Had a short session just now and the connection feels much better than it did a few days ago which could be due to less strain on the servers or they've done some back end work to make it better. Bullets are actually landing unlike they have before since launch where they'd just phase through people at point blank ranges.

But yeah it fires a dart that functions as painting a target on whatever it hits, meaning you can insta-tag tanks for your engineers and other vehicles to rain hell on. You're right that they should just be one category (even 2042 figured that out, how the fuck is this game dumber than 2042?), but a rifle can still be a carbine even if there's no long version, and it doesn't matter what they're chambered in. The game definitely doesn't need a full power category when there are only like four guns that'd fit in it across both rifles and carbines.

just spent an hour being an autismo in the firing range with the weapons I have unlocked. holy shit I was sleeping on the SMG's I think. These things are absolute LASER beams. The MP5 has only slightly worse damage falloff within 100 yards than the M4 but it has astoundingly better recoil, I can just hold down M1. The assault rifles also have better damage breakpoints than the M4 and feel like they have slightly better spread and recoil. why does everyone think the M4 is good?? it's actually a piece of shit compared to these other weapons. Even the M277 is a better choice since you get a 4 shot kill at any range within 100 yards.

The modern definition of carbine is based on length. If a gun is short it's a carbine. The M4 is the carbine version of the M16 because it's shorter even though they're in the same cartridge. The G36C is the carbine version of the G36 because it's shorter even though they're in the same cartridge. And the exact same thing applies to the 13 inch barrel HK417 compared to the 16.5 inch one.
The definition of carbines as rifles that fire weaker cartridges than usual is really outdated. Nobody uses that definition anymore. Or maybe they do, but you need to at least accept the other definition based on length.

The 1.75x optic that I think is supposed to be an Aimpoint T2 has a dot that's so oversized it obscures targets, others are so dim you can't see them. The default recon rifle scope has the same fuckhuge dot issue. The not-EOTech reticle is barely visible and looks like it was painted on with acrylic paint. It makes absolutely no sense how quickly 2 braindead engineers can pop a tank without being punished by simply headglitching. Even worse, try any of the points close to a tall building (many of them), and they'll get bonus damage for hitting the top armor while taking even less risk, that's not even mentioning the kamikaze 9 year olds with c4 gliding down which honestly I respect a bit more. It wouldn't be bad honestly if the vehicle repair points weren't so insanely slow, because the reality is most people on your team seem to be playing engineer ONLY to abuse said imbalance instead of actually playing around the armor on team. Oh, and the cherry on top, the AT mines basically one shot an IFV, you get 3 or 4 on spawn, and they persist after death. So you can just take a little vacation in tahiti (support's ammo bag) and just play the game like bomberman since all you have to do to rack up massive xp is just plant mines on the major toll roads while everyone is busy rotating to other pointTM.
Probably the best "armor" experience in the game I can recommend is playing the Cheetah/Mobile AA. It's one of the only things that lets you somewhat ignore the broken anti-armor loadouts and yeet around on the edge of the map doing donuts. All of this while not having to worry about any gary sue mine spam because you're literally in fucking tim buck fucking two where the utterly carried AT fags will never spend the time to go to.

The reload times for the shorter belts / boxes / mags for the LMGs must be bugged. This one drops the reload from ~7.5s to ~1.5s

and on some of the others with short belts it supposedly drops the reload speed to 0.5s, if the weapon stats in the menu are to be believed

as far as I can tell it only marginally beats AR's in hipfire and it only marginally beats SMG's in damage falloff. the spread and recoil on carbines is so high though that in a mid range fight SMG's STILL beat carbines, and AR's have better damage falloff and better recoil / spread.
it seems to me like the weaknesses of SMG's / AR's are so minimal compared to how badly they beat carbines at the things they are better at. so with all class weapons they are nearly pointless.

EoD bot is good with messing around with people, doing objectives, repairing vehicles without exposing yourself, removing the threat of mines, and annoying the hell out of people. I can understand not switching calibers since not that many guns support that, but the barrels are completely fucked. If they're going to split rifles and carbines into different categories then they shouldn't allow me to put carbine length barrels on the rifles. It's possible for the HK417 to have better ADS time and worse dropoff than the G3 because it's a carbine even though I can set up the G3 to be shorter. It's so stupid.

Modern carbines are designed for backline soldiers, guys who repair and/or drive tanks and the such. Guys who aren't expected to ever actually use their gun, but being that they are soldiers it is important they have capable weapons should the need arise. As such they are issued smaller, handyier guns that do not get in the way of other tasks.

Historically, carbines were a Calvary thing, they wanted smaller guns that were easier to reload and handle while on horseback.

If you want a reason for them to be in video games, plenty of spec ops in modern militaries and police like carbines because they are short and easier to use indoors.
