I really liked Rinascitas first region, and Septimont grew on me as well but I also can't say I enjoyed exploration more than 1.0. The wings are partly to blame for this, took me way longer to internalise what's what and where because it makes it seem so disjointed. I had to deliberately ignore the flying to make it exciting again.

I think you're ignoring the fact that there's a much simpler reason for focusing on a single character at a time. It's simply easier from a story telling perspective to flesh out one character when you don't have to work in the 3 other people sucking the air out of room.
