Kind of but not really. Rocks mom is alive but she's literally just a nobody. Kain is still up to his plans but nobody seems to really care just going I understand but I can't let you etc etc but no one actually does anything. Andy finally beats Terry but they do it in the most safe way possible making it look like a pity win because Lord forbid terry gets handed a solid loss. Freeman is indeed alive and takes Mary hostage but it last for all of thirty seconds before he's thrown back in jail. Those are all valid reasons to expect a success though. People talk about how they don't want to play KOF because it's 3v3 all the time. COTW is the most non-shit looking modern SNK game to date(though still not very great). Crossing over with Capcom was thought to have maybe gave SNK some interest, and the big marketing campaign was the first time for a SNK product, and helped it to be more aware-of to people other than a very small few like the rest of the time. But even with all those things, sadly, the product itself SNK put out was still mediocre. It feels outdated in tons of ways, just like the previous games modern SNK has released. Not to mention the other things like shitty celebs that zero human-beings wanted nor asked for.

SNK completely blew it. 1v1 game that is vastly easier than KOF, and they somehow managed to put out something that made zero impact, and did even less than what KOF does these days. This is like the 5th layup people and other companies have tried to give SNK. Unfortunately, it seems like the people there just don't have the talent and sanity high enough to ever capitalize on them. If COTW doesn't have it's SFV/Tekken 7 type turn-around, I don't know what the fuck SNK can do after this. Even if they make KOF 16 more braindead and it actually looks good, I don't think it'll matter at that point. The goodwill people have for them is basically in the dirt.

Okay, since it's clear that SNK has lost their edge when it comes to the story, I have a few ideas for a grittier alternate FF story.

While Andy does have the perfect building blocks to be a villain, the best part of his character is that he has this darkness but chooses to be better. In many ways he's a better foil to Geese than Terry is. You don't have to make him evil and pit him against his brother to do something with that. You can easily just give him something to do. For example, while Terry has Geese, give Krauser to Andy as his main rival and expand on their similarities and contrasting traits. Expand on the enemies of the Shiranui that Andy's always harping on. Give him an arc with his inner darkness similar to dark Ryu but better since Shadow Andy isn't just mindlessly evil but just Andy leaning into his darker traits without fully losing his moral code. You could make him sort of the Red Hood to Terry's Batman for South Town and let them have conflict over that since Andy is or at least was a trained killed and has less issues killing evil people than Terry does. Explore that ten year gap between the brothers and Terry reconciling with how his brother's changed from the soft, timid little kid he knew to a man who's fully willing to bloody his hands to protect their father's hometown. Tack on exploring Andy's resentment towards his brother making him feel like he could never be strong enough unless he defeated him one day and you have something nuanced and emotionally resonant. You easily could have a conflict and weighty resolution to that conflict without just making Andy evil and killing him.

SNK Fighting Games since KOF 2002 onward except Samsho have always been this way. The system-mechanics make all the characters play the exact same. Personally, I feel like Rock should have became a crime boss like Geese but not out of ambition for power and control but after spending time with Kain he develops a more gray morality. Or rather just becomes less afraid of that darker side of himself and learns to embrace it without losing himself to it. Have him see all the gangs fighting for control and how it negatively impacts the innocent, vulnerable people in South Town especially women and children reminding him of how hard it was for him and his mother. Have him learn it was an unintended result of Terry killing Geese and how Geese managed to keep these gangs and corrupt elite under control, seeing his father still negatively but from a different perspective at the same time. Eventually culminating in him taking control of Howard Connection as the true heir and bringing Kain and Billy and Mr.Big under his thumb just like his dad did but not going fully corrupt, his focus is genuinely on controlling crime and corruption, gradually wiping it out, and genuinely improving the city in a way Terry never could.

If Kain can possess whatever this powerful object is or prove himself at the top of this tournament, his citystate could gain notoriety and be formally acknowledged. it'd be cheeky if Geese's Legacy wasn't a real thing at all and it was all just a ploy from Franz to get strong fighters together to prove themselves and he's unaware of all the political bullshit brewing around it. maybe this all borrows too much from other royalty plotlines though but I think at the least it provides more justification for the setting. the curse of legacy is a critical theme of this series. I want to see people dead and killing each other over something meaningless. force them to examine for themselves why they fight and what they actually want in the end. something something outrunning the circle of time

If SNK isn't dropping a balance patch the fucking minute the SWC finishes this game is donezo. Even casual viewers are constantly complaining in chat that every match outside of pools are the same 4 characters, and their own matchup charts show that there is a significant balance problem in favour of Kain, Hokutomaru, Hotaru, and Billy. Taking the cane to Billy's legs was a step in the right direction because he's the least overwhelmingly good character of the 4 gods, the philosophy they took with him needs to be applied to the other 3 lest they risk not having a second SWC when even the actual player base stops tuning in to events.
