Wow 343 apologists are vocal about the fact that whenever /hg/ plays Halo nights, they include Reach but not 4 or Infinite, and they are not happy. Not sure why millennials go apeshit over this section. By this point you've spent half the game fighting Scarabs and you already know how easy they are to take down. They've already stopped being interesting, but now the game wants you to do two Scarab fights back to back. It's boring.

I like the Hornet section, and fighting alongside the Flood was sick, but aside from that it's a B-tier level, maybe a high C.

The best things about the Covenant were the story (really, the stakes got so high, it felt like the climax of the game before the actual climax), the sheer variety of stuff (UNSC, Covenant, Flood, Elite allies, vehicles, and all the stuff you mentioned) crammed into one level. So much happened in this mission.

...But for me, it's The Ark. The Covenant, like you said, is too corridor-like and straight-forward. I don't like getting railroaded (forced) into certain types of gameplay, such as the hornet section. Unless you do some crazy Mint Blitz physics shenanigans, there's no way to bypass the hornet section. You have to get into the vehicle and fly all the way to the next area which gets to be a drag in later plays. Yeah, it was epic the first time, but I like freedom in my gameplay, and the forced Hornet section bogs that down.

The Ark however, gives you so much freedom not just in terms of gameplay choice, but also story-wise and mission-wise. Right away, you're given the opportunity to ambush unsuspecting Covenant the way you want. You can pick them off with the sniper rifle, go in guns blazing, prioritize the plasma turret tower, or take out the Brutes first, maybe even try to run past them, whatever you want. In the next section, you can quickly take out all the targets from a distance using the sniper ammo you saved, or give the ODSTs a couple of snipers and then you go in CQB, or even sneak around past all the enemies. You can use the snipers to take out the hunters covertly or use the Brute shot ammo/grenades to engage them head-on, etc.

The vehicle section? The best in the entire franchise! I don't know how else to put it. It's pure freedom. You can even make your way on foot and ignore the vehicles. And it just ramps up all the way to the Scarab fight. Even that indoor section at the end has a lot of sandbox elements and you have a ton of choice in what to use even in terms of equipment and gameplay style. Grab a Chopper if you want, lol.

Speaking of freedom, I don't think I've ever tried to take a rocket mongoose through the rest of the Ark mission. Wonder if you can take it into the interior where you have to turn on the bridge. Might have to do that later some time.

Now that's the kind of freedom I'm talking about. The Ark gets really finicky with vehicles and even despawns them in certain cases. It REALLY wants you to play it the way the level designers intended. The Arc mission designers are so chill and based in comparison. You can really get creative.

We already know when and how. What we need to know is why. There was no reason to separate to begin with. Split up? The hell was he smoking, def not tobacco. And why did he pick a waterfall to climb up, maybe find a safer spot to climb instead of such a slippery spot where you and your marines could easily fall and get injured from. They should have stuck together, let Chief and a couple Marines go first to soften up enemies, then ambush the rest while the enemy is pre-occupied.

The Brutes already had control of the area so they were bound to run into resistance and get caught with no Chief to help protect them, which endangered Chief, Arbiter, and the mission because now you have to go rescue his squad (who are mostly dead now) and then call a Pelican into a hotzone, endangering even more assets.

Right near at the beginning of the mission when the Phantom overhead passes by and the Marine says to take cover. Johnson splits up with your group and climbs the waterfall. It's funny because they're doing it to not get caught by the Brutes but you instantly get caught by the Brutes in the very next area so there was no point in being stealthy. Even during the actual stealth section you get sighted pretty easily by jackals in the trees so there's no point in sneaking around; it's safer to set up a clear line of engagement so you don't get sandwiched between enemies you missed when you were trying to sneak through. That first battlefield 6 weekend was straight fire! They still have a long way to go before they produce something on the level of battlefield 3 but it took DICE 2 bad company games before they nailed it with 3.
