His concerns aren't exactly unwarranted either: Mervamon isn't considerably stronger than Minervamon, she's basically just a mode change, but historically the games treat cases like this as if they're just evolutions; Minervamon will likely be weaker than she'd normally be as a consequence.
The game also revolves around time, and Mervamon is explicitly an aged Minervamon, so Mervamon is likely going to be presented pretty heavy-handedly to really hammer in the changes that come with the game's theme.
There's also the fact that Bamco are cockblocking us again with story-relevant mons, so the poor autist is going to have to sit around watching Mervamon acting like she's a cool grown-up hotshot version of his waifu while he's unable to have a Minervamon of his own due to the grade evolution condition.

One of my favorites is Digitamamon, and I've always appreciated that originally he was basically the punchline to Nanimon's "is actually just a tamagotchi" joke.
Taken on its own I don't really rock with Nanimon (i mean fucking look at it), but the original bit is good enough that I still like it as a pre-evo for Digitamamon better than Ogremon, which seems to be the default these days.

Now if only Digitamamon could get a new preferred pre-evo as well. I think Bandai's been getting too caught up on the preevo having to be green to match Digitamamon's legs, when I think either the shadow inside or the eggshell itself should be the core point for a potential pre-evo. Though frankly, more than anything, I wish it could just come out of an egg fully formed as Digitamamon (which obviously won't work in most contexts since it's a Perfect-level).
All that said, I'm fine with Tuskmon out of the options available in TS. Will probably still keep it as Betamon until I reach Agent Level 5, though.
