I ain't gonna APA Style a funking 4chan post. Go google it if you want.

Some context first:

Context note 1: After Perry diplomatically convinced the Tokugawa shogunate to open themselves up for trade or he'd non-diplomatically open their assholes with his canons, like every other western sailing power around, such as Britain, went and did the same, establishing what is known as the "Unequal Treaties", a series of concessions to western powers built on the base of "we have fucking artillery and you don't so suck it, squinty". This had a pretty hefty effect on the already shaky authority of the Shogunate, which by itself had been limping along for years for many reasons, including the fact that rules set in place over 250 years prior were kinda starting to chafe, like the Fudai/Tozama distinction imposed on the Daimyo, or how Samurai stipends hadn't gotten an update to account for inflation since the time of fucking Hideyoshi.

Context note 2: "Samurai" in 1800 were literally all LARPers. The country hadn't fought a real war in centuries, so whole generations of their "warrior class" had never seen an actual battle, and compensated for it by overacting LOYALTY, training with weapons (including guns) they had little odds of ever using for real, and theatrical displays of YAMATO DAMASHII. Especially the younger boys, who, as most teenager/20-somethings are wont to be, were full of piss and vinegar and also probably dead broke and without expectations of class improvement (see the stipend thing above). Think an entire generation of RETVRN romaboos, but legitimately engaged with the idea and without porn or Paradox videogames to divert their 'tism.

Context note 3: Kokugaku (national studies) was a popular academic movement around this time, focused on studying Japanese society from a nationalistic perspective (i.e. as opposed to sucking Chinese dick all the time, as much of the Japanese high class often did). One of the central ideas was the question of “Where does legitimacy come from?”, the answer to which was “From the emperor’s divine blood.” The Tokugawa Bakufu generally did not give much of a shit about all this because the next link in that chain of reasoning was “and since the Emperor endorses the shogunate, the shogunate is legitimate too”, so, hey, works out for us too. Ain’t like some sudden socially-cataclysmic even is gonna suddenly tank out social capital, right?

And then Perry happens. What with the Unequal Treaties and all, you had a whole generation of kids raised to overact about honor ‘n shit that just watched the Bakufu getting fucked in the ass without a fight, and thus feeling pretty salty about the whole thing. This anger undermined the legitimacy of the Bakufu, which led whole scores of 20-somethings assisting swordsmanship schools (basically the youth clubs of the time, but with a heavy militaristic bent) to ask themselves “If the Bakufu is no longer legitimate, where should authority reside?” And the Kokugaku circlejerks promptly answered: “In the emperor, of course.” And so the kids then asked, “shouldn’t we give authority back to the emperor then?”

And so that’s when shit started getting really funny. And stabby.

Scores of these disaffected youths began migrating to Kyoto, the ceremonial and otherwise politically irrelevant old capital, to be in the vague vicinity of the Emperor and in the hopes of just doing… SOMETHING. Fuck it, whatever, we got swords. Let’s go pledge to a lord or summin’.

Kyoto was the seat of the Kuge families, the old OLD aristocracy that had ruled Japan around the Heian period roughly eight hundred years prior, before the Buke families (warrior families, like the Minamoto) relegated them to little ceremonial roles of no relevance whatsoever in the orbit of the Emperor (of also no relevance whatsoever).

I want you to imagine someone like a modern English member of the House of Lords returning home one day to find a borderline illiterate 20-something in chain-mail and plate armor standing by their door claiming they want to pledge their allegiance to him to return political power to the rightful hands of their divine monarch. What happened in Kyoto was more or less that, except that Count Chucklesworth of Bumfuckshire might actually have had a great-grandfather who actually wielded true political power at some point. The Kuge were several centuries farther removed from anybody who might have ever mattered dick in their country, so this was way, way sillier.

Still, a lot of them said yes. Some actually liked having some muscle to wield in court, some might have thought it cute to have a ceremonial troupe of hangers-on like bulldogs, though most probably did the mental math regarding the risk of saying ‘no’ to a small gang of armed bumpkins and went, fuck it, sure, I’ll throw you a fiver or something if you guard my door.

This was uncomfortable for the Bakufu. In some minor measure because once-powerless aristocrats now were commanding armed gangs for the first time in centuries, but chiefly because having scores of disaffected, aimless young retards wandering a city with nothing to do was a powder keg waiting to blow.

The closest to a rallying point all these brave revolutionaries had was the movement known as “Sonno Joi”, literally “Honor the emperor – Drive out the barbarians”. This was their motto, rough goal, specific goal, military strategy, monetary policy, and plan for lunch. By which I mean, that’s as far as they had thought it out. Bit vague, you might say. Punchy and great for recruitment, bad for figuring out what, specifically, they were going to DO.

One inky winky obstacle for this plan, by the way, was that the Emperor Koumei very much wanted nothing to do with these cunts given that nobody in his family had wielded political power for the last millennium and change, give or take a few exceptions, and he liked it that way thank you very much. But let’s set that aside, because so did they.

Another thing these guys knew nothing about, was modern guns. Now, the Japanese knew about guns and used them extensively, they weren’t retarded, but these twenty-somethings had absolutely no idea how outdated their armaments were compared with modern western guns. Remember, it’s not like Perry’s arrival was broadcast on CNN, most of them had only heard vaguely of it.

This led to funny little episodes like the Shimonoseki affair, where a bunch of Choushu nationalists decided it would be a good idea to fire artillery at passing (unarmed) western merchant ships they saw as evil barbarian influences, prompting said evil barbarian governments to assemble a fleet to go blow their asses to dust, which they promptly did. After the punitive campaign, many of these Choushu loyalists figured out “ok, so maybe we do need to learn about these new weapons a bit”, which is how the task of modernizing the local forces fell in the hands of some foreign-trained dude (they had previously spat on) called Takasugi Shinsaku.

One Sonno Joi group was established in the Tosa Domain by a dude called Takechi Suizan, also including a friend of his called Sakamoto Ryoma. More on him later. These were the Tosa Kinno-to. Yes, these guys, that’s why they say “Kinnnobu”. One REALLY famous anecdote of this group was that Suizan wanted to gather money to reinforce their territory, so he asked a friend if he had any ideas. His friend suggested that they simply go to the rich people around and ask for money, arguing that if war came, the territory would be ruined and so would then, and if that didn’t convince them, they should kill themselves right there in front of them to demonstrate their honesty and dedication, calculating that they should relent around the time of the third dude they sent to commit seppuku. Apparently, Suizan thought the plan sounded good until some less retarded members of the Kinno-to pointed out that No, What the Fuck Is Wrong With You, so they never actually went through with it.

The Kinno-to were… tolerated by their Daimyo, who apparently thought them a bunch of endearing kids but absolutely did not want to sign up for any of their bullshit. The Kinno-to, being a bunch of hotheads, liked him, but blamed his indecision on governor Yoshida Toyo, the Diamyo’s right hand man, who was an outspoken reformist and modernizer. Suizan and the rest imagined that their Daimyo was totally on board with their ideas but was held back by his traitorous governor Toyo, because that’s the sort of dumb-ass “scheming vizier” story you come up with when you’re a hotheaded bunch of tards. So, a bunch of them (including one Okada Izou) went and assassinated Toyo, much to the horror of their Daimyo, who then had them all executed.

By sheer dumb luck, Ryoma had parted with the group and left the province (illegally) some time before this whole mess, so he escaped being embroiled in it.

Now, Ryoma was, by all accounts including his own, a stupid cunt as a kid and dropped out of school several times. BUT he was apparently very, very good with a sword. Like most samurai from bumpkin minor families, he had little prospect of advancement, and as a young man, became interested in politics, though not enough to learn properly. There’s an anecdote where he tries to impress one of his friends by showing him a complex Chinese treatise that his friend thought very brainy and hard to read. Except when Ryoma started to read aloud from it, his friend quickly realized Ryoma barely even understood Chinese, at which Ryoma claimed that he at least “got the gist of it.”

We know most of Ryoma’s life because he very often wrote to his favorite sister about whatever he was doing, which you might think is not the brightest thing to do as a political subversive but, well, I direct you to the “stupid cunt” thing above.

After he parted with the Sonno Joi and lucked out of getting butchered with the rest of his idiot friends, he wandered around and eventually settled on a plan to murder a dude called Katsu Kaishu, a prominent reformist who had studied abroad and was involved with the naval trade. The story of their (probably partly glamorized) encounter claims that Ryoma burst into his house to murder him for the crime of dealing with foreigners, but Kaishu convinced him to listen to his ideas, summed up vaguely as “I want to strengthen Japan too you dumb retard, but we need guns ‘n shit.” Ryoma was apparently so struck by his apparent first encounter with someone who had two brain cells to rub together that he instantly dropped his plans and begged Kaishu to take him as his student, which Kaishu agreed to do because, hey, kid’s got balls.

Under Kaishu, Ryoma learned the art of Not Being a Retard, and with his newly acquired brains, got put to work organizing trade fleets which, to the surprise of everyone including Ryoma himself, he was apparently very, very good at, and he liked it very much. The rice buyout he manages to organize during the Honnoji FINAL campaign is a reference to all this.

Around this time, he was staying over at an inn, where he started making sweet passes at a girl working there called Narasaki Ryo, better known as Oryo. Oryo’s mom was apparently easily tricked by swindlers (or a gambler), and one day someone burst into the inn to tell Oryo that someone had just swindled her mom into selling her two younger sisters, one to a brothel and another to a geisha house. According to Ryoma (this story being straight from his letters), Oryo immediately grabbed a dagger, walked out of the inn, and traveled to the brothel, with Ryoma following her. When she reached the brothel, she applied the gentle diplomatic art of kicking the door down and threatening to stab motherfuckers until they gave her sister back, picking a fight with a tattooed armed guard and howling at him that she’d stab his guts out if needed if he didn’t stand aside. There was apparently a shouting match between them that mostly consisted of “FUCK YOU I’ll KILL YOU / NO, I’LL KILL YOU” and eventually scared everyone to the point they figured it was worth giving the kid back rather than facing a possible double murder.

Ryoma, who thought this was the coolest thing he’d seen in his life, later helped her recover her other sister and asked her to marry him, bragging in his letters to his sister that he thought she was even tougher than him.

He would then go on to arrange his most famous stunt, the negotiation between Satsuma and Choushu, that would lead to the successful overthrow of the Shogunate.

What Satsuma and Choushu you ask? Well, it turns out not EVERYONE against the Bakufu was a retarded broke kid. The Shogunate had plenty of unhappy vassals for a plethora of reasons. One of them was the Fudai/Tozama distinction.

When, Ieyasu won by crushing the armies of Ishida Mitsunari (this twink) at Sekigahara, he solidified his rule by dividing all the leftover Daimyos into two groups: the ones that had allied with him BEFORE the battle became the Fudai Daimyo, and those who submitted afterwards became Tozama Daimyo. Only Fudai Daimyo had access to a number of perks and possibility of attaining various prestigious appointments, whereas the Tozama Daimyos were rewarded with the privilege of not being ground into a fine paste for having bet on the wrong horse.

The thing is, two and a half centuries later, this distinction was still solidly in place and kneecapping the ambitions of Daimyos who had grown up as loyal servants of the Tokugawa and whose grandparents’ grandparents hadn’t been alive at the time of Sekigahara, which felt a bit unfair. You can probably guess which camp the Choushu and Satsuma Daimyo belonged to.

Also, a basic bitch Samurai’s income was calculated in koku, a measure of rice. Cultivation techniques had improved a lot over the centuries, leading to much higher yields, and thus lower rice prices. Yet, the koku stipend had literally never been updated since they were set by Hideyoshi nearly three hundred years earlier. Meaning that a lot of Samurai (who legally could not hold another job) were dead broke, with no chance in hell of improving their stature on account of the whole “no wars to fight anymore” thing.

Satsuma was also the birthplace of Saigo Takamori. To sum: minor Samurai worked his way to being a prominent servant of the Satsuma Daimyo, a prominent reformist. He was exiled a couple of times for political reasons after his patron died, during which he studied a lot, and eventually ended back in Satsuma, strongly displeased with the Shogunate. He repeatedly managed to get the reformists out of hot water, though not quite committing to anything until Katsu Kaishu (yes, that guy) pulled his Sensible-Talk-no-Jutsu and convinced him to join the reformation. He tried to meet with a similarly disaffected forces of Choushu to arrange an alliance, which was not going well because both sides kept quibbling over protocol, until a buddy of Katsu you already know finally pulled off the meeting, which led to the successful Satsuma-Choushu alliance.

Despite being one of the architects of the Meiji Restoration, Takamori ended up dissatisfied when the reformists began cancelling the privileges of the Samurai class. He had gathered a following of disgruntled (soon-to-be-former) Samurai to advocate against these policies, though it’s unclear how far he ever MEANT to go. At one point though, some of his brasher followers decided to seize an arsenal to oppose the Meiji government directly, and when Takamori found out he reportedly said “shimatta”, which depending on the tone can mean anything from an ominous “It has begun” to “… oh, fuck.”

Takamori then led the Satsuma rebellion (using guns, because, again, not retarded) and after being wounded too harshly to keep going, committed seppuku.

Even if you’ve never heard of Takamori, virtually EVERY “last stand of the Samurai” dude in popular media is based on him, like the red dudes in Way of the Samurai 4 or Katsumoto from The Last Samurai. The title is partly a pun on his name since, although his name is written with different kanji, “saigo” can be read as “the last”.

Finally, let’s go back to Kyoto and its roving gangs of disaffected armed youth. Just because Suizai’s group was discouraged from his “let’s kill ourselves at them until they surrender” stunt, many, many, MANY others weren’t so sensible, and both minor groups and lone actors throughout Kyoto began performing murder-suicide political activism, killing foreigners, foreign collaborators, and even loyalists who weren’t loyalizing hard enough for their liking, and then committing suicide afterwards as a show of devotion.

Figuring that this shit was getting prickly, some in the Bakufu came up with the bright idea of deputizing their own stocks of disaffected youth. We give them a fancy title that don’t mean shit but makes them feel important, a uniform, and we set them to take care of the other bands of retards and hope this doesn’t go horribly, horribly wrong.

There were several of this, but the most famous group began with what was called the Roshigumi (Literally, “group of ronin”). They were assembled, trained and sent to Kyoto to begin their duties, until at the last minute their leader revealed himself to be a Sonno Joi sympathizer and the entire thing was disbanded and buried. Incidentally, during this, two of their members ended up picking a fight over perceived insults: Isami Kondo and Serizawa Kamo Serizawa.

After the shitshow collapsed, a second group was hastily assembled from some remaining members of the Roshigumi centered on Kondo: the Shinsengumi (literally, “the newly selected group”, cause everyone must have been too sick of this shit to get clever with names at the time). They would go on to do way less than you’d think based on their massively overinflated media profile.

The End

Nothing changed about the other LBs, only LB5 was necessary. Olga coming out like that was unexpected but also not relevant according to Kirei. Still probably gonna play some role in the finale but so far only Paladin Mashu is an actual threat to Marisbury's plan, at least according to Galahad.

If then they got rid of her (except not really, but this doesn't really matter), then they got absolutely nothing out of the LBs. So why did the Alien God side did anything that they do?

Literally LB1 is the most important one because are the reason Chaldea got kicked out the based and Chaldeas can do anything.

My point is that they got absolutely nothing out of the LBs unless they switch around the plot and reveal that they actually wanted all 7 to serve as sacrifices for Chaldeas' HGW style. Hell Daybit specifically said: "七つの異聞帯が切除された時、ヤツの人理保障は完成する" when talking about the LBs.
Anonymous No.539809556 >>539809775

>Kirsch could have sent his servants instead of Kadoc and nothing would have changed,
Not really. LB1 works because Kadoc is Guda's foil, and has the most character development of all Part 2 cast, and maybe the whole fucking game. That's how awful other characters got treated.
It's also the most important LB in OC4 which was important to the entire plot overall.
Kirsch's relevant to showcase the prime species stuff but Nasu added that bullshit in OC3.
However, all the "alien god" subplot could have been cut and nobody would care for it. The only plot relevant Olga is third ascension one who isn't connected to U Olga. Her role against ORT could have been replaced by fucking Camazotz and NotQuetz figuring out shit earlier and have a team up, which would make Chaldea less stupid in squandering the presence of the guy who BTFO ort once by making Guda act out of character near him.

She literally is. Not the real Olga or the Olga who is plot relevant. Absolutely NOTHING changed in the plot by her existence.
The Importat Olga is the third ascension who has "Living Human," a different personality and the OP song as passive. Her existence is obviously tied in to the priestess.
The Clown was a filler character who changed and added nothing to the story.

According to Nasu, FGO is about Roman's way of life, so you can change the plot of part 2 and make it about the Ultimate Ones invading the planet, but part 1 needs to stay like that. Novum Chaldea ideals and foundation are based on Roman's ideals.

The Alien God wasn't even needed when Marisbilly plans proceeded without a hiccup.
That's the point, you can remove this "Alien God" shit which only exists as warmer spot for U Olga and the actual plot can move without it because it did.
We already knew Olga was important and connected to the priestess since Lostroom. U Olga was the story's greatest filler character and time waster.

"Alien God" was already the Wind one. Alien God was a Servant but the role as a Servant makes no sense in light of Moneybills' plot and subplot with Chaldeas. It feels like Nasu's attempt to give Olga(face) more exposure before the ending, but he didn't think about it well. It's still filler.
