Almost every mainline Classic Sonic game ends with Eggman running away after his final or next to final machine blows up, SA1 subverts that. Its not a bad thing, but it is a contradictory creative decision in service of a cool gameplay moment.

Sparky's latest post about Tails and Amy was more or less a total capitulation to my view of the characters, he just uses a different labelling system than I do "kid Sonic" and "Girl Sonic" instead of "Male Amy" and "Girl Tails". It's the same fundamental understanding of them as the same archetype but separated by gender and one being more in touch with passion and emotions and the other being more technically inclined and reserved. Sparky and I have the exact same understanding of these characters, he's just pissed off at the fact that I devils advocated against Amy's early game depictions as poorly written and requiring retcons and headcanons to course correct. He's upset that I called him out on wanting to vault Cream. He fears that my understanding of the series rivals his own.
The only ways in which we seriously differ is that he's intent on viewing Tails as strictly a 'little brother' and denying the possibility of any pairing between Sonic and Tails despite the characters' creators humoring such a pairing.

They just gotta be organized and balanced correctly, so it makes sense. The "core cast" should be Sonic and his most immediate connections that are each defined by him in particular, in different ways. Cream not only has no direct link back to him, but any link she DOES have combined with her own core concept means that she overlaps with Tails, and Amy.

Cream on Team Rose with Amy is natural. Cream with Amy on Team Sonic does not work right because at least one of them will be written terribly, because there should only be one girl there whose the embodiment of sweetness or whatever. Amy and Cream can both be sugary sweet and cute on the "Team Rose" team where Amy is the main character. But when Amy is a side character to Sonic, an extension of Amy expanding that theme does not balance right, especially when the other half of Cream is being another Tails. So then, Cream is not only another cute girl, but another cute "kid sibling" who can basically do what Tails does aside from tech stuff. Which itself means if you wanna distinguish Tails and Cream, then you'd hyperfocus on Tails' intelligence and downplay the actual core of his personality and what he does.

Cream fits best on Team Rose where Amy is the lead character and Cream is her sidekick. Or, if Cream is leading her own story centered around herself in general. Just having her as one of the main cast on Team Sonic alongside the core 4 does not balance correctly.

The same applies to Rouge, she should not be on "Team Sonic" either at all.

I would not have an important character in my project be "Sundae" as a major character if I didn't like Cream.

What I always say is that Cream does not fit in the Core4.

Tails is Kid-Sonic. Amy is Girl-Sonic. Knuckles is Anti-Sonic. The most logical additions are Blaze and even Jet, who are also defined by Sonic.

Cream is not defined by Sonic. Cream is Amy's equivalent to Tails. That puts her outside of that core circle. She branches out, like Rouge.

Sonic -> Amy -> Cream
Sonic -> Knuckles -> Rouge

Cream and Rouge do not fit in the core 4, as part of the main cast, by this reason.

Dream Team is fine, because it balances it as Team Sonic (STK) and Team Rose ("Proto" Team Rose, at least). I honestly love the idea of Amy, Cream and Rouge being "Team Rose". Plus Big, he has to be there too, but that's beside the point.

But the main point with this is how these characters should be organized. I have my own large cast of characters in my project very systematically organized in accordance to who they should primarily be aligned with. In like, two separate ways.

Forcing Cream to be a core character on the same level as Tails and Amy directly overlaps with, and thus conflicts with, Tails and Amy. Because with the focus on SONIC himself, having Amy, Tails and Cream all together WILL cause overlap because Cream is "Amy's Tails". She follows Amy's themes of being the cute sweet girl, as a kid sibling sidekick like Tails with a similar personality to him. It's a different story from Cream being on Amy's team away from Sonic.

It's not like Tails became Nightwing so Cream be a new younger Robin. Because we ALL know Tails has NOT reached that level yet, himself. There's at least one guy here who'd argue that Cream is better than Tails in that regard, or something like that.

Tails and Cream are the same character role for Sonic & Amy. So having both together will cause overlap, if that's not properly balanced. If Cream was more different from Tails, it'd be fine. But my one criticism of Cream on her own is that she's just too much of what you'd expect "Amy's Tails" to be like, to the point that she's largely more like "Girl Tails" than even Amy is as "Girl Sonic".

The most obvious thing about Cream is that she's a little girl whose very sweet. The other sides of her, like being so strictly disciplined with her politeness and her more calm and collected mindset in-contrast to Amy's hyper-enthusiasm are more subtle traits that aren't as noticed. I would suggest that Cream should be even "cooler" or "colder" to contrast both Amy and Tails, but that's impossible now that Sage exists to literally be that.

It's easy to say:
Tails = Smart Guy
Amy = Heart
Knuckles = Big Guy

But the truth of the Five Man Band thing is that "The Smart Guy" and "The Big Guy" do not have any actual link to "The Leader". The Heart and the Lancer typically do, because their roles are personality/character-focused. But the Smart one and the Big one only exist to be smart and strong, which often ends up overshadowing any personality they'd otherwise have.

Look at what happens to Tails and Knuckles. Tails is "The Smart Guy" so 99% of his character sometimes is just the brain dumping all the exposition. Knuckles is "The Big Guy", so its easy for any writing trap of focusing purely on being a meat head tough guy like what happened with Boom, or whatever else.

It's why I specify their roles as Kid-Sonic and Anti-Sonic. Because yes, Tails has an IQ of 400 and Knuckles IS AS STRONG AS SAITAMA, ANYTHING LESS IS -WRONG-. But if you focus purely on those abilities as their defining character trait, you easily lose sight of who they are.

The Lancer alone is "The Hero's Foil". Anyone designed to be "Sonic's Blank" could be argued to fill that space in some way, because naturally they will contrast Sonic. Blaze, in this regard, is -the- Lancer character because her entire thing as "Nega-Sonic" is to be a perfect Foil. But the reality is that Tails, Amy and Knuckles are all designed to pair with Sonic in distinct ways, and Blaze just combines all three into one.

It took me years to realize, but the Classic dimension existing doesn't mean the classics don't happen in both dimensions. That issue is exclusive to two worlds. And at this point I suspect what Sonic Team was actually going for was three worlds, disregarding the old one from the original games. See Unleashed and Forces having two completely different planets, both of which are different from what came before and neither have the established institutions (like GUN)

You and Violet are two different people.

My first impression of Violet was not at all a good one, and as time has gone on, things have only Speed Highway'd from there. Sometimes she seems nice. Sometimes she seems pretend nice, but actually condescendingly fake in that niceness. Other times, she's actually openly extremely disingenuous in how she responds and what she says.

She's a mix of caring about canon and the wind to some degree, and then also oversaturating all of that with her personal headcanon and preferences, very intermixingly so. I'm pretty sure they didn't want vocal songs due to the majority of the Sonic fanbase thought they were unnecessary for the franchise. I created the proto-version of this OC purely out of wanting to give the Shadow-inspired character I have, "Eclipse", a friend, and the first thought was Rouge. They would have had vocals if it weren't for limitations, though. Sonic 2's ending theme has lyrics. Hell, Sonic 3's music literally do have voice samples. Sonic's design is partially based on fucking Michael Jackson, and he was supposed to do MJ dances in the sound test of Sonic 1.
