>Chapter 3 is after the Nashkel mines right?
>I don't see how you'd handle the mine but get slaughtered off the beaten path
Yeah. 3 out of 5 locations I've discovered after defeating Mulahey so far have enemies that kill my entire party quite easily. Durlag's Tower guards at the entrance kill each one of us in 1-2 hits, so no going there. Just south of Candlekeep near the shore the demon that appears after a lady kisses and kills your guy casts some AoE spell beyond my power to reflect. I got one magic protection scroll from some shady guy, but it's only one, so no help. Some random forest west of Nashkel has 2 ogres and several packs of hobgoblin archers near the entrance bridge. I bought a lot of antidotes against poisoned arrows, that helped, but my party still ends up half dead once the bridge is clear, and that's without triggering a bandit with 6 more archers a little to the east and going further.
>The letters you found in the mines should tell you what to do
Hell, you're right. I must've thought the letter was yet another bounty notice. I store them all inside a chest, thankfully, so now I know that I have to go to Feldepost's Inn in Beregost. Thanks for the advice.
>>542767639
Level 4-5? It wasn't that difficult. I didn't even know that temples sold items when I cleared the mines (I only remember reading about resurrection and item identification from the manual), so I strictly went off the items I found along the way, and still had some unused consumables left. Poison spiders and a single asshole archer with enchanted arrows gave me the most trouble, the rest was manageable. I didn't change the difficulty and I'm not rushing the game, this is my first playthrough. Gnoll keep is clear, Dynaheir's in my party.

As far as veering off the path I think you've just gotten unlucky. You're right about "Level 4-5?" my mistake, it should be 3-4. I was thinking you were saying you finished the mines and are just now turning level 3, which seemed very early to me.

Make sure you're doing a lot of ranged, it's king in BG1 especially the early levels. CC spells like Sleep are amazing as well.

>Things got strangely tough for what I've heard was one of the more accessible CRPGs
It's still pretty unforgiving at these very early levels when a stray crit can end you.
There's a number of quests people give between Beregost and the Friendly Arm Inn that can give some good XP. Make sure you're equipped decently too. If you go north of the Friendly Arm, there's ankhegs and their shells are very valuable (but very heavy too). Additionally, you can bring them to the guy in Beregost and he'll offer to make armor out of them.
My guess is that your AC is generally lower than it could be, but without seeing your game and how you play it's hard to tell. But I think the early levels are the hardest, in how fragile you are.

It is accessible in that it has a very user friendly interface and controls. It is brutal in terms of stomping your low level characters though. It is entirely normal that you are dying that much. Not doing so requires experience and knowledge you have to gain over a couple playthroughs.
The cool thing about the game is that once you do master it, you can come up with your own route through the game and easily play it ironman without ever needing to reload.

Yeah, but there's also exclusive feedback forms for alpha testers where you can give your opinion. More than just bugfixing. I did it for wrath and trader and I'll do it for heresy too. It's just kind of fun to play a little early, see it change over the course of development, and be a part of giving feedback and the like. I did it for bg3 as well. Development is interesting to me though, I don't necessarily recomend doing it. In fact, waiting to play the release means you won't be spoiled on the plot and stuff from an incomplete version. So it's just up to you.

>Make sure you're doing a lot of ranged, it's king in BG1 especially the early levels. CC spells like Sleep are amazing as well.
Hmm, good to know. Right now only Imoen (bow) and Dynaheir (sling) participate in ranged combat. I've given Minsc a crossbow just in case, but never equipped it. I'll test it in the next battle then. None of my mages know Sleep IIRC, I only have a single scroll for it. I'm saving it for someone especially mean (I've been thinking about using it on the shore demon).
>There's a number of quests people give between Beregost and the Friendly Arm Inn
I had to turn down two because Xzar and Montaron kept bugging me about the mine. Are non-companion side quests timed, usually? I rejected them because I assumed they were.
I'll see what's north of Friendly Arm, haven't seen no "ankhegs" yet.

I'm struggling to figure out how you cleared the gnoll keep and the mines ending in level 1 and 2... Really doesn't make sense to me but ok I'm not about to do the math.
Most of the difficulty complaints people have in the early game is bumrushing the mine too quickly and not being able to beat it, so then being advised to sidequest around until level 3-4. So apparently you bumrushed the mine with ease but are now having trouble with the sidequests.... Really not sure what to say about that I guess.

>Minsc
I'd give him a composite bow because he has high strength, iirc? It's free to switch weapons, so really everyone should start ranged. If the enemy has range then yes you want to close in with melee
I would memorize Sleep instead of use it as a scroll (hopefully you understand that you can copy scrolls to your spellbook? if not, that may be a source of problems for you)

>I had to turn down two because Xzar and Montaron kept bugging me about the mine

If you dont mind making your own maps then you cant go wrong with any Wizardry other than 4. They have a bunch of ports and remakes if you dont want to play with wireframe graphics. Wizardry 1 has a very new remake on Steam. For Wizardry 8 you won't have to map but it is a bit different from the other games.

There's also Wizardry: Tale of the Forsaken Land on PS2 thats very good.

As for modern Wizardry clones, all the good ones are coming from Japan. Etrian Odyssey 1-5, SMT Strange Journey, Undernauts, all great games

I cleared Gnoll Stronghold at levels 2-3, some time after the mine. Now you got me curious what's so weird about clearing the mine at levels 1-2.
>apparently you bumrushed the mine with ease but are now having trouble with the sidequests
Well I wouldn't say with ease. I died to spiders and a specific archer several times, and left Xzar's corpse in the mine. I didn't know what to do with Mulahey and his minions at first, but he conveniently stood up in the entrance to the room where Xan was, blocking the way to all his minions. That's how I managed to defeat them all. Finished him first, and then dealt with the others, healed and ready. Slimes near the end caught me off guard with their ranged attack, but their hit chance is pretty low, so everyone dodged most of them on second try.
You're right that I rushed there, I didn't want Xzar and Montaron to go. Though I already replaced them both, I didn't know the game would throw this many companions at me.
Side quests have been fine so far. It's the areas on the map that I go to on my own accord that scream "YOU SHALL NOT PASS". I did that because I didn't read the one letter that told me where to go though, so that's solved (for now).
>I'd give him a composite bow

I wonder if most of the fans here and elsewhere actually just played the games as visual novels on the easiest difficulty while also being 15-25 years old when they played it originally and/or without much experience with previous RPGs such as from Dragon Age, KotOR, Mass Effect and so on.

I'm not saying they're bad, but there's also just not enough there without headcanoning and projecting on virtually every popular character like Heinrix or Yrliet.

>My cleric and mage don't have it. And yes, I figured you can manage spells in priest scrolls and mage books.
I'm still worried that you're not getting it. If you have a mage and you have a scroll that they don't have in their spellbook, you can right-click on that scroll and (attempt to) write it to your spellbook. There is a difficulty setting to always succeed, which I put on, because I personally think it's a stupid mechanic to fail and lose the scroll.
Clerics get all their spells right away as you can see in the spellbook, but mages have to write spells from scrolls.
>I just realized I fucked my entire character idea

I'm glad you understand the spellbook now. Yes, write scrolls to your spellbook is how mages get new spells. Also you will be limited by your INT as to how many spells can fit on each level of your spellbook, just to be aware. So for instance, if you have the full number of spells written for level 1, and you come across a level 1 scroll, it will display as if you already have it written (as in you can't write it.. the green outline or whatever, I don't remember). A potion of genius changes this, and your chance of success at writing the spell... but again I think this is a pretty shit mechanic and set it to auto-succeed.
I can't answer for some non-EE variant and breakage, but if I were in your shoes I would give it a shot and feel perfectly fine about it, since you had an intention that was then misguided, but in the end it only matters to you anyhow.
Also I don't understand this anti-EE nonsense, it's ridiculous to me as I see it as strictly an upgrade, but some very loud retards come out shaking their fist and shitting their pants about it so I won't bother pursuing it, as long as you're having fun (though I wonder about this since you seem inclined to just cruise through quickly)

Anyhow, writing spells and visiting the Beregost smith guy should help with the difficulty.

Shadowrun: Hong Kong question, am I advancing anything by taking rests when I feel like my character would?
I'm trying to treat urgent quests as urgent even if they aren't, but also it doesn't feel right to me to do more than like 2 missions between rests.

Also holy hell does this game have a fuckton of writing. I'm not opposed at all, just really wasn't expecting that at all. Another interesting fact, I've completely avoided combat in 2 of my 3 missions so far. Also was expecting a much more combat-heavy game for some reason.

Most of the reading is completely optional just having conversations with people, with all of your companions having an on-going kind of long conversation ending in a "let's pick this up later" type thing. But I think a person could just skip all that, though it's clearly where a ton of the efforts went in the game so I think maybe it's just not the right game for someone who isn't down for quite a lot of reading.

Hmm, so INT is still important. I'll see how many spell slots 10 INT will give me. If things look bad, I might shave off a point or two off STR. Assuming the save editor works, of course.
The strongest scrolls will stay in my possession for now. Dynaheir is lawful good while I'm lawful evil, so I'm not sure if I'll keep her for long (I want an evil/neutral party). Like her otherwise.
>I would give it a shot and feel perfectly fine about it

I see why you're saying that, but no. I rushed to Nashkel Mines and turned away quests to avoid losing my companions. I missed the letter because I've had 3 bounty notices on me and mixed up which ones I've read and which ones I didn't. I didn't look for the composite bow because I didn't know it's good, and I avoided the smith in general after I saw the ridiculous (for my level) pricing, thinking "I'll come here later". ehhhhhh this question always feels like it's in bad faith due to a certain shitposter here. But in case you're actually new and just asking for real,

To give you an actual answer, 40k isn't really about good vs evil, it's about the lengths humanity goes to survive. It's a story about how context changes you/changes a society, and the context humanity finds itself in is an extremely hostile galaxy where everyone wants them dead, so they go to extremes just to survive. That's the short version of 40k in general. It's not like LotR where there's a bad guy who must be slain by the good guys, it's just the story of survival, with no real good guys, and many bad guys.

The tau are often said to be the closest thing to a "good guy", but this is relatively speaking. They still use pheremones to make the vespids evolve in ways that makes them more subservient, they still treat gue'vesa as second class citizens in many planets, and they still ultimately will eradicate anyone who doesn't join them. But the reason they are cited as the good guys is because many factions don't even give you a chance to join, they just skip to the eradicating.

There are still good individuals within the imperium, like Cain. There are some stories about normal average dudes who are just trying to be reasonable, but they're in a galaxy that chews up reasonable people. Your average random citizen who just toils in the field to produce his state mandated work quota also isn't a "bad guy". The average random PDF soldier who defends his home from orks and deldar and shit isn't a "bad guy". So it just depends on what kind of story you're looking for.

Doesn't matter that there may have been some talking points in 2014 you were reminded of, crpgs fill the same niche they always have even if the noise in and around them tries to suggest otherwise. This thread is proof of that.

You have to be invested into the settings they're about usually.

The Dragonlance novels are generally pretty decent as standalone fantasy fiction, especially the original Raistlin ones.

For Forgotten Realms stick to anything before 4e, the whole setting goes to shit around then. Don't bother with the video game tie ins, they're garbage, but the Erevis Cale series, some of the Driz'zt books, Spine of the World spinoff story especially, and the Twilight Giants trilogy are quite good.

Return of the Archwizards is a good trilogy thats a little ruined by the fact the setting was entirely turned to shit later. But if you are interested in running campaigns set around the time of the Baldur's Gate and Neverwinter Nights games, or just want more info one the big events that occur right after those series, its a good set of books.

If you want a thinly veiled Ayn Rand adaptation, the Watercourse trilogy turns out pretty decent.

Beyond that there's assorted decent novels that you can dig up if you really like the setting and don't mind digging.

The problem with Pathfinder novels is the setting is worse than the Forgotten Realms and the overlap with autistic nerds in this hobby means that half the reason to read shared-world fiction is to learn about the setting.

There's no reason to invest time and energy in learning about a dogshit setting thats worse than a GM just homebrewing his own.

Just read the talents and skills carefully before levelling up. The recommended ones are not always the best. Try different things and don't be afraid to respec any of your characters by talking to the High Factotum character on the bridge and asking for training.
Early fights such as the one at the end of the intro, and one against some gang hoodlums, are much tougher than later ones because you're underpowered. Ship combat is surprisingly hard so don't be afraid to avoid harder fights until your ship is levelled up a bit.
Also, you may need to take the talent Basic Training: Medicae or Field Medic (from memory ) to even use medkits, regardless of your Medicae stat, so do that early if you find you can't use medkits

pretty badly botched this mission, I like how this other group we just ran into calls me out on it

Also fuck the hacking minigame. I sort of get it now but I think I'll need to invest in some programs and ESPs for Izzy. Actually the puzzle aspect of breaking those seals is kind of alright, but I still don't think it should be up to player skill. It's Izzy on the deck, not me the player. I'm pretty good at that kind of shit so it's fine, but I'm philosophically opposed I guess.

this lady looks like goofy but I really like the idea of making friends with another crew, I hope they turn up more.
Though we're also both here for the same laser, so... might come to violence. Though it sounds like we're planning to both leave due to heightened security on its way.

Honestly not sure if it was predetermined that we'd botch the mission or not, I mean this would be a whole branch that most CRPGs wouldn't bother with as a separate possibility. Well if it was predetermined, they did a good job of making it feel really natural.
