Kinda the best it's ever been kinda the worst it's ever been.
Game feels super alive right now and the best parts about gw2 (open world metas, build craft, making legendaries, etc) are at their best they've ever been.
But the new content and story every since they swapped to mini xpac's hasn't been on par with the previous stuff.

That being said one of the biggest advantages of GW2's progression system is the game basically never gets worse because the best content is always there. It's not like WoW where if the current patch sucks there's no point to play.

Also don't listen to that other anon about 5v5, if you are new I wouldn't try it until you have a really firm understanding of your class because it plays way different then PvE. Go for a trinket, they're always useful and you can't stat swap them like you can Ascended weapons/armour.
If all professions you're leaning towards are of the same weight class (e.g. medium) then you could go for armour.
If you want to make a weapon, then spear and sword are used by every profession (some expansions are required), then staff (everyone but engi), axe and pistol (7 professions), dagger/sceptre/greatsword/hammer (6), mace/shield/torch (5) and then there's the very niche ones.
In general, two-handed are probably better than the others since they allow you to freely swap two upgrades.

The writing is also somewhat average, which is honestly an achievement for this game.

You don't really get a lot of new features to play with, BUT you get a bunch of strike missions that are easier raids, and the few maps you get are pretty good. The season was rushed to push out End of Dragons in time for the 10th anniversary, so the second half is a shitshow.
The plot is essentially a Rytlock humiliation ritual so you'll enjoy it if you hate him I guess, also one of the elder dragons is now a tranny for unknown reasons. Regardless, some missions have legitimately good writing.

Like in the LS4, you get some legy weapons and some raids. Maps are cool, if mostly small and gimmicky, and you can easily get a lot of ascended trinkets, some of them can even have their stats reset.

The Icebrood Saga was the writers coping with their children betraying them and voting Troomp, End of Dragons was likely the same writers finding out that their parents also voted Cheeto Man.
Both expansions after End of Dragons are tamer in that regard: Obscure introduces the Avengers who are fighting off an invasion but it's rushed to hell and back and you barely get any plot after the halfway point, Janthir establishes the United Nations who send you to investigate a titan threat and it's not as rushed as Obscure but has barely any plot regardless.

You still get improved stuff if you train both masteries, like you wall jump higher and shit. The combat launch is pretty nice if you need to escape an encounter quickly, and the fireball is great for tagging open world events.

I hate how they wasted the titans just like that: you get the slow reveal and then the launch story ends with a third, stronger one talking you into a retreat because both parties are exhausted.

I hate how 50% of any difficulty with Anet's jumping puzzle design philosophy is getting caught on tiny ledges and shit and then another 30% from your camera being obstructed by terrain or foliage.
I swear, if platforms were just flat platforms, there's be no trouble at all, but everything has realistic topographical collision or whatever and whoops, you got caught on a 0.001 inch height difference in terrain while moving towards the ledge and now your jump is slightly too short.

They're only connected in the most broad sense, like SotO introduces Wizards and so there are Wizards who show up in JW without a lot of fanfare, a few characters will reference the enemies you fight in SotO but it's basically just a couple throwaway lines like "Man, Kryptis, that's crazy, am I right?"

VoE's only references to JW are likely going to be the existence of the Tyrian Alliance (which happens in the first 20 minutes of JW anyway) and that you get a new sidekick NPC (it's basically LW1 Braham with less angst and he's a bear)

They had announced these mini expansions as one-off stories but, as it turns out, Janthir Wilds assumes you've at least played the White Mantle part of the LS3 and is a direct sequel to SotO, including expanding A LOT on a couple of characters from that expac.
