Also worth noting that it only tracks concurrent players, not players per day. So only some of those are actual player losses while some of them are players like me who are sticking with the game but just logging in for dailies then dipping as opposed to sticking online to grind. If you're just popping in for 1-30 mins and are waiting for the meta to shift then you aren't likely to show up in the steam chart player counts.

You only need to get to M3 to gain more gems than you'd get for stopping at D1. If you can make it to M5 you should be able to get at least M3 without much difficulty. It's only a question of whether you want to play the amount of games required to do so.
For Diamond you need to get D2. Getting only D3 will leave you an irrecoverable 50 gems poorer. But that's not counting duel reward gems.

Hand traps don't work on Ryzeal, it's either draw Imperm and save it for your turn, or some sort of non responding interacting like Superpoly or Ultimate Slayer and hope they don't have the recursion. I've had some good luck with Ghost Reaper running 1 copy of Deadnamer in my extra deck as a schizo out, and it actually works. But I'm also running Red Ransom, blue eyes link 1 and Fiendsmith Sequence for extra schizo targets. But also, Extra-Foolish Burial send N'tss or Aggregator is actually super neat but not very practical. It's very hard to hand trap Ryzeal because they always draw the starter, the extender, and the Just In Case™ card which can be any number of random bullshit. Not to mention the stupid field spell. Yea I just save Imperm for my turn, or if I have 2 I Imperm Duodrive on their turn and Deadnamer on mine.

I blame flawless invincible monsters and negate walls. Ryzeal is just a stun deck. Maliss only wins because it beats the hand traps that everyone makes half their deck out of.
Combos are boring as hell. Limit everyone to 5 summons per turn, actually use the rules to make a game more playable.

I enjoy YGO as a game in no small part because it's such a different experience to EDH Magic games that take forever. However, I'm also a bit of a yugiboomer, so I'm disposed to think fondly of the IP.

However, it took a lot of MD to get modern YGO, and a lot more MD to get to the point of being comfortable enough with how things work to even think about paper.

Aside from getting new blood, this is yugiohs other main problem which is the onboarding experience. I'm sure we're all familiar with the same joke you see thousands of times in low effort videos talking about yugioh where someone who watched the anime like 20 years ago then trys to play modern yugioh but then complains about how their opponent activates 50 cards and summons a hundred times to cover the board in a billion negates but that is how people feel trying to get into modern yugioh.
If you're someone casual which is the vast majority of players, you have absolutely no reason to get into yugioh or stick to it. There is nothing like a current anime to get you interested, we don't have good looking cards to collect with ecelebs chimping out when they pull them like in pokemon which gets a lot of kids into pokemon now and if you're not familiar with tcgs then yugioh is probably the hardest one to get into.
This means the only people interested in yugioh are people who either liked the anime as a kid and those people willing to try are just getting fewer and fewer, or people interested in tcgs in general but that means every other tcg is competing for that persons attention.
This is why the one piece tcg has just been retarded popular and why yugioh fell out of the top 3 tcgs in japan.
We need casuals and in order to get more casuals we need shit like a branded anime or a DM reboot.

Yeah, it's a shame that the game is genuinely hard to get into. I enjoy that it's so different from the sea of Duel Masters-likes (with the exception of Digimon, which I really like even though I'm not particularly nostalgic for the IP).

It's just that paper is expensive, and MD shortcuts the tedious searching and shuffling. It also helps the learning curve with the glowing card effects to help a new player piece together the next step of their archetype's gameplan.

It's not at all like a fighting game. In a fighting game there is neutral, which would equate to a boardstate. There's no intricate boardstate back and forth in YGO, it's all entirely one sided.

Not knowing matchup knowledge is applicable to almost any PvP game, it's not some cool quirk of YGO specifically.

YGO card complexity is perfectly fine where it's retreated to now i.e. no more pend 2-cards-in-1 bullshit. Add the (1) (2) for effects like OCG has and it's good. Rulings and specific cards with bad descriptions being affected by those rulings make it very difficult for noobs to learn the game. Having every player tell you not to pick the game up because it's so mismanaged doesn't help either. Konami is a sinking ship. I can only cope that their future releases continue to fail so that YGO gets acquired and rebooted in 10 years.

Depends on your deck. Some can just keep comboing. Some have GY effects Nib will trigger. Some can set up a negate before the 5th summon. Some can set up a board in under 5 summons. Some can chain SP to protect their board. Some search out traps before getting Nibbed. Some have enough hand traps to try again next turn. Some just lose.
