What era do you guys personally consider the worst era of this franchise?

I'll always say it was 2011-2020 for myself. I still remember arguing with so many Sonic fans at the time that the franchise actively disrespecting and making fun of itself was a bad idea and would later be looked back on as pathetic and in spades I have been proven correct. I can't tell how much you're talking about Shadow as a character himself and how much you're being meta towards how others see this franchise.

In the case of the former, it's just because I personally think Shadow is intelligent and wise enough to realize the insanity of repeating such a thing in his life in endless cycles and decide to just walk away from it on at least a decision based level. I keep pointing it out but it's because it's literally part of his character, he's a (near) immortal being that is supposed to be the Ultimate Lifeform and he has pride in that clearly. I'd think at least his own ego would force him to change his outlook on life.

At the time, it all seemed so simple.
Laugh about the bad games and bad decisions because we're going to lock in and start making better decisions and better games.

But then that never happened, and the decisions got worse and more confusing.

Some will argue Aaron and his tactics helped keep the series relevant during the 'dark era', and that's certainly true - if nothing else, it drove engagemen with the franchise through social media.
The problem is that engagement never translated to the actual product. Because they sucked. So ultimately, it was a collossal failure.

I would further narrow the worst part of that era down to 2013-2016, because the surrounding years were at least a bit better, but the games from around that time were really bland and boring, on top of everything you said. I guess the Boom cartoon is kinda nice sometimes (although not what I want from the series), and I like the Sonic Runners soundtrack, but that's not a lot of positives and I think it was the worst period of the series. There is only one way an immortal lifeform that doesn't enjoy life can "just walk away from it", and don't think you properly understand how grim that way happens to be.

It's not pride, it's shame and desperation. Shadow was SUPPOSED to be the ultimate lifeform, yet he failed to be the cure to save Maria, his existence led to more destruction than if he'd never been made, and games like Battle show that he hates his role as a living weapon and that he believes that creatures like him should never have existed in the first place.
He clings to the title of Ultimate Lifeform not because he views himself as better than everyone else, but because it's what he was designed to be, and if he isn't the Ultimate Lifeform, than he's nothing at all.

It's bad in the sense that it's a broken and unpolished mess with poor performance and a ton of boring filler that took up resources from the core experience that everyone wanted to see more of. But the core experience itself, meaning the stages and cutscenes, it's still cool, exciting, emotional, fun, and action-filled. Meanwhile the games they were releasing halfway through the 2010s are entirely 100% boring filler that no one wanted.

Yes, exactly. He sees himself above the common yolk. He genuinely has a prideful sense to himself that he'll always chose better and (ideally) wiser than most people and that includes even Sonic. That kind of ego centric pride drives him even more directly than his devotion to Maria in the games. We're not talking about someone who isn't or at least wouldn't be able to gain enough self-awareness to realize they're being used a pawn by their own emotional programming. Again, this is a character that clearly both Sonic Team and SEGA want to continue using so it'd be easier to expand his character this way within the franchise rather than continuing to use him as an emotional dead end.

Festivals are very hit or miss (mostly miss) because they swap between modes that are either fun (get the most air tricks while racing) or shit (get the most item hits), so you basically have to wait 30 minutes until the next mode if it's a bad one.

This is what makes Maria and her wish so important. Even though Shadow doesn't understand why life is worth living, Maria did, so even if Shadow thinks existence lacks meaning and he'd rather be dead, he endures because he trusts that Maria knew something he didn't, or more realistically, couldn't hope to understand.
