I agree it's not just Ian, there's the problem with her voice direction too. Cindy's Amy has been getting lower and lower with more dry annoyed energy, which make the few peppy, bubbly lines that should fit Amy better, sound completely off. To me, she sounds more like an older woman trying to recapture her youth than the cute teenage girl she was meant to be. And again, the Karen bob cut only adds to this in a way that wasn't present when Lisa Ortiz was still voicing Amy.

The "Core Four" is the same group marketable in the Classic and Modern (̶a̶n̶d̶ ̶B̶o̶o̶m̶ ̶r̶i̶p̶)̶ parts of the franchise. Shadow is the closest thing to the fifth member, but he's a Modern character with no official Classic design, so his use case is hampered. The fifth member will invariably be a rotating slot. In retrospect, this could have been resolved by making Classic an AU instead of Modern's past, but eh.

TMOSTH and Evan's portrayal of Amy in the recent idw arc still has the fiery attitude without going overboard. It's possible to give her these character traits without making it revolve around Sonic. She can still be allowed to be an immature teenage girl while learning a lesson on boundaries.

The fifth character can only be someone like Blaze who is the polar opposite of Sonic primarily, and also a direct contrast to Amy where Amy is the cute bubbly one and this other girl is the opposite.

But Blaze is wrapped up in her own nonsense, and she isn't a Classic character, so it's unlikely.

If the other girl is just designed to be a friend of Amy, or centered around Tails or Knuckles instead of Sonic, it will never work. Cream and Rouge are automatically invalid for "Girl #2" by their own core concepts and roles alone.

Amy wasn't even part of the base roster for creams debut game, and therefore story, you fag. Amy is often described as "cute" in official material, so yes she is.

That aside, Cream was created for Heroes. She was introduced in Advance 2 so that fans can get to know her earlier so that Heroes isn't just a bunch of newbies. The fact that the relationship between Amy and Cream was never properly developed is a severe writing issue, but the core concept with Cream is firmly that she is Amy's sidekick / a Team Rose member.

She's with Blaze in Rush because of that role as well, because it's inherently just "Tails, but girl". So when Rush was developed and they had Blaze as the Nega-Sonic with her own Emeralds and Eggman, and Sonic's story has Tails, they used Cream to fill the slot of "Tails" for Blaze. Because Cream is already that for Amy anyway.

Amy is Girl-Sonic, so Cream is Girl-Tails. Amy's personality reflects Sonic's impulsive and thrill-seeking and adventurous spirit, Cream's personality reflects Tails' kindness and gentleness while also being more cautious and observant than [Sonic/Amy] by comparison.

Cream being Amy's "mediator" is a dynamic that Sonic & Tails also share. Sonic is the first to leap into danger, Tails is the one that'll ask questions pointing out certain things Sonic would otherwise not think about.

The difference is that Sonic is cool and aloof, Amy is excessively passionate. Tails is much warmer in temperament than Sonic, Cream is much cooler in temperament than Amy. And obviously, Cream is much more overtly polite with strict manners than Tails is by comparison, though Tails is definitely more generally polite than Sonic.

But above all else... Small child, younger sibling, yellow and/or orange in color(s) whose defining unique ability, especially gameplay-wise, is just Flying. Sure, these same boxes are checked with Charmy, to a degree, but
A) Charmy is not the kid sidekick to a Sonic analogue
B) Charmy's personality is polar-opposite to Cream, and by extension Tails

Not really. Especially since they re-used Amy mistaking ____ for Sonic with Silver's introduction anyway, and then had Amy as one of Silver's amigos, so Amy is directly tied to all three hedgehogs in some significant way.

Nothing. Big is not Knuckles, at all. Big is actually a lot like Sonic, but replace the high-energy thrill and speed with a more slow-paced lifestyle, but the core foundation of freedom and nature are still there.

Team Rose was originally going to have Rouge as the Power-type, but Rouge is NEGA Knuckles, NOT Girl Knuckles. The closest to Girl Knuckles would be Tikal, Shade or Blaze. But Tikal on Team Rose is just a Cream clone, personality wise (pacifist, orange, friends with Chao).

In a way, it loops around to Sticks being a direct contrast to Cream in how both contrast two opposing versions of Amy. Cream is polite to contrast Amy's more brash attitude, but Sticks being a crazy conspiracy theorist in the wild contrasts Boom Amy being the antithesis of Amy.

I don't think so, Sticks is likely to just be the same. I'm just highlighted that the original basis for her seemed to be contrasting Boom Amy. Sonic Channel still emphasized that she's Amy's friend, so a canon Sticks would still be friends with Amy but their dynamic would be much different. They'd probably vibe with each other much better. I mean, I see a lot of potential in Amy being a very excitable girl who follows her "intuition" and fortune telling having very good synergy with a crazy savage conspiracy theorist that lives in the wild. Shadow the Hedgehog is Dark Sonic, he will never be an additional member of Sonic's team EVER, because Shadow IS Sonic, but "Dark", so he is firmly the SONIC level protagonist of the "Dark Side" in his stories.

Trying to make Shadow the fifth member means you want to kill Sonic & Knuckles, and hyperfocus only on Shadow as your true protagonist, or some variation of that.

I've spoken with you before, I know you're using it because you have a specific normative assessment of characterization that you can be aggressive about. There's a bio or two that describe knuckles as the "mountain" to sonic's "wind", and while most people would probably interpret that as an artistic description of the characters, or at the very least a simplified comparative, you treat it as gospel even though it barely stands up to scrutiny.

Relative to Sonic? Sure, knuckles is "like" a mountain, if we restrict ourselves to character abstractions. But by himself knuckles is no mountain. He yearns for much more than shrine duty.

It's not about what Knuckles wants. It never is. He's like Spider-Man. "With Great Responsibility" means this is what you HAVE to do, no matter how much you dislike it. No matter how much you'd rather be doing something else.

Of course Knuckles yearns for more, of course he envies Sonic's free lifestyle. But, he knows what he must do. That is what makes him the Mountain, that is the "immovable" core of the character.

But they also botched it a bit by making the Emerald Altar out there in the open, which ends up forcing Knuckles to have to "LITERALLY" stay in one place to keep watch over it, rather than have free reign over the entire island because the Emerald is hidden deep down in a volcano where no one can easily find it. The Master Emerald should be kept in Hidden Palace, and Knuckles' Guardianship should extend to the Chaos Emeralds as well, so his task should be to "treasure hunt" for the Chaos Emeralds all over the world, which naturally would put him in Sonic's adventures without issue while keeping his core anti-Sonic focus intact, and this would actually create a proper rivalry between them.

Knuckles being the mountain shouldn't have to mean he's literally stuck in one place physically, it's a METAPHOR! For his MINDSET, his LIFESTYLE. The duty thrust upon him, in spite of everything he actually yearns for deep down! Unlike Sonic, Knuckles has a home and a job he must always return to, an obligation, but he's still a person with wants, needs, desires, dreams, etc.

The Adventure era was developing things but then Heroes happened so all of that progression was stopped in its tracks. The only one who actually carried that momentum into Heroes was Amy, but that was easy when the game itself demanded she be a leader of her own team separate from Sonic, while also putting her in Sonic's relative role story-wise and gameplay-wise, thus necessitating that she carry her adventure arc forward.

But other than that, Tails and Knuckles were hurt the most by Heroes and the games as a whole just neglecting them both severely in different ways. Sonic Adventure's plot is so heavily centered around a core theme that "Chaos" does not need to be "Mastered", that it basically nullifies the whole reason why Knuckles had to be shackled with the duty in the first place by making the Master Emerald itself obsolete. And, by effectively freeing Tikal & Chaos from the Master Emerald... It's 100% possible that they could have just had Tikal and Chaos return to where they were in ancient times by making THEM the new Guardians of the Master Emerald, restoring the Chao Garden that was basically there and stuff, allowing Knuckles to finally be able to move on.

And from there, his "Mountain" theme of Responsibility can be recontextualized in a way new that maintains the contrast between him and Sonic but carries this change in the status quo further, probably in some way that relates back to Treasure Hunting and his ancestral bloodline. He's the last of the Knuckles Clan, he has a duty to his people, and so he'd naturally want to carry on their legacy as much as possible. Dig up as much as he can about the ancient world and his own ties to it, so that none of it is ever forgotten. And, potentially find some way to perpetuate the bloodline and start a new "clan" somehow.

Sure, but it's the kinda thing where on the surface, it'd just look like Tails is still JUST Sonic's sidekick, even if he's technically grown and become more independent under the surface. Overall, aside from introducing the Dummy Rings, Heroes Tails is fine. I just think that in order to actually carry his Adventure development further, he needs to have his own "Team" where HE is the leader, completely separate from Sonic. At least somewhere in some side game or side story, while still allowing him to be on Team Sonic in Sonic's main adventures.

Like, Tails is Robin. He needs to be Batman's Sidekick, but he should also be the Titans Leader. Batman is BATMAN, that's never gonna change, but Robin should still be able to have his own space where he's allowed to grow into his own and become Nightwing. So, really, all Tails needs is his own games or stories away from Sonic on the side. Heroes itself wouldn't have been the game where that happens regardless, I suppose. It was only Amy who was able to achieve that because Sonic-Tails-Knuckles are the nostalgic trio and Amy is always treated like extra anyway, so this is just a rare occasion where that worked in her favor.

The only real significant way to showcase Tails' character growth is to have him actually be the Leader of his own team, away from Sonic entirely. Metroid: Other M and 06 both suffer from the exact same problem. They introduce characters and bonds and fail to establish emotional stakes within the narrative so nobody gives a shit if they die. "Remember me?" is "Trial of Friendship" level of writing. Adams's sacrifice in Other M is as equally retarded as Blaze's in 06. At least with Adam you have some foreknowledge that he's going to die because its a Fusion prequel; but they introduce his brother who's bond with Samus is external to the narrative soley so Samus can empathize with Adam to add emotional weight and learn the lesson properly this time.
