I feel like the game has a capacity for strategy but I can’t tell if it’s meant to be near one hitapaloozas or just the result of people not upgrading their shit/using level one units and they get bulkier as you go.

Mid tiers are generally where the one-hit-kills come into play, but higher tiers do get decently bulky. It's less about stacking defense and HP and more about being able to out-heal incoming damage, I'd say; which lends itself well to strategy since you have to pick the right times to heal, when to attack a vital enemy, or when to just use a movement trick to avoid (or even redirect) damage entirely. And that's not to mention things like mind games, anticipating the opponent's moves, or specific weapon builds that give an edge...Things really do get a lot more tactical once you're dealing with people who know how to both fight and trick you convincingly.

Be careful when looking at AoE attacks on the field. It's all on context clues to determine if it was actual intent to get the team hit by them or if the player was just bad, or some reposition skill went awry or what. Context is critical, so keep an eye on the field instead of just your unit.

Oh, one more tip: It might be tempting to kill yourself as a Shadow when in the sun room, but be aware that this doubles your cooldowns for shadow skills as well as light skills. Good players will know to look at how frequent those came out after someone died, and that makes them look very suspicious...Which is also something you can use to your advantage as a shadow. Just deliberately slow your offense after getting a single kill, and you can potentially pit the light against each other.

One final warning for high tier gameplay: The absolute worst nightmare that plagues everyone who reaches these heights: Matchmaking. The only Lords who Roy has more alts than are Alear (who is pretty new), Leif and Seliph. He has less or equal to the other male Lords. Flop Warriors like Mamui and Chrom d'Reddit have more alts than him so I don't think it's merely a reflection of popularity. I think Maeda just hates him.

Roy beat all of these in CYL one btw, Chrom, Robin, Byleth and Corrin are all in Smash but took years to win CYL (Mamui still hasn't won it and likely never will). Roy from Smash did. Not Roy from Fire Emblem. The Smash players left immediately after CYL1, so it took other Smash characters like Femui years to win. If Roy wasn't in CYL1 somehow, but was added later, he would probably not have won by now.
