The weaker even seemingly got hit by a debuff and mine didn't?

Mine started catching up late race, and actually reduced the difference to 1/2L even though the enemy Suzuka's uniques obviously procced and mine did not but I could no longer win.

if you watch a race, you'll notice that horses will change their posture which coincides with positioning within a group. the forward lean (or lack thereof) is a visualization of wit-checks being passed or failed. you fail enough wit-checks and your horse will down-pace. you down-pace enough and your competition passes their wit-checks to up-pace and you're suddenly losing your position.

I have Fuji, and I really love her career for the story, but I guess you're asking about difficulty. You get a choice in her career to either stick to mile races (easy) or go for medium/long (also easy as you don't actually have to win the long race). The only 1st place requirement is the Autumn Tenno Sho, and as it's at the end of her career you should easily have enough stats to overcome her B aptitude in medium races (or just take a single medium spark to get it to A aptitude). A slight downside is that she's a natural Pace Chaser, so you might get blocked in a couple of races. That being said, as she has +20% power growth, in all of my runs she seems to always end up with enough power to overcome the blocking issues. I've run 54 of her careers so far, being a mix of fan and ace runs, and I haven't had to use a single clock in any of them.

Rice has shit growths, unimpactful unique and the double whammy of Kikuka Sho and Tenno Sho Spring which can just instantly end runs if you skimped on stamina. She also has a random early mile race with C aptitude which is perfectly plausible run ender if you don't get speed from parents and your supports avoid speed when you're trying to get their affinities leveled. She's also pace chaser and they love getting randomly blocked.

So her career has most of the major "gotcha" moments of this game where an unlucky run just suddenly ends.
