One of the great thing about joining secret santa is that you get assigned a target.
This target makes you hone in on just one guy for 5+ weeks you can track them down and find out things about them in the meetups. You can ask the organizers on what time they usually login etc. so you can observe them or befriend them

yesterday I went on vrchat with my quest 2, got off, came back and couldn't get it to start again, I get steamlink error 451. I've since tried about everything.

Restarted, reinstalled steamvr, reinstalled vrchat, reinstalled meta quest link, factory reset quest 2, updated nvidia drivers, disabled HAGS, lowered graphics settings in steamVR, tried using with and without link cable. Tried buying virtual desktop and using that. Nothing has changed.

I can play vrchat on the headset itself, privy to the limitations thereof, but I can't get the fucking thing to run from the PC. I had squadrons installed and it has similar problems, but at least that can get into the menu for a bit before it bitches out.

the controls are clearly being streamed to the computer, I can see it look around in real time and react to moving the controllers on the computer monitor. But nothing comes back to the headset.

I plan to buy the steam frame when it comes out, but I don't really want to be stuck palying on desktop or quest until then, is there something I haven't tried, short of reinstalling windows?

You can find good help, you just usually have to go through a couple of grifters that don't take insurance multiple times across multiple years spending thousands of dollars while they milk you for all you're worth while providing as little help as possible, before you finally find someone that's... not *as bad* as the rest.

It's sad that I've seen this same story with multiple /vrg/ people and just people in VR in general.

There's a server browser and the plan is to basically find a server and all jump in the same one. No team swapping unfortunately but at least we'll be playing VR GAMES. Will announce the server at the time, and we may need to hop servers if there's not room for someone or whatever. Updates here.

AWS is the most expensive. The first thing I'd try is bunnyCDN or some other smaller CDN, since they'll charge per use and not just over time. What I use is a VPS from (insert provider here). Requires a bit more setup, but for hosting media it's almost as simple as running Apache and then copying files to the webroot and just using those links. Don't even need a domain, can use a dynamic DNS free service, or spend the $3 on a cheap domain and set up letsencrypt SSL as well.

Storage is usually a premium. Just upload what you are about to watch and remove it when done. I've not used bunnyCDN but I know others use it and it should be reasonably straight forward to just move anime you want to watch to a container or space and then have links pop out.

As a note; hardcoded sub H264s are what work. MKVs, softsubs, none of that shit works.

Tried out some Forefront. I thought it was great. I had no weird wobble effect like some anon said he experienced. The gunplay is fine for what it is, I didn't expect H3VR gun handling to begin with. The vehicles work surprisingly well, I never got around to try the tank, but the helicopters and the atv was fun to drive around in.

I think I had more fun playing this than I've had playing Pavlov in a long time. The only real issues I encountered was the sniper scope kind of freezes at certain points which I assume which was a bit annoying at times. The helicopter controls feels kind of weird, wish it was a bit more like VTOL or those VRChat prefabs where you have a throttle and a stick, but it works alright once you get a bit used to it.

Where do I, as a friendlet, go to hang out with people when there aren't any events on?

Out of pure curiosity, I tried that human reaction time benchmark test both on my normal 144hz monitor and via the quest 3 with virtual desktop and only got about 20-30ms lower scores on average. 170 vs 190-200.

It's hard to judge if the latency truly is only 30ms extra especially in VR mode.
I would assume you were using virtual desktop's "desktop" mode, but it uses different streaming settings when in this mode compared to VR streaming mode (because it needs a lot less bandwith and decoding).
The input method can come into play, for instance, when using the same mouse but trying to press with your thumb instead of your index, people can get 20ms of difference, so q3 controllers could either improve or decrease your performance to begin with

What kind of errors are you getting with VD?
What are your specs?
VD specifically still requires that you install Oculus slop if you have the VD driver enabled ( which it is by default ), though you can also just disable the driver. With the driver disabled you /must/ launch VD using the "Start SteamVR" button inside VR, otherwise it won't work.
You can have a look at the SteamVR console (see image) to see if there's anything obviously fucky going on there.
Resolution just being set too high does tend to be the reason for Steamlink specifically to shit itself, but that shouldn't make all the other solutions poop themselves too

Webmrelated is how the latency was tested by anons. Using a high framerate video recording and flicking the controller. Screen changes color when controller movement is detected. It's full motion to photon delay. Some tests included desktop mode with flicking a mouse.

Results: its usually around 10 ms for mouse - monitor, 40 ms VR controller - display port connected headset.

40 ms for a VERY low resolution and bitrate VR WiFi headset with it going up to 70-120+ ms for higher resolutions and bitrates.
SteamVR Link manages to stay low due to foveated encoding and Valve magic.

How much upload bandwidth do you have? If you have enough to do other video streaming (through d*scord or whatever), then you can host the video locally and reverse proxy through any free-tier VPS, e.g. oracle, then you're only limited by your own local storage. Or if you're not CGNAT'd by your ISP/router you can even host directly and it'll work (can use a different port if they block 80). You don't need a domain or TLS. If you pay for anything though, IMO get a cheap domain first, which lets you use all the cloudflare stuff (tunnel for reverse proxy, backblaze for some free non-local storage).

And while it might be obvious, if you're just watching by yourself, you don't need any public internet. use caddy (or whatever http server) locally and put the localhost urls into the vrchat player.

Yes, I can exist per normal in the void, basically indefinitely, but it immediately shits itself upon starting VRchat or SW squadrons. Or even the steam home thing, although it usually works for a minute or two.

Even after it's failed and thrown error 451,the head tracking is clearly working in VRchat on the computer, but the video is not being streamed back to the quest 2. The audio comes through a little but is is almost unrecognizably chopped and stuttered.

Played forefront, it is fun. Forgor to record though.

Most of the VR interactions are pretty good. Medic revives, the zipline and respawn point knob minigame on recon, parachuting, mounted MGs. The weird jank with the sniper scope freezing is annoying but still fun to be a useless piece of shit on the bridge missing 90% of the shots. Netcode overall seems decent, even if all the rifles/SMGs have the sort of chintzy pea shooter feel as they do in breachers. Vehicles feel nice and arcadey. The iceland map is a little bleak but the russia one is good.

IMO they should do manual throwing on the grenades instead of the off-hand guide. Game is chaotic enough that the precision doesn't feel necessary. medic and assault just throwing out ammo and health packs is a bit weird but inoffensive. The reloading is simultaneously too streamlined and too jank, where you yank out the mag, grab a new one in the same place on your chest and sometimes chamber a round. But the mag doesn't spawn sometimes until you like yank the empty mag out twice, and its hitbox is small. compared to pavlov's "anywhere on the waist".

Good bones overall though, fun even if you have to deal with squeakers

inside-out tracking is as accurate, if not more than base stations, and "infinite tracking volume" is completely irrelevant, rarely are your hands ever out of your pov, and when they are you really don't need super precise tracking, meta realized it was stupid to track what's going on above your head and fixed this by placing all of the cameras on the bottom with the quest 3
base stations are also unreliable as fuck because they use motors. Moving parts fucking suck
inside-out tracking is more reliable, cheaper, and more convenient. The only downside is that it's kind of hard to get right, which is why you see companies like pimax or bigscreen depending on steam tracking

nothing crashes. I can quit the game from the PC end, but the headset stays stuck at error 451. I can close steamlink on the headset and go back to the normal menus.

occasionally if I sit around long enough, it will say it resolved it's issue, load a single frame of the game, and then go back to error 451. I've just tried it on another network entirely to the same result.

You're supposed to use your right and they put some code in the game to make it easier but it still doesn't feel good.
Basically you shoot, ungrip and then instantly press trigger on your right hand and it should grab the bolt instantly if nothing goes wrong. If it misses then you're fucking and you need to spam trigger to find the grab box for the bolt.
