Sushi ben is actually fun! Best performing and the most stylish looking Unreal Engine VR game. The 3D manga panels really add to atmosphere and look quite cool. Japanese voice actors did a really good job. It's mostly dialog based adventure game and I just only started getting mini games, but it's cute, funny and enjoyable.

If you mainly want it as an external display though, I'd probably avoid the Quest 2 or even 3S. Clarity is a lot better on the 3, and that helps a lot for reading text. Even with that, I never really found it to be something I liked enough to use over an actual monitor though.
There are some "AR" glasses with displays that might be good if that's all you really want it for, but I don't really know much about those.

played the demo, I think the second time is going to be my last because it doesn't seem to save progress and I had to quit because back pain. The game had me fish, sit through a boring conversation listening to a bad mediocre actress, then fish again. Also it appears not all dialogue is voiced or mine broke, which was jarring. Is this some kind of visual novel? I think you're expected to sit down when you play this. The music isn't good. And it sounds like you'll be hearing the town theme most of the game. I don't think I can pick this one up.

Great looking game though, a lot of work goes into those 3d comic panels. Hopefully the game is better than the demo, but demos usually show your best cards.

It works pretty well overall, it's already a better experience than trying to play in tabletop sim's VR mode despite the downsides.

I think it'd be better to keep the graveyard/exile on the table rather than a zone like the deck, since they are public information, just have some extra room/markings on the mats to designate them. Alternatively you could make the UI searchable by opponents too but the order also sometimes matters (maybe not for pauper but in general), so full interactable cards would be better.

A mode you can toggle that drops the card normal to the table and at a 45/90deg angle whenever you drop them near the table would be nice too. so the cards aren't as floaty/disorganized (not physics, just a simple calculation of nearest pose when dropped). And while you're holding a card, displaying a bigger copy of the card facing you somewhere (like TTS' zoom thing) would make things easier to read. Eventually, an overhead spectator camera on a big screen somewhere else in the map would be nice too.

Due to cards being expensive performance wise, there is a limit of 30 cards/player that can be spawned, wich is why graveyard, exile etc are lists where you spawn cards, and not the cards thrmself. But Graveyard and exile being synced and visible to other players I should probably implement.
Raycasting so cards land on the table as a toggle will probably be implemented in the future.
Holding a card displaying it at 50% bigger can be implemented. As it would not interfere with future auto translation toggles when you hold the card, just make them bigger.
Overhead camera like in the mahjobg map is an idea I had, but not sure if you will be able to see much unless screen is big.

When you spawn a card from the pool, the card looks up if there is art downloaded already, if so it uses that art, else it queues the art for download. Is the laymans explanation, in reality you have race conditions, VRCUrls that can't be instantiated, memory management, VRC limitations. Card draw is true random, unless you have 16 turbo autists syncing up their draws in the map, so when you draw a card with art not in the map, it's close to instant unless it's the first 7 you draw. And VRC downloads images for everyone so you don't need to sync shit.

There are currently around 10500 cards, every year another 400 cards get's added, the art also requires the artist name to be shown with the art.

A deck has an average of 20 unique cards, thats 3Mb of images/deck on average. With 16 players in an instance, each with a deck of all unique cards, thats 48Mb of images for 60 card decks, max saved images is 512 for 75Mb of image data saved to Ram.
That is less then most booth clothing people put on in Unity nowdays, and if you have 16Gb or more of ram, a non issue. And if you managed to get VR running on your Motorola 6800, just go to another map dude... Size of the Objectpool for each player is a much harder issue to fine tune and lower hanging fruit then art atlasing.

I think making a server that takes in an MTGO decklist, grabs all the card images, atlasses them, and hosts the card metadata + TGA-encoded atlas over http would work. Then you'd paste in the deck url on the vrchat map instead of just the decklist, and it'd load everything one-shot.
