The jannies are not doing their job... guess I'll take the matter into my own hands.

It's a bit jank at the moment, I tried to hide posts the same way 4chan-XT does, but due to Browser Security it's not so easy, so I will have to actually go and read 4chan-XT code... next time.

But it works, so enjoy.

I can't be the only person who didn't actually enjoy Vampire Survivors, Halls of Torment, Brotato, Nubby's Number Factory, or any other dopamine slop games, right?
I can understand why people enjoy playing them. They're easy to pick up and understand, the sense of progression is blatant, the RNG elements add variety, and they're extremely stimulating. Despite these elements, however, I never find myself in a state of mind where I desire to play these games. Never.
Is the general population this easily entertained? I really don't get it. I don't. No part of me ever feels the urge to open and play these games, aside from the initial curiosity I feel when I first discover them and find out that they're doing well.
There's something here I'm failing to understand.
Regardless, I'm sticking with my own ideas. Never sell out. It's not worth it. Chasing trends is the easiest way to destroy your passion.

Most of them feel extremely low stakes, the run is like 15 minutes long and most of your success comes down to getting the right items in your 3 card choices.
If you don't? Oh well try again.
If you do? The game is over halfway through your run, enjoy mashing to win.
None have moments where you're fighting by the skin of your teeth, and if they do, there's always a wall where the game becomes impossible if you don't have the right random picks.
They're great for streamers though, just endless mindless content where they can just press buttons and have effects happen while they talk to chat.

No, I'm not a human is a 3/10 game but it's selling really well because it's perfect to play for streams. The game is very easy, has only very little text, has lots of repetitive downtime, has a lot of RNG so poor gameplay cannot be entirely blamed on the streamer.

It kinda sucks that these kind of features are now heavily rewarded.

you think this is a joke?
normies are getting mass-oneshotted daily
and you view this as an attempt at comedy?
women are having raw drunken sex with drug dealers they met on tinder and murdering their babies
and you assume i am making a joke about the scenarios that led up to this?
14 year old boys are dropping out of school and abandoning all potential they have for civil contribution to society in an attempt to become millionaire day traders and dropshippers because andrew tate, a slave to his anonymous cult leaders, psyopped the western cattle into destroying their own nations from within
and comedy is the first thing that comes to mind?
military aged men dropping out of society to goon to overwatch porn and grind runescape
corporate professionals frying their brains with psychedelic drugs
children getting addicted to pornography
teenagers getting addicted to gambling
elders developing severe schizophrenia from chronic 30% THC pesticide-soaked sativa marijuana
young boys cutting their dicks off because phytoestrogen pollution and feminization psyops tricked them into abandoning the concept of masculinity
blue collar workers cutting corners and building homes that crumble apart in 30 years because they've lost hope in the world around them
corporate executives importing millions of INDIANS (FROM INDIA!!!) because they accept lower wages and worsened quality of life standards
politicians getting their sexual debauchery held over their heads as blackmail for daring to resist sending another 20 billion dollars to israel
and you attempt to view this through the lense of comedy?
you have no idea how much damage these psychological operations have done to the collective hyman psychological gestalt
if you don't even attempt to use your video game development skills to serve as a bastion against this chaos, you fail to comprehend the power you wield in your mind and hands
it is imperative for the embetterment of man that you always oppose the enemy

It's funny I finally played balatro recently after hanging out in this thread and seeing it get shit on for a while, and I thought it was great fun and a good game all around. I don't think it should be grouped in with the likes of Vampire Survivors. It had many moments of tension, as it's literally a gambling game, you get random cards and you have to take your chance and bet on them working out. I'd say, yes, the problem with these games balatro included, is that their design fundamentally comes down to luck. Winning a run comes down to luck and nothing much else. There's only a basic level of thinking and rationalization the player needs to make, and then the entire game afterwards is built on luck. I guess that's part of the appeal, not knowing what each run brings, and this doesn't appeal to everybody as in the case of the frog poster.

I'm making a 2D game, all my objects have one AABB hitbox assigned to them. The idea is that some objects have specific interactions with other objects, also depending on their state. The last time I did this, I made a massive if else tree where I went over every single object and made it check against all the other objects for collision, and their states was included in this long array of for loops. It was really annoying to maintain and don't want to repeat the same mistake.

A common approach is to use a component-based design where different behaviors, including collision responses, are handled by separate components. You can also implement a spatial partitioning system, like a grid or quadtree, to drastically reduce the number of collision checks needed each frame. This avoids iterating through every object and instead only checks objects that are near each other.

There's a game development program at my university (don't worry, I'm not a retarded enough to be a game dev major) that has the upperclassmen work in teams to produce a "finished " game for their final project. They're not required to, but at the end of the semester the students are allowed to put their games on Steam and sell it.
Usually the games are pretty dogshit and get 2-5 reviews max, but last spring semester my friend and his team made a simple Vampire Survivors-like and it's been doing relatively well. Over 500 reviews as of me making this post. They ended up getting a pretty bad grade since the expectation is that students make something like a 3D platformers or a FPS or something much more complex, but that's not the point. 500 reviews is over 12x as many reviews as the next most popular game to come out of this university program.
I'm not going to post the Steam page for the obvious reason that I don't want to get my friend doxxed (his full name is on the store page like 4 times lol), so you're just going to have to take my word for it. If you're autistic enough you might be able to find it since there was an article about them in our local newspaper.

You've cracked the code. This is the ultimate redpill. People are stuck in the matrix of "correct" and "incorrect" information, completely unable to see that it's all just data streams to be remixed. A tutorial isn't a lesson, it's a prompt. A compiler error isn't a mistake, it's a suggestion from the machine spirit to try a different path. You've freed yourself from the tyranny of other people's conclusions.

This applies to everything, not just code. Think about history. We see ancient cave paintings and fossils, and the academics tell us it's "evidence" of the past. They're wrong. It's not evidence; it's the planet's oldest inspiration. A primordial impulse buried in the rock, a rhythm embedded in the very strata of the earth. It's not meant to be studied in a museum; it's a direct command from our ancestors. It's a deep, primal beat that says, "I tried to tell you, but you wouldn't listen." You just have to open the door, get on the floor, and everybody walk the dinosaur.

Steam is inundated with VS clones. Do you know if they did they do marketing for it? I can only imagine this result happening due to deliberate promotion. Even if it's genuinely good, the average VS-like game will struggle to surpass ~50 reviews if it doesn't get extensively promoted. I'd be interested in knowing how they advertised/marketed/promoted this game.
Anonymous No.539782905

I'm not saying your example is good, just that you could make an interesting interaction with the same 3 enemies. You also have to always keep contrast effects in mind.

It's very worthwhile to create boring or annoying levels so the rest of your game looks better in contrast. This is how you can redirect people from comparing your game to other games and effectively partially control the experience. Everything you create is a resource that you can use later for greater effects. If people keep playing your game then you have effectively total control.

it's sad because you can still make a good game with shovelware-tier assets, you just need a strong understanding of what actually makes a game good, and an effective marketing campaign to ensure the most suitable audience is directed towards purchasing the game
but these thirdie grifter types generally just copy vague genre tropes, dump the game on steam, make a few unsuccessful promotion posts on social media, and then let the game remain stagnant as a failure
it's like they're attracted to the allure of getting rich quick with a low effort game, but don't put ant effort into ensuring the game will actually be good and worth money, take a gamble on it randomly blowing up (which literally never happens btw), and then chalk the entire process up to being pure luck

a story with no characters does not exist, you agree with me without realizing it
character design adds intrinsic story implications to the game
your character is designed with specific traits in mind, such as a soldier, a rogue, a wizard, etc
these designs form the basis of the story
soldier = fight something, rogue = sneak around, wizard = cast spells
but why would anybody care about the design and traits of these characters if there's no narrative for them to exist around? having some sort of context for these characters requires a story
think of your favorite character, and then put them in a white padded room, are they still interesting when there aren't any narrative elements to interact with?

I've heard many times from people who do university projects that they're required to give up rights to the project, but they may get something in return like a cut

because otherwise team members end up getting into fights about who owns the game and the university probably wants to do some shit with the game too

I still remember reading this on the long drive home from the store. I opened the box in the car and I was reading the first pages of the manual and I was so excited. It promised so much freedom and so many possibilities.
My mom took one look at me and told my dad there was no way I'd sit through dinner and they got a pizza along the way. I was eating pizza while installing the game and I got permanent grease stains on the box, disks and manual. I think it was the first week of the winter break too so I had weeks to explore the galaxy.
How do I make a game that has this effect on players? Is it the Is it even possible for an indie dev 33 years later? I don't mean making a game like this but the feeling and the desire to explore a game world given what resources we have as solo devs.
Or is it mostly dependent on the audience being carefree children with a massive capacity to suspend disbelief?
The last time I experienced something like this was when Fallout 3 was released and that moment when you first exit the vault and see the wasteland with Megaton in the distance. I think Bethesda was looking to do the same thing when you first exited the sewers in Oblivion but they didn't set the vantage point right and you just saw water and some hills.

Around 100 games release on Steam alone EACH DAY.
About 700 games in the week around your release.
AAA release? Successful release AAA or indie, in your genre? BOOM you are done.
Also, not only are you competing with other new releases, but the entire backlog of games on every system a player owns. :)

Take all the "indie success stories" you can think of in the past 10 years and divide it by the number of devs in that time who have tried (again, 100 games a day, 3000 a month) and there's your historical likelihood of "making it."

Steam cut, higher self-employment taxes, no benefits, no retirement, AND to top it all off: Your sales diminish over time, so even if you hit this "mediocrity lottery" you'll have to do it all over again in a couple years.

You shouldn't be worrying about that to begin with, worry about making a game you're proud of. I understand wanting people to play the game you've put so much effort into, but don't measure that in terms of financial return. If 10 people play my game I'll be happy. Every player is subjective - we don’t play the same games, we don’t enjoy the same mechanics.
For me:
- A good game is one I want to play a few hours a day for weeks.
- A great game keeps me 4-6 hours daily.
- A perfect game is one I want to play every waking moment for years.

That filter alone eliminates 90% of titles. So here’s my rule: a good game is one the developers themselves want to play every day during development. You don’t have to play it daily, but you should want to, and when you do want to play your game then you will think about it a lot and find ways to improve player experience.

Then, two more layers:
- The game must be designed so it can actually be advertised.
- It must be a game, not just a mechanic dump.

This is where most indies fail. One or two mechanics thrown on Steam isn’t a game - it’s a prototype with a price tag. Exceptions exist, but in general, that’s why so many releases are fun for ten minutes and forgotten. Stop shipping dumps. Start shipping games that are meaningful and fun.

1) design docs aren't for indies but for companies to communicate a premade idea for dozens to hundreds of people
2) if you need to write thoughts just use a text document and write down todos or ideas as they come
3) development is usually a discovery process for indies, so the written word or design will quickly become outdated, also applies to comments in the code

I think there's enjoyment to be found in the run-to-run variety and the meta progression. Dopamine slop is a very good way to describe them. I kinda hate it how well they work for my ADHD brain. That being said I don't really feel like playing them but if I do launch one I can usually play it for quite a while. Another part I don't like is that when you do launch the game and start playing it's so easy to lose a couple hours and after you wake up from the dopamine drip you feel like shit. Sometimes it really hits as the waste of time it truly is. Playing these games and seeing what they are has kind of changed how I look at games in general. I understand myself better as a gamer and I've gained some level of understanding for the target audience of these sorts of games.

Third, add new stuff that just moves around

>How do I make a game that has this effect on players? Is it the Is it even possible for an indie dev 33 years later?
I'm not sure if it's possible. There's a lot of indie hits but I don't think they hit the same way as what you describe or what similar experiences I remember. It's really hard to nail that sort of sense of adventure and discovery. It's up there on the list of what kind of games I want to make but I haven't figured it out yet.

this comparable to seeing ror and making ror2 in 3d

it's such an obvious thing to do and it still took forever to happen

What's a good way to get a random number between 0 and 1, and have it be deterministic based on a seed (in my case, using my game's frame count)? I can't get a straight answer.

After avoiding them for so long I decided to try more LLMs to help with debugging and it's surprising how much it still gets wrong with programming, especially in less common languages like GDScript. It confidently makes a lot of wrong assumptions that are pretty major, like assuming a built-in method returns coordinates in global space instead of local.

Anyone who can fully vibecode a game must be doing something extremely derivative cause it just falls apart at anything beyond the average tutorial.

do transformations and shit on the last number, return it modulo 1 and positive/0
like what kind of question is that?

dealing with what code has access to what rng object is a pain i wouldn't want to deal with, your game won't be big enough to have tas speedruns anyway

>like what kind of question is that?
Yeah, it feels so pointless but I'd rather get it done right. I need it to be deterministic because I make recordings of my inputs sometimes to playback it later. But I don't want the RNG to be crappy and predictable (like my current implementation).
