Just look up any normie's thoughts/review on Sonic x Shadow Generations. They completely ignore Classic Sonic and focus on Modern Sonic or Shadow Generations. Superstars also didn't get much attention, SEGA called it a failure, and no one seems to care about Mania anymore at this point.

Realistically if the 2000s never happened, Sonic would be around the same level of popularity as Chibi-Robo. He'll be fondly remembered for being a great series that was left dormat due to the existence of Puyo Puyo, Yakuza, and Phantasy Star. But then gets revived in the 2010s due to the retro boom scene. Which may seem exciting as first, the Sonic fanbase(Which is extremely niche due to later generations never growing up with Sonic) will complain about how they're not good at all when compared to the originals and they'll sell poorly worldwide. Which leads to Sega killing the Sonic series for good as they go back to focusing on their three popular IPs.

The problem with IDW isn't that it's too western, it's that it's trying way too hard to ape Japanese storytelling and it fucking sucks at it. You've got these writers who are clearly weebs trying to do anime-style plotlines, Japanese character dynamics, and that slow-burn shonen bullshit, but they don't understand how to make it work. They're not Japanese, they can't naturally write that style, and it shows in every arc that drags on for 20 issues with no payoff.

Western Sonic should lean snappy writing actual humor instead of trying to be "deep and dramatic" because it is clearly failing at that. The games originally had Western design philosophies baked into Sonic's DNA from the start. He was made to compete in Western markets with attitude and speed and coolness that resonated here.

But IDW? It's stuck in this weird middle ground where it's written by western writers who want to be Japanese, can't communicate properly with Sonic Team, and we end up with this bastardized product that pleases nobody. It's not authentically western and it's a shit imitation of Japanese storytelling.

OC / Game concept time!

Her name is Amirah. Though would go by Mira regularly to not freak people out.
She is there to sell a small gameplay gimmick in a Sonic game. That being a replay function.
She is a film maker who decides to document an encounter of Team Sonic vs Team Eggman.

The entire game is told through the documentary she makes, with the gameplay being used as B-Roll footage that you later see being used in the documentary (via the replay function mentioned earlier). As such while she may me more aligned with Sonic and friends she is closer to being a neutral character as she does get interviews with Eggman and Sage throughout the game.

Her Wisp companion who she calls Fizzy serves as her camera operator.

Let me know if she is actually drawn in the current human style.

Maekawa completely ignored Tails' arc from the first adventure game. I had been noticing for a while that things had been changing in IDW for a while starting with the last arc. Changing the art and colors to make it more pleasant and on model rather than the ugly bulbous 3d model looking vomit it used to be. They started trying to write the main game characters better, including Sonic. He's the least annoying he's been of any idw arc in the most recent stuff. Not perfect or great, but it's better. Amy benefited the most.
They killed the restoration, one of the biggest criticisms of IDW. Now they're going out of their way to make the characters go to more unique places. Now they're going to change the story formular and we're moving past Frontiers, something people said was never going to happen.
Now with the news of Barnes intentions, it's pretty obvious why these changes are occurring.
The only thing thats still having major problems in IDW is it's original characters. Everything in the past 10 issues, the worst parts have consistently been Whisper and Tangle and Lanolin as well as Clutch and Mimic. 79 was so bad idwfags hated it too, but will the new direction of idw make Whisper and Tangle become more worthwhile characters now? Mimic is dead so will they make these characters more fun and less melodramatic? I wonder where things will go from here and I wonder how idwfags feel about the incoming shift

I don't know if you're just an agendafag, but the restoration made the world more boring because it acted as a home base for sonic and the comic was stuck telling stories in it's area. GUN works because it's a separate entity we happen to see part of the world and only occasionally works with sonic and his friends or even against.
Funnily enough, the way the restoration is done now post blowing up the HQ does fit it into the world better. Having little mini offices around the world does way more for world building while also not keeping sonic stuck in one location. And it keeps the stories from focusing only on it, it's just a side organization that exists now. Like GUN
