Setouchi's released the concept art for the Mantis Girl and while my favorite iteration is easily the third one, the original incarnation of his mantis girl actually lacks the mantis like lower-body like the girl in the OP does. Humorously, judging by how they have almost identical poses even down to how some of the arts are positions if you just take that picture and then flip it horizontally, the original body plan of his Mantis Girl seems to have eventually ended up being reused for Honey the Bee.

While skills have drastically powercrept the normal attack strategies, it's also very easy to give multiple characters each multiple turns, and not only can everybody reliably get multiple turns, but with the absurd boosts from proofs and all the free AP they can equip every ability they need to turn into omnipotent blobs, and with Chains, each of those turns will consist of even MORE turns, each of which can be their own sequence of multi-hitting skills without requiring outside set-up like EX-Tentacle, letting you do things like have functionally twelve or eighteen turns on a SINGLE individual due to how the multi-activations, chains, and such will exacerbate in their effectiveness with additional turns. And the intended off-set for such absurd strategies, the ridiculous HP/MP/SP costs that are intended to rack up from all those abilities, have become completely nullified, because you can either reduce costs to 1% or negate them outright.
Meaning you can do all of this, for free.
Before the enemy even gets ONE turn.

It can happen quite easily once a system gets complex enough. At some point the game is just more variation than a single human can comprehend and as the game dev you keep many versions of the game in your head which makes it even worse. You will not know every possible interaction of your new content with stuff from three years ago, of which you only remember how much of a pain the animation system was. And then by sheer numbers the playerbase will have iinvested 10x, 20x, 100x more time trying to break the system than the dev.

I haven't played MGQ but from what you guys are describing it seems there's either a fundamental issue in the combat design, or game was extended way, way past its natural lifespan.

They didn't just nerf defensing dancing and singing buffs, trtr nerfed the defense buff itself. You most likely heard that from me, and that's sort of what happened but not entirely.
One of the hairpin items was supposed to give Crisis Magic Evasion 75%, but instead accidentally gave Crisis Auto-Daystar. You could not obtain that item until either very late in the game or the LOC itself iirc. But needless to say it was patched.
The OG Meta was Evasion and Deflectors. Deflectors originally stacked indefinitely, and were later nerfed to cap at two. Evasion's formula now has diminishing returns as well solely because Evasion used to be so good at helping to mitigate damage, especially when combined with Deflectors. The combination of these two was one of the core strategies for challenging some of the Superbosses, evading all of their attacks with deflectors soaking up what was auto-hit, with everyone needing to be careful not to forget how many deflectors they had left so they didn't get caught without one and OHKO'd.

Trtr's initial response to Evasion was to break it's fucking kneecaps in Part 2 by not only changing the formula but giving every enemy a natural accuracy buff. I only learned much later after coming back to this general during the extended delay that he had thankfully reverted this horrendous choice, and later versions removed the accuracy buff but kept the modified formula, which has left it perfectly balanced. Even now in Part 3, it's still very strong, but not overwhelmingly so. Unfortunately, I'm certain this kind of over-correction is undoubtedly the reason he nerfed defensive buffs so hard.

And yes OG Harpies were fucking PEAK. Sky Dance in Part 1 was absolutely glorious. Reina did not even have priority in the original Part 1, by the way. What a power-up she received! I am truly thankful for My Wife's blessing.
Insects were also Meta originally, and so were Popes. Also originally Holy Martyr revived the user and could reactivate. I can recall at least two anons who's LOC teams were nothing but Insect Popes.

Pyhar and Reina (plus one of the insects, iirc it was Vanessa) were how I managed to beat the Armored Berserker back in the day.
It's a pretty far cry from how she is now, but at least she had her time in the sun.

It's been so long that while I remember some general stuff, I honestly can't remember the specifics of who was 'the best' overall. More or less I just recall what was generally very good and commonly used on teams. Harpies, Insects, Apoptosis, etc. I have my old save file of Part 1, but my archive ended up being one of the initial versions of Part 2 that was mid-translation, and the computer I have Part 1 on has battery problems. I've been meaning to fix it though, I'd like to go back to it. My favorite version of the LOC has always been the original Part 1 version, and I think the enjoyment I had from spending an hour or more to finally whittle down and kill the superbosses was part of why I really enjoyed the longer fights in Part 3. The battles against Chaos honestly felt almost exactly like those original Superboss fights even, a really long contest of attrition where any mistake would equal a loss. Granted I did kick Luka out of my party (and fought her with only Reina) so I lacked the FOC's comically huge stat buff for it, but I'm kind of glad for that, it did make it a lot more fun for me. It was very nostalgic in a way, and reminded me of what I loved about the battles in the first place.
Reina going from start to end over the course of ten years was great too though.
I do believe both Shesta and Lippy were very very strong however, Shesta especially, as Time Magic as always was extremely powerful. This was also prior to Apoptosis being turned into part of the doll race chain however, so Shesta did not have any access to doll race stuff. Not that it mattered much for her, anyway.
Also Mitsuko was still really damn powerful even back then.

To be honest with you, Part 2 feels almost the same to me as Part 1, or at least it originally did. Besides the initial nerfs that were re-balanced in time, really there's not that much of a difference, it's just the same thing but more jobs, more races, and a tighter balance on things so they would work as intended (like no infinite deflectors). Insects were a meta choice, but it was mostly because of their race itself, due to being able to get their defenses to a point where they'd functionally stop taking damage combined with the reduction from guarding and Insects having their own innate deflector skill, meaning they could always have access to deflectors and never needed a specific job or ability to use them, combined with the multi-activation buff and the defense scaling not being so bad here due to the lower power ceiling (IIRC the original level cap was 30).
Part 2 just added more of the same, but that was all it ever needed to do, and all it ever needed to be. Just the same good thing, but more of it. Hell, when I had originally played Part 2 for the first time, the LOC didn't even have gems, or custom drops, or a smithy or anything like that.
But I can tell there's definitely a point where something changed. 2.23 seems like it was the LOC was updated to have gems and the smith. I don't think the original Part 2 had chaos elements. Galactic was just percentage based damage and I think Time Magic used to just be Untyped, and iirc Galactic was renamed Gravity, and then some Untyped attacks were changed to a new Galactic element. But 2.23 didn't have any of the really, really crazy stuff at all either. No Sorceries, no Collab or Collab-Jobs like Shield Captain or Psychic, and above all 2.23 did not have Gravity Pleasure (i.e; basically the Part 2 equivalent of the Auto-Daystar "I win" button).
So whatever snowball happened to cause the serial escalation in Part 3, it probably came around the time of the Collab.

If he didn't nerf the stat buffs and you had all 3 of them with both Shield Captain buffs you'd have characters only taking about (75%+75%+50%+50%+50%=)7% damage and this is before counting True Hero's Song would probably also had a damage reduction if he went this route.
On the other hand Stats Down gave a 1.33 bonus against physical, and 1.17 against autohit while All Stats down gave another bonus to just physical and magic. These bonuses meant something in Part 1/2 because you had to use one of the few characters or skills with it but in Part 3 where Eden or Micaela or whoever is doing it casually with their normal multihit combo it's probably not a good idea to keep a +33% multiplier

However the thing that changed the game the most is the Conditional damage update of Part 2. It's not even accounted for until the Demo that even the Collab have HP equal to base 2.0 despite being after the conditional damage update. I don't think anyone really hated it at the time, but it slowly became realized that if one wanted to speedrun the game outside a funny Very Easy difficulty run Stats Down and a Bow or Spear would be the way to go.

This level of power feels extremely unintentional.

Anon pretty much everybody has been complaining about getting one-hit-killed by everything in the third route to the point even trtr's been forced to acknowledge it twice; I REALLY do not think you can try to justify the defense nerfs when it just railroaded everyone into wanting to kill everything in one hit because almost nobody could figure out how to survive. The game was balanced with them in mind, and it's very noticeable when replaying the early game in Part 3.

Also keep in mind, his original fix to Evasion was to change how the formula calculated the buffs being stacked. trtr did the exact same thing here as well, and also changed how buff stacking was calculated for Part 3 as well, completely nipping the exact thing you are talking about in the bud: you cannot stack minor stat buffs with Hero's Song, and you cannot stack THS with HS. The highest one overwrites the others. Meaning this problem does not even exist. There would be no 7% DR because THS, HS, and Defense/Willpower Up no longer stack with each other, and as a result the DR they each have wouldn't stack either. At most they stack with Shield Captain, but given the absurd stat and damaging scaling of Part 3, having a single one of these stacking with Shield Captain is fine.

trtr instead did the same thing he did when he gave every enemy the +200% accuracy buff to kneecap evasion by just kneecapping defensive buffs so not only did they no longer stack but they were absolutely worthless in the first place now. a mere +25% defense is atrocious and does nothing to help.

Absolutely not.
It's just time consuming, which eventually leads to it becoming stagnant and boring, because there's never any difficulty with surviving, it's just not dying of old age before the enemy loses all decillion of their health since now that you can hit the stat cap thanks to proofs there's just a point where the health pool eventually inflates to absurd proportions.
Every single anon who was posting about the Carnage LoC after beating Part 3 stopped within only a couple of weeks, even the former anon who was posting all the Part 2 Gravity Pleasure clears. I can't be certain, but I honestly think most of them just stopped playing it because the entire game became "solved". If you choose to head down the path of being optimal, then everybody because the same omnipotent blob, everybody plays the exact same way par things like unique chains or ailment rate bonuses that are able to uniquely stack and such, but it doesn't make much of a distinction in the end anymore anyway.
It's just become boring and there's simply nothing to do. So they left.
This is why I went back to Part 2 to play the LoC, honestly. With the restrictions in place by comparison, it managed to become fun again.

I think it's rather Trtr balanced the game on normal difficulty as the higher difficulties are just stat multipliers, maybe at best he himself plays on Very Hard probably mainly using the main cast, but because of all the original changes (trait buffs, dual stat skills not being shit, weapon buffs) it affected Part 1/2 being too easy since it was way too many buffs even if he nerfed some of the most dominant strategies like Endure and V.Clara. Part 3 however was balanced with too many factors much that the casuals would skip over. Like how many people know exactly how Element Composition work when first playing Part 3? Most people will probably skip the tutorial npc that goes over it

In any case don't the shield captain buffs for physical/magical/auto-hit affect the damage type itself, and not the actual damage calculation like the Part 2 defensive buffs did? In fact Shield Captain allows you to negate normal Physical/Magical damage outright, and it only has one Auto-Hit DR buff. World Assemble does not actually reduce auto-hit damage at all despite what it claims, and not only does it not double your defense either but a lot of enemies start to ignore defense anyway! So it would have been just the 50% DR from the Part 2 Buff and the 50% AH DR from shield captain.
And let me be clear, I had zero issue managing to survive and I think that Shield Captain is fine, but the average player may not even know Shield Captain exists at first, much less why their original defensive strategies suddenly no longer work at all and it railroads people into only using that one job. Not to mention how important Doping and Super Doping from Doctor became. I was able to make a bunch of Harpies facetank hits sure, but most people I don't think enjoy going through the set-ups that Part 3 requires you to do in order to achieve that now.

I think it's finally setting in for me now that I'm never going to enjoy this quite the same again.
I'll never have as much fun as our first adventure, those many quests and journeys that all eventually lapped into the Final Run. We already fought and accomplished all those things. I loved Part 3, and we had a great time, but it's impossible to go back in blind again. Maybe that's why I've struggled to commit to another playthrough. We'll most likely end up doing the same thing again, defeating the bosses with Reina and Co, dancing and flapping and all, but the discovery is gone. Until Part Three I felt like I could do it forever, and I did many different playthroughs, but now it's almost like the loop has closed. I can't turn back time. There's no more mystery because I know how it ends. And trying to go back feels like I'm trying to change that end. The Harpies have their happy ending, and it's wrong to take it away from them. So we just go all over the map and revisit old towns and stuff like that.
And it's nice and comfy. Back in the Singularity world, it's the peace I always wanted for this place.
And yet...........................it's almost like, like something is missing.
