Very different from mainstay series formula. Only has 11 chapters, but huge maps with lots of events that basically work as multiple chapters rolled into one. Lots of features and mechanics that either never returned or were streamlined in future titles. Recommended only once you get more experience with the series.

A simple yet challenging game. The RNG works differently here than most of the other games so lube up for surprises. Try to avoid Sacae on your first playthrough.
>Sacred Stones
The easiest of the GBA trilogy but still fun. You can trivialize most of it with some early, simple and very accessible grinding. The first game with split promotion paths. Skills are back but limited to only certain classes and remarkably simplified. Overall a pretty good time.
>Path of Radiance
Hands down one of the best games in the series IMO. Easy at times, challenging at others. Keeps you on your toes with a lot of unusual situations and map designs. Most classes are fun to use. Laguz are interesting, even if they can be annoying to use. Skills return in full form. The base is a great concept, and BEXP gives you a lot of flexibility in building your army, alongside being a valuable reward for playing well. Fantastic game.
>New Mystery
First game with a proper avatar. You'll either love how they're just another guy in the army rather than some secret dragon Jesus, or hate how easily they become chummy with everyone else and earn their eternal respect and whatnot, and how they steal a bit of Marth's protagonism at the start and end. One of the biggest casts in the series with plenty of options to build your army with. Easy on-the-fly reclassing. Can be tough as nails later on. Has a bad ending that locks you out of the later half of the game, so be sure to look up the gaiden chapter requirements so you don't miss any of the needed items to avoid it. Also has a lot of extra challenge maps available from the main menu.

the game is quite easy so the entry barrier isn't high. It mostly depends in your tolerance for lack of QoL stuff (you have to manually calculate damage and attack speed, for instance)

A lot of the difficulty comes from the game being rather rough and unpolished, but the bulk of the difficulty happens in hard. Don't feel afraid if you're interested since you should be playing on Normal anyways.
>Path of Radiance
If you start with newer games it's gonna feel relatively bland, because while it's definetly the most polished standard game of the 00s, many of it's features were expanded upon in later games particularly in the QoL.

Should I really? I've heard a lot about Hard usually being the sweet spot for a proper FE experience. It's probably a bad comparison because of QoL and generally weak gameplay, but 3H would've been a snorefest on Normal. And in Awakening Hard was just about right too.

RD was really cool. I liked the perspective hopping and the fighting your own army. The feeling of being the little guy, story and gameplay wise, and trying to hold off Ike's OP army was fun
FE4 is so jank I think it circles around to being fun. Once did like 20 hits in a row with some brave bow pursuit adapt skill build and it was peak
3H gameplay is kinda bland but I think its a neat spin on FE to basically raise an army when you have 80% of them from the start. I know everyone has their thoughts on the writing but I really enjoyed the story and characters.

A lot of people restart a whole chapter if they lose a character (or in Shadow Dragon, restart at the last checkpoint). It might seem like "cheating", but keep in mind that sometimes completing a chapter with everyone alive can be just as tricky if not more than completing a chapter while sacrificing someone. Personally I always keep everyone alive on my first playthrough of an FE game and do ironman on later playthroughs.
That said, Shadow Dragon is the most ironman-friendly game in the series. It throws a shitton of units at you, has free reclassing in case you lose some important classes, gives you bonus characters if you lose too many units, and if you lose even more units it starts giving you generic no-name units, a mechanic unique to Shadow Dragon and New Mystery.
Shadow Dragon's sequel, New Mystery, acts as if you recruited every characters in Shadow Dragon and lost none of them, but this is actually impossible - You always lose a character in the prologue, some characters only join if you have lost enough units, and some characters are mutually exclusive.
