I'm guessing it's paid shills saying the story and writing aren't still atrocious? This is so fucking bad. Half the characters are complete faggots or extremely over-earnest Disney types. There are STILL sections where you're sitting around listening to yapping. The side quests are especially egregious, like the "heist" quest in the first town. Where taking the quest requires you to pick up two MORE side quests, both of which have no substance beyond sitting there listening to them exposition dump and yap about their zany backstory (note, neither character are of any consequence after the quest ends).

And the voice acting- it's hard to describe, but for some reason you can just FEEL that every one of them is desperately trying to make a name for themselves, and the end result is forced, overacted dialogue.

It's doubly frustrating because again, the bones of the game are good. If I could just run around randomly clearing POI's, I would say the game is a solid 8/10. But POUs don't drop shit for loot, it's all gated behind these god awful quests.

If you didn't slog through BL3 campaign 4+ times lower your tone when speaking to me.

I think there is. The first vault you come across had level 20 enemies in it and I went in at 17 or 18 so things were a little scary. And that crystal boy before the boss was a pain in the ass. Everywhere scales as you level but I think some areas do have a quiet minumum level so they didnt have to populate dungeons with.. calfhorns I guess.

I have a bias against the Timekeeper for not being a rival Vault Hunter. BL1 had Atlas, BL2 had Jack, Tales had Vallory, BL3 had the Twins. You were in a race against them to get to the Vault first. The same competition between different factions that made things like the Indiana Jones movies so much fun. But the Timekeeper doesn't do that. He ALREADY has the Vault, so there is no race against the clock. No hurry, just take your time to overthrow a dictator. It's fine, but I liked the other formula better.

You getting the right skills? I was rolling green for a bit before going blue. Having distraction ghosts is nice. Even by 15ish or so green was getting pretty fierce with the chaining AoE bleed. Things were melting pretty quick by then when I'd just rush into the thick of it. I was just struggling with bosses so I went blue for a bit. Maybe I just had an OP shield at the time or something.

Well I'm running the blue tree right now. And I'm at work for another hour so I cant look at it right now. Max out the skill that give you overshield for survivability, then try to stack status effects/dots and "enemies hurt when close to you" stuff. I really didn't put too much thought into it by the time I switched. But if you are really struggling just go blue for a while. Respeccing isnt too painfully expensive.

This is unfortunate, as I really liked playing a Law/Order Zero build when that was still viable to do. Same for Krieg melee builds. Rafa's blades are fun to run around and bully trash mobs with but he struggles hard against any badass or god forbid a boss. I hope he gets that tree buffed, and given some kind of way to reliably hit all the flying enemies in the game.

Find a boss you like, do a few runs until a legendary or two drop. You'll definitely find something cool.

You just CAN NOT look for something super specific. Even trying to get maliwan combos. I tried for like 3 hours farming bosses and didnt even get close. Just have to let it go and embrace the chaos. And try stuff you wouldn't even think is neat. I have a legendary maliwan sniper, damage sucks but it pierces and basically fires 5 bullets that zigzag around. Damage is like half of any other sniper of it's level but the piercing and zigzagging make it the absolute highest damage output weapon I have. Nothing comes even close. Utterly shreds groups and bosses alike. If it wasn't my second legendary I would have never used it the damage looked so piss poor. Glad I decided to try it on the boss again.

Seconding for 'try it before you junk it'. Damage/DPS numbers are only good for guns that shoot one bullet or a normal boring exploding grenade. If it has any kind of weird bullet effects it could easily triple the numbers you're looking at and the description on legendaries usually don't actually tell you what it ACTUALLY does. I'm swapping to red tree with Rafa. Until Gearbox does some kind of proper bug testing this shit is unreasonable for his green tree. Acid drop only seemingly works half the time, the the kill skill duration skill doesn't appear to work at all, and most of the "X% more corrosive damage on Y effect" also appears to only work occasionally. Plus the moment any flying enemy comes around he's a wet noodle. I don't remember melee being so shitcanned before in the series.

Why are people so anal about this game? I play the game on mostly low settings, and I still think it looks great. I think every change they've made to the gameplay loop, from broad stuff like the open world, to the small moment-to-moment stuff like the grapple hook and new ordnance stuff has been a good decision. The story may not be BL2-tier, but that's a really high bar to reach in the first place and it's noticeably better than BL3's.
Seriously, I don't know what kind of bug crawled up everyone's ass with this game, it's genuinely fun and a marked improvement from BL3 in practically every aspect. I'm probably going to put hundreds of hours into this.

You already told the story you wanted to tell and now you have to just pull more story out of the air.

I'm not saying it's impossible or anything, maybe you set some hooks up in the first to expand on in sequels and had a little foresight in that regard, but taking something good and doubling is easy to ask but difficult to provide. tldr

For now, I think the best aspects of BL4 story is how standalone it is. See, one of my issues with BL3 story is that it set itself up with grand expectations due to its planet hopping premise, featuring a threat that threatens the whole galaxy. However by the end of BL3, it feels like we've barely progressed in the overaching narrative, with more questions than answers about the universe.

Due to being set on Kairos and featuring mostly new characters in its opening hours, BL4 explicity disconnects itself from the rest of the universe and thus, it's able to tell its own story without being beholden to having to continue the overarching narrative. In fact, I feel the weakest parts of the plot come toward the end where they did more teasing of "the war"

I'm mostly impressed at how good the dialogue and story is in general. There are some missions where it feels like they really, really needed to hit a gag/agenda quota (the Outbounders ship drive mission and the thresher breeding mission) but they are very limited.
Outside of that I found myself pretty endeared towards my character and the others because it's played completely seriously and the game allows their writing to be funny, without saying "LOL DO YOU GET IT DO YOU GET IT DO YOU GET IT". The endings to the missions can still get absurd, but it's done in a way that you can appreciate and find the charm in.

Also they listened to feedback and cutscenes are short and impactful, the longest one i've seen so far was around 2 minutes, and even then, because your character takes an active talking role it doesn't feel anywhere near as bad as BL3 where the first time you meet the overarching antagonist you have to watch Lilith fight them and they dialogue at eachother for 5 minutes while your character gets treated as if they literally don't exist by the game.

I think the worst part is that the starting biome is by far the best. Lush green fields, tropical forests, beautiful clear blue rivers and oceans, Geyser springs, Dark caves, murky and dingy seaside/swamp shitholes, and more exotic alien remains, lots of variety in the industrial complex buildings vs the concrete civvie settlements or ramshackle ripper abodes. It's not a super "unique" design for a world, but it looks great and there's a lot of variety depending where you go.

Then you get to the snow biome that is 90% snow 10% caves with no real variation outside of big buildings forming communities, and the desert biome with is 95% desert 5% caves, and all the industrial complexes look nearly identical to what they were in the first biome. Tainted Grail also had this issue with the last biome being 90% pure snow and it fucking sucked.

It's not horrific, but my computer started to freak out when I had 4 hour session, left the game on the esc menu for 2 hours to eat lunch and go for a walk, then went back to playing for another 4 hours yesterday.
All my other programs became uninteractable. Not crashed, but couldn't click anywhere on them except the toolbar to bring them to the front. The different Alt Fires have been really fun too. There are some guns I only carry around because of a good Alt and never actually shoot it normally.
I can't remember if I ever really used them in 3 outside of gyrojets.
