How SA works in Wilds effectively makes it harder to play against endgame hunts. Really miserable if you are solo.
One thing you can do is ZSD, which alleviates some of the pain points of having to commit to a lengthy charge vs 3-shot combo that decimates hyper armor we were subjected to in Sunbreak endgame and 9*/AT. You can still play the weapon, but just accept that all your damage output will drop significantly once FRS became a liability.
SA seriously needs another pass at balancing MV but we all know that is not happening soon. It is fucked we need another pass to make an already working weapon feel good to play after the OBT feedback, but MH6 team is absolutely coward. They have good ideas, but always overtuned.

early game I saved up a lot of money not upgrading gun until village Khepoo (big upgrade) so I could buy full stack of normal 2 comfortably but only use it sparingly. just don't rush things and use normal 1 most of the time early game and you're fine

I started with 4U and I used to love the game to death but after experiencing the older games in particular the older portable games holy shit does 4U feel like absolute trash to play. The thing is you don't even notice it until you actually learn how to play properly which I didn't learn until I actually played the gen 1/2 games because they actually teach you how to play monster hunter. Not everything is bad about 4U but I genuinely don't want to touch it ever again. It's a game that's at the peak of pushing difficulty but before the player increases in strength that came in GU and world so yeah it's hard but it's also not fun a lot of the time.

that's basically how i feel playing it as my first old gen game. especially once you get to the end of high rank, lots of monsters are moving as fast if not faster than new gen monsters (and they combo just as hard) while you're stuck with shitty old gen movement.

Well that's the biggest issue with 4U I think. You have those faster monsters they added starting in third gen but in 3U you can iframe a lot of moves a monster throws at you (gigginox neck swipe, barioth shoulder check, narga tail swipe obviously, etc) and in GU you get all the new anime stuff to help you but in 4U you move as slow as in FU without anything to counteract all the bullshit monsters got and then there's cramped rooms and ledges on top of that. It's like holy hell throw me a bone. I guess they figured people would be playing multiplayer anyway so it's fine which is the standard way to design things in mainline. I think it's pretty telling the devs said complaints about 4U are what lead to world because it really doesn't feel good to play.

Theoretically having big dick damage is ok but FRS is exceptionally spammable even among the big damage moves. This coupled with how it is just better than everything else in the kit created a TCS effect where it dillutes the identity of the weapons into a gauge burst type like CB. Sure you can ignore it and accept shit dps, but with nerfed morph slash this is the worst version of SA.
In the past we even had viable Axe-centric SA where Sword is mostly used of utility, KO builds that is at least fun (having KO and exhaust on a fast cutting weapon is good). Idk why they feel the need to add another big dick move in each gen.

Well to be fair I played freedom after 4 monhun games so I got used to a lot of jank and learned a lot about how the games function. Ultimately though I would say freedom and FU are the absolute best games for teaching you how to actually play properly so if that's what you're looking for I would dive right in. Like getting frustrated with gravios running all around is what led me to learn you can stop their running by timing your attack to flinch them as they run towards you and the really obvious turning taught me to lure monsters to go where I want them to go.Gypceros flying to the other side of the arena constantly taught me about learning where monsters land so you can use your attack animations to cancel wind pressure and dunk monsters out of the sky as they land. A lot of the monsters having very similar movesets taught me a general style of attacking that helped with almost all future content too. Stuff like plesioth, nargacuga, and shogun helped with practicing iframes. Toppling monsters was something I never did either and now I do it consistently. I really can't recommend the games enough if you want to learn

In solo hunts I usually flash grounded monsters to give myself space to heal or re-buff. Dangerous monsters like Seregios get trapped during enrages in multiplayer hunts because I don't trust randoms or even mhg to slot evade window and roll through his double bleeding swipe. Honestly traps are a vibe based item outside of capture quests. Use them when you feel that you or your team need them.

So maybe I'm just a fucking idiot (likely) but gs doesn't fit me in Wilds when it's fit me ever since F2 and FU. I know it's probably overall "better" because of its more generally useful moveset, but the lack of damage and importance of SCS and TCS over the initial CS was already hard-sell in MHW and the fact it deals such shit damage in Wilds has finally made me drop it.
Yeah, the offset is great. Yes, the near-instant block cancels are amazing. No, I don't think this is GS as it's been for so many games in the past; the lack of damage on the main combo paired with it's still slow moveset has really been highlighted in this crossover with the DPS check and the amount of followups that Omega shits out.
I'm not saying GS is bad, I'm not saying you shouldn't play GS, I'm not even saying GS is /completely/ unrecognizable; I'm just saying that GS has been changed to where it just feels like a slower, larger SnS without the benefits of having a shield or the use of items with the weapon out, and I just can't fucking handle using it anymore because of it.
I moved on to SA with a bit of DB and I can't really say I'm enjoying Wilds in the same way I've enjoyed every other installment so far because of it. Maybe I'll try out LS, Bow and Gunlance?

You get a ridicolous amount of armor and lifesteal. You use immunizer or jerky combined with Speed Recovery 3 and you immediately give a couple non-charged hits to the monster, and you're already safe.
Remember to use the item only when you know you will have at least a small opening after. You are already dealing more damage to begin with, the item is only extra damage and to have a safe net in case you are about to cart.

BTW you can the item while your weapon is out if you assign it to the item wheel.
