Wrath leans way more heavily into the power fantasy. It also has far more things to consider in character creation so it can be overwhelming if you don't have experience in the system which you can get form playing Kingmaker.

Another consideration is that it will be harder to go from WotR -> KM, due to the QoL things introduced in WotR. So, if you're confident you'll want to play both, I'd start with KM just for that reason.

>>538337739
Play on Normal, even customize the difficulty easier if you need to. You can adjust it at any time even in combat (same with TB vs RTwP)
Don't be overwhelmed with the options, just pick what you think seems cool. Decide what role you want to play and stick to a lane: ranged archer, blaster wizard, martial, whatever.

There's a few things that aren't necessarily clear to new players, just randomly a few:
- There's a -4 penalty for shooting (or casting ranged touch attack) into combat, this requires Precise Shot to get rid of, which itself requires Point Blank Shot. So, decide early if you want to be shooting into combat or not. A debuffing wizard won't need to, for instance. Ranged attack absolutely wants this of course, and wizards using ranged touch attack spells.
- There's AC, Touch AC, and Flat-Footed. Touch AC is for touch attacks of course, and is much lower than AC itself. Flat-Footed is for surprise rounds or if someone's held or whatever.
- Getting up from prone procs an Attack of Opportunity. Casting a spell in melee range *might* but there's a "defensive casting" roll.

Honestly there's tons of little tips and tricks and gotchas, but you can play on Normal and unless you're being a major dum-dum you don't need to think about it really, or you'll pick it up as you go.

tldr: Play on Normal, pick and do what you think is cool, but try to have characters pick a lane and stay in it for the most part.

Eldar used to like Tau, because Tau were a secret uplift project of the Eldar, intended as a client race to use against the mon-keigh.
But then the Tau turned out to dislike the Eldar intensely, regarding them as a race of interfering nuisances who talked in riddles and acted arrogantly.

You're kind of just fucked. The pathfinder system has so much bullshit in it and as a new player you have no idea what items, permanent buffs, and enemies exist.

If I had to give one piece of advice though it's to stack as many buffs with unique adjectives as possible. You'll see shit like enhancement, morale, insight, etc. and as long as the adjective is unique it stacks. If two buffs have the same adjective then only the highest counts.

there's some janky shit here and there but overall I have fond memories of playing it for the most part

The only tip I have off the top of my head is that everyone will basically need to have Blind Fight at some point, maybe by around level 6 or so.
That's not a "metastrategy" thing, more like you will just be completely fucked without it when the time comes due to the way they implemented a certain mechanic.

I didn't read the other responses, but CC (Crowd Control) is your friend. The high damage spells may look appealing, but they're not that good. Spells that look kind of boring or simple, like Grease and Hold Person, are notoriously strong and you should be using them, even at high levels. Also, in general, casters are much stronger than martials (fighters, rogues, etc.). You still want martials (think auto-attackers), because they do most of the damage. But your casters will control the battlefield immensely, and amplify your martials through buffs, summons, CC, and debuffs on the enemy that act as very effective force multipliers. In general, buffs are VERY good too. Having +4 Strength may not seem very attractive or flashy, but often equates to a +10% chance to hit and +2 damage for your dudes, which is quite good.

I haven't tried this for Cassia's romance specifically, but this is generally how you use toybox and it should work.

I was reading about T'au lore and didn't know that they only live for 40 years. If you did have a T'au wife, it'd only be for a decade at most. And she probably wouldn't even live to see her children graduate high school. The even weirder thing is that there's a sizable portion of the Human Allies in the T'au Empire that are older than every living T'au(especially when the humans aren't dying young because of poor living conditions in the Imperium).

Holly shitte dudes, multimillion dollar CRPG idea.
WotR/Kingmaker style crpg with a home base but you send out multiple separate parties of characters + mercs to go out in the open world rather than just taking 5 out of your 25 possible companions with you, or using shitty "cards" and "armies" to solve problems. Obviously story-dependant acts like WotR Act 4 and story/companion-relevant locations like Ivory Sanctum stay the same.

I was going for the "It Itches" achievement, but the rash was actually cured like any other injury when I returned to the bridge lol. I think that's a bug because other playthroughs I've had to go to the chapel and pray to remove it. But when I'm actually trying to keep it, it is cured by accident/a bug. Classic owlcat.

I also don't have the "kill 3 people with rend vision" achievement despite doing that several times this playthrough and my previous playthrough, with both the player character and Cassia, so that one is also bugged.

I also don't have the "be self sufficient in the blood investigation" despite doing every stage myself and never skipping any of the stages by delegating it to Jocasta. I've done the dlc three times now without delegating anything and not getting the achievement, which leads me to believe you can't let any one do literally anything. So you can't let Pasqal convince the tech priest to give you access to the computer, you can't let the enforcer conduct the autopsy, you can't let Jocasta kill the cultist, etc. I think you have to do literally everything, even dialogue, yourself.

One other achievement that has been elusive is to visit every optional location. I've played the game 4 times and I've gone to all the secret locations I know of like Incendia's stasis pod and the drukhari stash on the ice turret planet and the halo device noble and a ton of others. I really am at a loss for what I'm missing, I suppose I'll have to look that up online.

I really don't want to get the two chaos achievements. There's one for beating the game as conviction chaos and one for surrendering Euphrates to chaos. A whole playthrough of being a retard just for some achievements.

Biting 7 people in one turn with the mastiff will also take some figuring out. I've only bit like 4 people before running out of ap so there must be a trick to it.

I'm so close, I'm excited to 100% this game.

This stupid myth again
People confuse the fictional Agincourt from Shakespeare's Henry V with the irl Agincourt.
The longbowmen forced the knights to dismount and struggle through mud, under constant physical impact from arrow strikes. This caused them to tire and fall easily to pikemen. Few knights were killed directly by an arrow penetrating their armor.

Okay, let's play that game. Fall damage in Pathfinder caps out at 20d6. If you have more than 60 hit points (average for an 8th level fighter with 14 CON), you will survive a fall at terminal velocity so long as the damage roll is average.
If your GM lets you take the max HP roll at every level, then at 10th level that fighter with 14 CON has 120 HP, meaning that he cannot die from fall damage, unless the GM rules that the ground rolled 20 sixes in a row. Even then, he'd only be unconscious at 0 hit points
So what literal situation is the combat system representing here? Is the fighter actually dodging the ground? Was it only a glancing fall?

That's more-or-less XCOM. I enjoy XCOM a lot but it's not a roleplaying game. You can't roleplay in a satisfying way if you're constantly churning through characters. There needs to be a credible threat of death but a decent average life expectancy for party members. This goes doubly so for CRPGs because without a player roleplaying a party member, you have to write the character ahead of time. How many extra characters are you going to write to serve as replacements in your incredibly lethal system?

It's not about realism, it's about fun. Permadeath makes combat fun by raising the stakes, but it's unsatisfying in general due to the way these games are written - unless you don't care at all about the story companions and are happy to play with interchangeable mercenaries/hirelings/etc.

I don't think there's a happy medium between the traditional CRPG approach, in which death is just another temporary status effect and anything less than a total party wipe is just an inconvenience, and the XCOM approach where you're expected to lose significant numbers of characters throughout the game and permadeath is a core part of the design.

There was one optimal path of skill allocation and dialogue choice that allowed you to reach the necessary skills required to pass the meaningful checks.
You spam new runs until you figure it out and then you're able to progress.

Even if you go full combat-tard the only thing you're really changing is what weapon you're using. You still need to know when to upgrade secondary skills and at what time in order to branch off of the default storylines into the higher tier ones.

It's not all on Owlcat's shoulders, it feels more like all RPG devs feel the need to fill the party with quirky or snowflake characters as if they think people can't connect to them if they were Joe the human fighter or Dave the alcoholic dwarf. It's been going on since Baldur's Gate 2, at least. And then there are devs who I think aim for the maximum fan engagement and go overboard with the cast of snowflakes (looking at Baldur's Gate 3 here) or intentionally want to go against the grain... and go overboard with the cast of snowflakes (KOTOR 2, Pillars of Eternity, Mask of the Betrayer, etc.)

I do see there's annoying quirkiness in BG2's cast, but it isn't just quirkiness that I'm getting at, I think, since I still find Minsc tolerable.

It isn't really that they're snowflakes either. Its that they seem to be written obnoxiously. I just got to encountering Jubilost for instance and he's incredibly offputting. I know these games lately let you attack some of these party members outright at least, and I could remove Jubilost from the party after recruiting him, but I feel as though the game would've been better without the character in the first place as it doesn't fit my character's roleplay to just attack everything written obnoxiously.

>KOTOR 2...Mask of the Betrayer
I don't remember feeling that way about KotOR 2 and Mask though its been some time since I played them, I might have to go through them again to see if its my tastes that changed.

In Pillars however I didn't feel this way but I did feel bored by the characters outside of Aloth, Eder and Grieving Mother, instead of completely put off or irritated like I do with later crpgs.

I don't have a problem with Minsc either, since he's the comedic relief character, but comparing the recruitable people in BG1 and BG2, the cast turning quirkier is easy to spot. How many people remember people like Ajantis, Kivan, Branwen or Yeslick (ISO standard paladin, angry ranger, cleric you had to know how to recruit in the first place, the most milquetoast dwarf priest in Faerun), for example? In 2, it seems that everyone has a personality quirk that's blown out of proportions. The druid is a werewolf, Jan is a gnome who keeps banging on about turnips and his family, Aerie is the rarest sort of elf from across the world and is all about her wings, Haer'dalis is an urban fantasy stereotype from another plane, etc. Even the characters I like have this laser-like fixation on something and they won't stop: Keldorn and his duty, Nalia and her CG ways of trying to make things better, Mazzy and her dead fiancee (all right I can give her that because that sort of shit would suck).

When it comes to KOTOR 2, I mean that every party member was so completely aimed at turning the normal, KOTOR 1 style party (your Han, Chewie, R2, etc.) on its head. There's Kreia - basically a mouthpiece for Avellon to voice what he think sucks in SW - for a first, the galaxy's worst Sith ever (Visas), the Han is now an edgy ex-assassin, a droid crime boss, etc.

I did this one on that planet with the infinitely respawning Necrons. Basically what I did was have Biomancer Idira give an extra turn with metabolic overcharge to Solomorne, since her psy rating was in the 20's he got 20 something AP, in order to avoid the self damage I had Solomorne end his turn by using Entrench, this stores your current AP until you use Run N' Gun. Ulfar was fucked by nu-40k Space Wolves fluff. Unfortunately they're about the only chapter you could have him belong to and also be part of a Rogue Trader's retinue for any length of time. So Owlcat's hands were tied there and I don't blame them for leaning fully into the characterisation that was essentially dictated to them. What's particularly stupid is that Dark Heresy includes rules for a Grey Knight, so they could have ditched the Space Marine for RT and included another heretical/xenos character.

Jae is a nothingburger and a disappointment considering all the possibilities the setting offers. Keeping Idira around is realistically unconscionable after the first warp event. Marazhai is highly optional and if we were in a pre-internet age I bet most players would still kill him at the first opportunity without even realising he can be recruited.

A local who previously held a very high position of power finds himself trapped in a very similar situation to your own and is willing to form a temporary alliance. 'Precarious co-operation' between Eldar and humanity is an old trope of 40k, so Yrliet make sense. Eldar are supposed to have mysterious and enigmatic aims which may occasionally align with the Imperium's, particularly against Chaos.

But a Dark Eldar is a step too far, unless GW have nuked the fluff again since I wasn't looking. It was a dumb choice. They should have had the Dark Heresy Kroot, or a Tau, or a Lacrymole or some other underused non-faction Xenos race. They should haveg given RT all the Xenos companions and saved the SoB and the Space Marine for Dark Heresy.

The game kind of presents a bad picture of what a Rogue Trader's crew is like by throwing a bunch of loyalists at you in act 1 so a criminal that helps you make trade deals with the different factions feels like the outlier. Also her situation when you recruit her should be made more clear to the player so you know it's just dick measuring within a gang on Footfall and everyone is a criminal including the guards that come to arrest her at the end.

Shoulda had something like Octavia let you ask about the situation from a third party's perspective and flatly spell out that everyone is in the same criminal org and after Jae lost support from her last patron (Mercy) one of her rivals (Falco) got the go ahead from Vlad to steal all her shit.

But returning to the vidya context, Solasta will not have companions to get bear sex on with, so that is another thing that will not attract casuals.
I have seriously not seen any indication that BG3 has led to a resurgence of people appreciating DnD ruleset for vidya and wanting more of that specifically, instead of nearly everything else BG3 actually offers

The idea of a Radical inquisitor is just a fleshing out of the old Buckminster Fuller quote: "Those who play with the Devil's toys will be brought by degrees to wield his sword." There's endless ways to make a corruption story compelling, if the writers are up to the task. The presence of Black Science Lady and yet-another-fucking-Eldar unfortunately indicates that they are, however, not.

Alternatively you could write a compelling path in which a radical does in fact resist the temptations of Chaos effectively and achieves some great deed his puritan counterparts could not, albeit making some enormous personal sacrifice in the process perhaps.

And ship combat is actually good, not just discount HoMM 5 against 95% inferno enemeis with your progress resseting.

I think both of them had the same issue.
The only way to play optimally is to know in advance what skill checks you need and what order to do quests so that you can get the xp to pass those skill checks.

Playing blind always boiled down to the same thing.
>oh wow a new quest
>oh I don't have X in Y skill
>I guess I can't do that quest
>oh I guess that quest is unavailable now because I progressed too far
>oh I over leveled Z skill, I guess I'll remember that for next time

I think the point is to encourage replayability, but as a consequence it makes the first run really unsatisfying and subsequent runs like going through the paces for the optimal outcome.

- You can up your reputation if you need to by donating to temples but it's really fucky and you should look up how much to donate if you need to do that for some reason
- If you agree to help companions but then don't, after some time they'll warn you, and after more time they'll rightfully fuck off never to be seen again
- level 1 you WILL get your face eaten off by wolves, do a lot of ranged and kiting early on. Stray crits in heavy armor can even fuck you up badly in early levels... But this is part of the entire zero-to-FUCKING GODHOOD arc.
- Sleep is really powerful
- if THAC0 or AC confuses you just put on different armor/weapons to see how the number changes, it should be pretty obvious what's better.
- Most stats won't matter outside your class stat, but dumping/minmaxing is soulless and the game isn't that hard for the most part, so it's better to play with RP in mind
- There's like 20 companions so again with RP/story in mind, imo best way to play is not savescum unless you hit TPK or something basically impossible (but even then it can feel really kino to for instance be the only survivor and have to build up another party but that's just me)
- Temples can resurrect for a fee, it's not too bad but it does scale and can be expensive if it keeps happening

Final one is important: trap detection is on a 6s cycle, so even if you're really good at spotting them, move slowly and deliberately if you think there could be traps around

>Is there a specific alignment that opens up more lore/reactivity than others?
There is essentially none of this. There is a minor thing that I don't want to spoiler, but it's really nothing, and like "X" if you're good, "Y" if you're evil, but they're about equal in power.

>Is it obvious which companions are more fleshed out than others?
There's very little fleshing out at all. Most companions have one objective they want to do, and besides/after that they have very little to say. If you want fleshing out and more bants, and you can handle a bit of fanfic-tier writing, use the NPC Project mod.

There are a couple other mods that I'd even recommend for a new player, but vanilla is perfectly fine too. But basically, expect almost no companion/reactivity type stuff. 25 year old game.
There's a bit of reactivity with certain decisions you make but not very much. You'll want to headcanon/RP a lot of it.

Yes restart. In long crpgs it's perfectly normal to get through the starter zone and restart now that you know the mechanics.

Just be aware that the game's difficulty kind of falls off a cliff in act 2 as builds start to come online and everyone just goes infinite. Act 3 is NOT a huge difficulty spike. Ask anyone here and they'll tell you that by act 3 they're clearing every encounter in 1 round unless they deliberately nerf themselves with significantly weaker builds.

The most balanced gameplay is actually playing unfair in act 1.

Soldier is a pretty good foundation. Officer is a good one too if you like giving extra turns to the other guys. Make sure to level characteristics occasionally during leveling using the Characteristic Training talent- Strength and Toughness for a soldier
Burning damage is tough to deal with early but becomes a minor nuisance later.
The real problem with that fight is getting stunned by that big hammer. I think Toughness is the characteristic that affects saves against that? Abelard is well suited there.
For that particular fight, try to pull back around the corner
If you do restart, remember that some classes actually need to take Field Medic or Basic Skill: Medicae when levelling before they can even use medkits, regardless of their actual Medicae stat. Took me a while to work this out.

> stopped being contrarian
Never was like that.
> that bg3 is a good crpg?
BG3 is not a good CRPG by any means.
It’s both a bad CRPG and a bad game overall.
The gameplay is poor with its clunky combat and simplistic build-crafting. The story is terrible, full of plot holes and filler elements, and it’s incredibly linear. The companions are awful, written by California zoomers. There’s no atmosphere because everyone talks and acts like typical Californians.
BG3 belongs in the same category as porn games made in RPG Maker; it has far more in common with them than with proper CRPGs.
Despite their budget constraints, Rogue Trader and Wrath of the Righteous are objectively superior to BG3 in absolutely EVERYTHING, except for graphics and the amount of voice acting.
I simply cannot imagine someone who has played anything other than BG3 calling it a worthy game. It’s absurd and trolling with stupidity.

Can't stand her accent, her VA was terrible.
But its not just the VA, its also how her dialogue is written (which probably feeds into the VA). She's an obnoxious character to have around and the devs make it so she gives you lots of rewards right out of the box just for recruiting her like they knew she'd be disliked.

I dislike Idira for the same reasons, just annoyingly written, annoyingly voiced, and forced to take her in the intro. Giving her to Heinrix or kicking her out or whatever else doesn't really fix that she shouldn't have been written in there in the first place.

The problem with WHFB is that none of the shit you can do on a squad level matters when the actual real shit s done by armies.

You'd have to either play a very low-stakes scenario while controlling literal whos OR play a moderate stakes scenario while controlling actual named characters from the lore, but the problem is that many of those named characters would lead big hosts and not some rag-tag squad.
