In Archie, Sally Acorn's older brother Elias is a Monoarchist, he does not believe in democracy.. He believes in tradition.
In this continuity, Tails has parents. Tails's parents start a rebellion in the name of democracy. This leads to a battle between Tails's father and Sally's brother. Sally appears late in the arc and forces a comrpromise between democracy and monarchy.

This eventually leads to Ixis Naugus (A villainous wizard) being voted into power, as Tails's mother still has spite for Elias.
Nicole is stuck in exile under these circumstances, and the Freedom Fighters (Sonic's allies in this cnanon) are increasingly handicapped and hampered until Antoine is injured. With their numbers dwindling, Sally and Sonic are under equipped to take on Eggman by themselves, and Eggman turns Sally into a machine. Naugus is sworn into power and cures Bunnie Rabbot of her robotic transformation.

Silver eventually manages to kill Sally as the world is collapsing. Then everything is reset into an alternate universe that is closer to a cross between the games and Sonic Satam.

Democracy killed the Archie universe.

Someone said in an earlier thread Iizuka was able to convince Sega to not release Frontiers in a Sonic Boom state, but it's only half true. Baffling that none of the previous responses had the correct answer. SatAM was popular because it was many people's first introduction to the Sonic series as of whole. Back in the 90s, it wasn't easy for children to play Sonic games. Most people owned a SNES or a gameboy and barely ever owned a Genesis(They need to go over to their friends or uncle house if they wanted a chance to play something like Sonic 2). To them, SatAM is what the Sonic franchise is supposed to be in their eyes. Which is why there was major backlash back in the 2000s when Sega was trying to relaunch the Sonic IP starting with SA1.

The Clean Sweepstakes arc relied on not only characters being stupid, but characters being OOC like Silver and Tangle, and characters not meeting Clutch to recognize him like Amy. All these measures had to be taken to make the story work at the massive expense of the characters.
