The two big things are the radar barely working, sometimes finally locking within fox-3 range, dropping tracks due to wide-ass doppler filter super easy (a bandit turning cold is a guaranteed lost lock), and now you've wasted one fox-1 out of the measly two.

The other is the caveman-tier RWR. Apparently the only emitter you have a launch warning against is the ancient Nike-Hercules, which isn't even in DCS, and the emitter categories are kinda esoteric, like good luck recognizing an airborne TWS radar from a ground EWR, and whether it's already guiding a missile at you.

I don't own the Phantom to compare it, but I think that's its BLUFOR technological equivalent. The F-14 and Mirage 2000 both outclass it.
Anonymous No.541784887

*fox-2 range

You only get a lock close enough to warrant heaters. And since the controls don't have a HOTAS dogfight/ACM/IR missile override switch like western analogues, nor a Tomcat-style HOTAS weapon-selector, on the real plane the pilot has to flip the inboard/outboard switch on the side panel (!), and crank the mode selector knob on the top of the instrument panel into the appropriate mode. Fucking lunacy.

this is doctrinal and intentional, soviets didn't bother to waste resources putting good radar on planes when they expected to use ground radar to acquire and vector interceptors to targets.
western jets are fundamentally designed to go out and pick their own individual fights, eastern jets are designed to collectively defend the motherland.

I have the Phantom and I can say its rwr is still far better than ShitPO-15. The ALR-46 has 360 degrees detection and it can track 16 different radar sources. While it can't detect missile launch from an airborne threat, it has no trouble doing so with SAM at all

no, it was also kind of shit and easy to jam or destroy, good at OTH early threat detection but mostly inferior to a layered system for precision tracking individual targets.

I read an article years and years ago about Bulgarian Frogfoot pilots on exercise with A-10's. They claimed that in daylight, once they spot the target they're just as effective at destroying them as the A-10.

That's the point. Even in Afghanistan fast-movers struggled with how little time they had to identify, line up, fire their shot and break away, and then find the target again, because they're already several nm away when they start their turn for the next strafe.

These straight-wing slow-boys can provide CAS in a more relaxed manner, with being able to spend more time with the target in the HUD, maintaining a visual while circling, yadda-yadda.

Sounds like a job for the M-346FA. EW self defence and jamming capabilities, 120/chaff flares without losing hardpoints unlike the yak-130, dual engines for better survivability, DASS/MAWS, AESA radar (soonβ„’) tactical data and missile link, agile and cute. Unsurprising for the shitshow that is ED, but for a full-clicky they'd have to do a fresh start anyway.

Not that they'd have to make everything from scratch either, most avionics already exist in other full-clicky modules, like most instruments on the panel, the RWR, the HUD looks suspiciously like the Mi-24P HUD, etc.

this is how their commercial business model works. they sell the 3D shell, the flight model, and the sim environment to a government which then fills in that pretend weight with their own classified specs and systems.
if they pick a model that's simple enough to be declassified, which they can then release on the consumer side to double-dip on returns for their dev investment, it's a win-win for ED.

Not all drones yet, you still need a helicopter to chase anything that sustains more than 80-100 mph or so, or if you want to have a gimmick airborne commentator for high dollar events (ex.: Tour De France). With drones, basically you can have it go fast but with a fixed camera (FPV drone), or you can have a gimbal stabilized camera, but not both on the same airframe yet.

I don't know.
Maybe the T-50N due to it being 80% Locksneed, and we know just how strong their political hold is even if it waned a bit after the F-35 delays.
If the USN ever plans to return to land their trainers on carriers (extremely hard with their current situation) or even just a full FCLP then the totally-not-scorpion, turkish funded Freedom Trainer would be the one I feel like has the most chances of being chosen, as SNC has stated they will make it carrier compatible.
I have a lot of doubts on them being able to do it but it's still less complicated than modifying an already existing design for carrier ops. In this regard the T-50 would be the one facing an uphill battle considering it's basically a baby F-16.
But for all I know *hint hint* the T-7 could sweep the rug under everyone else's feet and win this one as well. Maybe even the FA/XX if we want to stick it unlubed to NG.
Last candidate is the Stiletto which is just a ploy to get their name out in the open, if it wins I'll tatoo a yak-130 on my forehead.

But it will not stop Boeing from lying and claiming their flyaway cost is less than all the competitors, claim production is just about to start and once they have the contract signed tell them it's going to be delayed and the final cost is going to be much higher. They did it to the USAF, why can't they do it to the USN?
We *might* get the news of who will build the FA/XX soon, if Boeing gets that as well it's going to cement what I heard and they will also get the T-7. If not then my money is on the T-50.

its not worth it, standalone, just neat, but rls career mode, some mod you can get reaaaally fleshes it out and makes it almost worth it. not enough to buy the game for it, but its definitely promising. they need to just hire/contract those dudes to work on that shit asap because it could easily be the selling point for the entire thing.

im not really a sim racing guy, or even really an irl car guy, so your mileage will vary. it seems a lot better then a decade ago. the games MUCH better with a proper wheel set up, and its "okay" with a controller, i use some knock off xbox controller. barely tolerable with mouse/keyboard. but if your willing to play around, its got a LOT of configuration for tweaking the controls. i care more about being able to drive a limo offroad and thrashing it to death and trying to drive it around after losing a wheel then it "feeling 1:1 to irl".
people seem to love it or hate it.
its also got a mod now for multiplayer, free one, so you can tool around with some friends, it works pretty decently. keeps the crashing and deformation online without too much buggy crap. again, mileage will vary. every new major update breaks a shitload of the mods in the repositry and for me thats a huge pain in the ass, going from 300 mods and a shitload of random cars back to just the stock ones and figuring out what broke every time.

theres also people making mods like simulating thermal/tire wear/yadda yadda, and the aerodynamics are good enough there are actual planes in it that actually fly using the aerodynamics itself. kinda fun to dick around with a b2 bomber, turn too hard and overload the frame and watch the wings literally fold and then crash into the ground at 1% speed to see how it crumples. or now you can hit a tree just right and actually rip your car entirely in half with some of the current vanilla cars, or just have so much hp your engine block rips itself out of the engine bay. its getting there, but yeah, never ever going to exit early access imo. the collab with automation seems pointless unless you really do like acoustically (not fixing that) tuning an entire car and engine from the ground up.
Anonymous No.542130421 >>542131403

and they do really seem to be putting constant, good work into the game. every update has them going back and reworking a few of the cars, and adding new properly fully fleshed out cars. the last big one was some 1930's model t knock off, and they added configs and parts for old bootleggers, 60's era hot rodding, 1940's land speed configs, all the way up to modern restomod stuff from 2000+. cant garuntee they wont just drop it out of the blue someday, but so far, they really do seem to care and treat it like a real job, instead of just stringing out the userbase with drip fed content to keep that patreon money train going

Anonymous No.542132282
>>542131403
i have automation, dont recall if i bought it (pretty sure when they linked the games, they did a promotion and heavily discounted both, so i just probably got it becuz cheap). they are linked, and you can "export" your cars from automation right into beamng and drive them around, complete with destruction/deformation simulation. HOWEVER, its not perfect, the cars imported from automation are obviously "lower quality", and wont deform/crumple as realistically as the vanilla or even decent mod cars. but if its your jam, it does mean you get to actually drive your automation creations around in a proper world.
as for automation itself? ive never actually played it, im not really interested in that level of detail, tuning, designing cars from scratch. but i do see people doing stuff like "heres my super hyper mileage car from automation, gets 250 miles per gallon!" and its paired with the 3d model exported from it. so, kinda neat, you get to actually drive your stuff. youd have to ask someone else about if automation itself is worth it.
