Evan had a million more red flags than Ian did before she even got hired and yet this place cheered when she became head writer. I find it funny how it took less than 2 years for her to just give up writing anything coherent entirely and there are people on here who still defend her or act like they're surprised the Sonic fan who has barely played any Sonic games and openly admits that she headcanons several characters that are entirely different from their game depictions sucks at writing Sonic stories.

What ere Evan's flaws as a writer? I think Ian's have been discussed enough. In his case his biggest flaw isn't really a matter of skill but a matter of preference. He likes his references, he likes his particular characterizations. He is absolutely capable of doing otherwise, he doesn't want to.

Evan can't keep villains evil. She's not good at non-SoL stories. When she creates a character, a high priority to her is inclusion. Characters talk more emotionally, mostly she is allowed to write like that. She completely mischaracterized Silver for years and didn't even realize it until recently. She admitted she doesn't really plan out a character or story ad just writes as she goes.

It is actually pretty difficult to judge his writing since he only wrote Satam and some of Underground. His Sonic characterization is infamously off but he gets some very specific things right. I wonder if Sonic's character profile was actually more detailed than we once thought. I wonder how he would have written this show if he was given a more modern and fleshed out Sonic to work with.
His style is as 90s as it gets. The characters are rough but not violent. They're cheesy but not even aware of it. It's cute.

He is very good at articulating exactly, precisely what he means. This obviously has its drawbacks but it means there is a strong sense of clarity in what he's trying to tell you. It's a useful skill to have. He also DID do a pretty decent job of cleaning up Archie's storylines and reworking them into a more entertaining narrative. Things that just seemed like chaotic schizophrenic writing before felt more like the setup for something better later

Both she and Ian both have an issue with preference and with general writing skill. Ian's issue is an obsession with nostalgia, subversion, and a massive overarching story that turns whatever he's writing into a borderline parody that almost seems as if it's mocking itself, which he does in place of any sort of consistent character writing or consistent story. In other words, he comes up with some genius subversive story regardless of if it works for the characters, and then he changes characterizations on a whim in order to make it function. A prime example was with the way the Metal Virus and Surge attempted to decontextualize Sonic both as a character and as a franchise.

Evan on the other hand is WAY more simple than Ian, every thing she does she only does because she feels like it would be cool or cute in the moment and then doesn't put any more thought into it. She redeems villains because she thinks it's sweet and wholesome, she does ship teasing because she thinks it's cute, she focuses on drama and trauma more than action because that's what she likes to read about, and she writes characters far softer because that's just what she likes. Her way of writing is so in the moment that her plots devolve into nonsense where she forgets important information and screws up the set up so badly that the only way to make things sort of work is if she has everyone act stupid so that it at least ends up sort of like a normal resolution.
There's no spite or ulterior motive to Evan, she just thought Sonic was closer to how she wanted it to be and was genuinely surprised she was wrong.

If you've followed Evan for as long as I have you'll know that this is actually true. She intended to redeem Scourge in GOTF. GOTF was planned to have an overwhelmingly happy ending where everyone wins, every dead character comes back to life and everyone's personal dreams come true becuase it's so nice.
I don't mean to bash her for this but you can tell she is sort of driven by a level of empathy for the characters that is a tad excessive. She wants them to become nice and then nice things to happen to them because they deserve to have nice things happen after all they've been through.

The issue with this is that Evan's already made it clear about what she wants to write, and that kind of desire is what unconsciously seeps into someone's work even if they're trying not to.
Characters will try talking out their problems more often, villains will be more relatable victims instead of imposing threats, low stakes SoL and melodrama takes the lead instead of action and adventure. Even if she's told what to do and what not to do, it's just not that simple.

Evan's biggest flaws are that she clearly has no idea how to connect different plot lines together and instead of trying to string each plot point along in a sensible manner she would rather turn literally every character involved into a complete retard and bend characters to their literal breaking point (like what she did to Whisper and Lanolin) just to keep the narrative going along even when it doesn't make sense.

Everything that happened in the Clean Sweepstakes arc could have been resolved immediately had:
A; Jewel paid even the slightest amount of attention of what was going on around her.
B; Silver's telekinesis worked how it odes in the games.
C; Whisper told Lanolin to remove Duo's gloves.
D; Tangle didn't actively get in the way of everything
or E; Surge and Kit betrayed Clutch which they were going to do anyway.

More often than not you can tell what she's TRYING to write down and go for in the narrative but more often than not every single character involved is going to be so warped by what happens within the plot that the entire narrative should either be scrapped or rewritten entirely.

Also as the other anons have pointed out several times now, Evan literally does not understand or know how to write multiple characters for this franchise and she has very little to no understanding on how to write an action/adventure story that isn't meant for tween and teenage girls. It's not just the fact that her writing skills are extremely poor and that she puts no thought into her plots but she also just straight up can not and debatably even does not want to write for franchise meant for boys. Maekawa was able to write stories like that, sometimes. The main plot of SA2 was a fairly simple "bad guy explodes and the good guys save the day" plot from a surface level perspective, but if you decide to pay attention (optional) you'll find it goes way deeper than most shallow kids stories. I think that's what Sonic should be doing with its storytelling.

It was the same way with the worldbuilding in Sonic as well. All the games are episodic and you could basically pick up any game at any time and be completely fine, but if you paid attention you could tell that these all took place in a certain order in a living world. IDW Sonic lost all it's quality control and became a front for sloppily pushing agendas rather than telling stories about Sonic and friends for kids primarily.
