Compile Heart is still doing multiple releases every year. Nep as a series is kind of dead though but it's been drifting for years now. The announcement of a new mainline game was years ago and it's most likely not happening. CH probably has a problem with acquiring and keeping talent. The current devs there and their absolutely abysmal understanding of unity should show you the kind of people currently working there. It's kind of amazing that the pc ports are actually regressing despite using one of the most pc friendly engines as well.

in Matilda ability system piggybacks the animator in a weird way. making animator update the player model in Update() leads to very weird mirage shift behavior
Compa games are traditionally riddled with ability/control systems that rightfully run in fixedupdate loops but interface directly with character animations/camera or whatever runs in the update loop directly with no interpolation, fucking stuff up and making it really jittery in the process

The game's story chapters roughly correlate with release versions. Also, don't take Trap Breaker nor Trap Nullifcation skills in the Death End Skill Tree until you have completed DE 079 - 087. It is possible to get death ends with those skills, but it might be a bit difficult.

Not to mention that you can't carry a lot items at the moment since in 2nd dungeon, and as you will progress you will be able to carry more things.
For zero sanity DE the best strategy for me was abusing ether codes and guts items.
But also, I did play on normal difficulty (at least my first playthrought was on normal), because I didn't want to lose stuff when dying.

But yes, actually dying. You fuck it up, Sayaka dies, the Alice follows musing about how wonderful that scene was and then the game reloads. You keep a permanent Skill Point to upgrade her tree afterwards.
The game essentially encourages you to go for killing her as many different ways as possible because in the hard mode her level is resetted every time you leave the dungeon and if you die you lose the equipment and money on hand too (not the ones you stored in your closet).
While there is a system to keep weapon upgrades, it also costs money to restore them into your weapon. So I made a point to farm those Death Ends from all enemies in the first dungeon and the complicated conditions straight away before moving on and exploring the 2nd dungeon.
Because the 2nd Dungeon went Mary Skelter and there is a boss roaming and hunting us in it.

Update: I did it. Exploration there was even worse than I expected cause the Sanity mechanic bit me hard and there are only two pages of slots for items.
I entered straight away with some Ether Codes and prioritized over Health Items. Unfortunately this came to bite me by the 14th floor cause Lilith spawned there to hunt me and I had to use a teleport item that also threw me amidst some monsters.
Regardless I was successful in killing the boss

I usually agree with you there but in Hard Mode you only keep the skill tree and points from Death Ends. I CAN record weapon upgrades but it costs money to re-apply them. So if I want to farm money properly I need to farm death properly. I think it will stop being an issue once I have a consistent mean for that but until then it's death and rebirth.
I'm eyeing up a Sanity recovery skill to circumvent the low sanity issues since it's basically the equivalent of needing to eat constantly.

Now Alice just has one of the best chemistries likely because they share the same background before the positions reversed upon discovery she is a Blood Maiden. They lived there jailed and she kept relying on him to protect her or for his blood to calm her, so becoming a Blood Maiden didn't just make her finally be able to do something but also gave her the capacity to protect Jack which she was unable to.
I really liked the early subplot in the 2nd Dungeon how Alice joined Red straight away leaving Jack behind because she didn't want him to be in danger, but she was also super conflicted because she also wanted him to be there for her in spite of it.
