The maps in MLA are good because they have gameplay elements to them. They're also pretty important to the story too since the characters constantly reference their locations in other parts of the novel. The map sections in Slay the Princess were boring af compared to MLA. There aren't many VNs where you can interact with the world in such a way either, especially not outside of RPG maker games like Avesta or whatever else we had before MLA came around.

Other times it can completely ruin entire sentences.
