It's never too late to post the rules for accepted opinions on /ffg/. The consequences for disobeying the rules for accepted opinions on /ffg/ is the loss of multiple hours of some individual poster's real lives, and if left unchecked this could occur for years upon years, every single day. I'd imagine that some posters might already have lost over 1 year of their life needing to correct the incorrect opinions seen here. So, playing some of XI, in XI they introduce a new girl every expansion who is the main character of the expansion, and you're basically just along for the ride or helping her and she's the main character. It works, because the characters are cool, cute, and likeable.

They seemingly kinda tried to do the same thing with Wuk Lamat, but if backfired. In XIV (You) are the main focus of the story, not some token expansion girl. They said that in Dawntrail (You) were going to take a backseat, and everyone was kinda hopeful because we were told it was like a summer vacation expansion with some sort of competitive "games" thing where some of the Scions are on one side and the rest are on the other. I was on board with this and it seemed neat.

However, the "games" part of Dawntrail lasted like 1 small arc, and Dawntrail quickly became exactly like the other expansion, but much more horribly written, and Wuk Lamat does everything instead of (You). Instead of you accompanying a cool and cute and likeable girl like in XI while you do expansion stuff, you basically get cucked by Wuk Lamat while you watch her play a WoL XIV story. They completely missed the mark.

Wuk Lamat isn't reaaally that bad, like I think Lyse is much worse, HOWEVER, Lyse was basically on the sidelines as a side character and she fucked off for half of her expansion. Wuk Lamat is front and center, she never goes away, and in one expansion she has more voicelines than most of the other Scions have ever had in all the expansions combined. XIV understood this at a point. Past expansions had a character who had a clear focus but the game wasn't completely about them either. All post-EW storylines so far have been "focus on a *single* character whose story is the only one matters* (Zero, Wuk, Sphene) and this is going to bite them in the ass very hard in the long run, especially since none of the remaining writers seem to know basic tenets of character writing either.

Not really. I gave my opinions on this in a post maybe a week ago, so I wont do all of it again. XI is more creative in its cutscenes, but it's still just people emoting at each other most of the time. Like, the biggest difference between the way you acquire bits of story between XIV and XI is that in XI you have to run to the 4 corners of the earth to collect the pieces of the mcguffin, then you take those pieces to someone else, you trade them to that NPC, the NPC says "whoa now, here is the real mcguffin!", then you take the mcguffin to the wherever it is that lets you acquire the next cutscene. To me, this is pretty annoying most of the time, but the more bare bones dialogue and fluff combined with the more creative and dynamic use of camera angles and effects works in its favor does give XI an overall stronger feeling of storytelling due to the cutscenes being more focused and generally more engaging (outside of, like, Shadowbringers for XIV)

I do agree with you on the rest though. The token girl-focused nature of the expansions does have more going for it than just "this is your heroine for the expansion, she's cute!"

Not everything will be good if only by sheer volume, unfortunately. I'd say starting from CoP the general cinematography starts to get a lot better, and ToAU SoL scenes has a few highlights in the scenes with Naja and Luzaf. My point is less cinematography by itself (although I do feel XI cutscene cinematography is consistently better than XIV, the latter always shined more in battle setpieces) but more than XI actually allows you to engage with content. It's not *just* that Dawntrail's plot is shit, but also that you spend your time going from NPC to NPC to talk. Literal hours before you fight your first enemy. It's excessive beyond any reasonable degree. XI has a lot of downtime (esp modern XI where the game is practically automated and all areas that were originally points of friction are pisseasy) but it is time where the player can breathe. Adoulin is the most cutscene heavy expac by far, but you still have to explore and engage with Adoulin's batshit insane systems to actually get to these, where as Wuk actively prevents you from playing the game.

The installation really isn't that bad. It's archaic and retarded, and it takes forever. I don't even understand. I downloaded 13 gigs from Steam, then when I finally launched PlayOnline it spent 2 or 3 hours downloading something else. The registration is shit but there are guides that walk you through it.

Imo, getting the game installed isn't even the worst part. Everything about the game feels like you are constantly fighting its systems. Targeting is so fucking bad it can't even be described unless you experience it for yourself. Nothing at all is ever intuitive. You absolutely need to have the wiki open, and the other wiki because sometimes the "good" wiki doesn't have all the information, and also google because neither one of the wikis are clear or they left out a small detail which someone in the past has encountered before and asked the same question. You absolutely need to download addons. You NEED to used Windower (or Ashita) to play the game.

You think you can just push a button and something will happen? Fuck no. You have to macro anything you ever want to do. Literally anything you do in the game is a chore. What would take 10 minutes in XIV might take 1-2 hours in XI. You have to walk (or mount) EVERYWHERE. Seriously, if you're just doing the MSQ, a good 80% of your time is going to be spent running around the map on your mount or running through a dungeon on foot. Nothing about the game is friendly to the player at all.

Still, it's kinda fun. I don't regret it. I do NOT recommend it by any means. It is NOT for the faint of heart. But if you're still interested, then go for it.

I love it, I really do. It's the only MMO I tried where I got really hooked up.
But you're right, a lot, and I do mean a lot of cutscenes are just character doing the /speak emote. It's a bit of a sore point too, because when I started playing, I thought only the Leveilleurs twins did that "hand on hip, index point to the side" pose, which seemed like a really clever way to show they were from another country entirely, but then I saw other NPCs, not from Sharlaya, do it as well.

It's always a bit annoying that realize that something you like isn't perfect.

It's "better" in XIV, but it came from VIII. If you like playing TT, you can get OP as fuck in VIII by unlocking the GF ability that turns cards into Junctions (i.e. Spells). The enemies scale with you in that game, so grinding is a bad idea, but becoming OP without actually leveling your characters up (i.e. grinding TT) is a good idea if you want an easier time and/or like TT.

I played Tactics only once and it was so long ago that I don't even remember it. Like back when PSX was the current console. I don't personally know what the differences are, but I've seen people say that all charge times for spells and actions and stuff is faster. I've been using Ramza as a Ninja with the Bardsong action and Brawler and it's kinda neat.
