asking the player what to do at her pivotal moment at least depends on you actually being friends. But it's just funny that Shart does in fact have the same thing as Wyll where you literally do just dictate through dialogue what they do. So this whole discussion is twice as funny.

At the end of the day, my main message is that Gale's style of actually presenting two ideas as somewhat both reasonable and the player actually ponders what they want and has to think about it and decide is much, much better than the other two, which are just saving them from bad choices.

A lot. Act 1 is packed with Camp Events that you'll never see otherwise. Later Acts are definitely lighter but Long Rests are still important to trigger or progress certain events (including romances). If you want to be 100% sure there's a "Camp Event Notifications" mod on Nexus.

They can be really useful for organizing your inventory. Named chests (or barrels, crates, trunks) that can the same in your Camp: pick them up, right click, "Send to Camp". Selling generic backpacks to Traders and shoving the tons of junk you sold to them into that prevents inventory clutter.

Gifting 400G to any trader with a level 1 character (this is important - respect if you have to!) raises their Attribute score to 100, meaning it ensures their best prices for the rest of the game. Due to the available items and their price tag this is most relevant in late Act 1 or more like in Act 2. Don't underestimate them, they can open up a lot of extra opportunities. Experiment and be creative! Since all but the first is STR dependent in one way or another, consider playing a such (20+) char once. Not necessary by any means but it's fun and supported by the game.

1. Karlach is slightly hypocritical - only insofar as you believe she has intimate knowledge that the souls in soul coins can be saved, even though she was just an unwilling soldier, and she would have no reason to know anything about that. The game never lingers on the lore-accurate ways to actually free the souls. Neither Shadowheart nor Gale chimes in. There is no passive Arcana check to remember a convenient method or spell to save the souls. Remove Curse does nothing. From the game's perspective, her reasoning that the souls are "already lost" is sound and doesn't make her an immoral or hypocritical person. Gale, on the other hand, is more than happy to discard trivial matters of morals - and potentially the lives of thousands - the second he sniffs that he could get his hands on the crown. That is beyond moral hypocrisy. It's moral recklessness, moral irresponsibility.

2. Wasting more time on the definition of a character. Karlach has agency and the capacity to make self-determined decisions - including sacrificing her own life for your sorry ass - so she is a character and a well-written one. Needing an elaborate quest or a lot of "content" in order to pass some character test is porcine drivel. Mol, the little tiefling brat who dreams big and is willing to deal with the devil, is more of a character than the non-character and she's just a minor NPC with fewer than ten relevant lines. "Content" does not dictate whether someone is a character or not - agency, and the capacity to move their story forward does.

2. The point about choosing "roleplaying over autistic min-maxing" is more about builds, not races, which is why I mention races in a separate point. I doubt picking a half-elf is going to budge your DPR that much. You get access to Booming Blade, big deal. If you choose to be a "cool" dragonfreak because you value "beauty" over mechanical advantage, you're ironically agreeing with my point, just with a different definition of "beauty."

Hmmm, I've been enjoying my current tactician enhanced+extra action enemies+randomized loot playthrough, it's more satisfying difficulty and the new items have been a blast, but I realize I haven't done a true solo playthrough yet. I've done a ton of other challenge playthroughs but I've been hesitant to do that one since the companions are a major part of the game, solo would feel like you're missing out. This is the prime example when "just reload" is legitimately the best answer. The reason why interacting with the Storage Room door aggros the Tieflings is because they technically own it. Just hover over the door and you can see it's red. If you talk to the girl who sits inside she tells you the story. In short, Larian implemented their idea poorly and you're suffering because of it. No need to overthink it even if it's absolutely not guaranteed to hurt you.

Why? Because it's only an issue is somebody notices it. Not to mention there's another entrance through the roof on the opposite side.
