VNs have become so popular and mainstream that they have fallen into their own trap (like otaku media generally) where you either have to be super edgy/scaji tier to stand out from the crowd or appeal to the lowest common denominator with your target demographic already saturated with content so they have to add random shit to keep people buying it. This also applies to visual novels. The former is what you can call "moe" VNs (which aren't actually moe), the latter is why we get NTR stuff in moege, rape scenes, censored eroge versions, and shit like that added to things for the sake of sales rather than actual enjoyment.

In fact, one could argue that most of the real enthusiasts have long since left this community behind due to the constant influx of low-effort posts and memes related to video games, anime, and other hobbies that don't involve spending hours reading lengthy prose followed by extended sexual encounters between characters. Even within this current state of affairs, however, there may be hope; if enough dedicated readers choose to remain active despite everything, perhaps they will eventually create something meaningful out of sheer stubbornness alone - much like how even the most useless object can serve a purpose if only someone cares enough to use it properly.
