I highly doubt sonic team based angel island on Jamaica/Santiago, or even intended people to be debating his ethnic analogs 30 years later. Regardless, rarely are ancient cultures the first to inhabitants a given area. The thule peoples replaced the dorset. The zapotec succeeded the olmec. The danes replaced the jutes and angles, etc. I think knuckles is supposed to represent a relic population of an ancient culture rather than anything neo-colonial.

Sure, but it also mirrors pretty much everywhere in north and south america during the age of discovery, not to mention Africa, Polynesia, and parts of Asia. There existing an older civilization on Angel Island wouldn't be surprising at all, but it's very difficult to pinpoint a precise historical analog given just how common it is for one civilization to replace another.

Angel Island could be Santiago, it could also be Hispaniola. Obviously it's namesake is in San Francisco, but I always thought it could potentially be a reference to the island that the Aztecs built Tenochititlan on in lake Texcoco.
This is further advanced by SA1, in which the history of the knuckles clan seems to be very Aztec-esque. They started out as a small band, but eventually settled and expanded their domain by subjugating their neighbors.

Regarding S3&K, I think they were just playing around with ancient cultures and trying to make the land feel old, but SA1 certainly narrowed, or "simplified" this (as you said) by focusing heavily on pre-columbian cultures.

Angel Island being artificial like Tenochtitlan would have been an interesting direction to go in for the location.

I feel like the Knuckles Tribe being an empire would have had more impact if the location wasn't just populated with a bunch of Knuckles clones, but rather other blobians like how the most ancient empires were. No, but since we were pretty much talking about S3K-SA1 I wasn't aware that was what I was arguing, so I'm a little confused.

On relevancy, I will say that knuckles himself is much more relevant to the series than trip, and much of what the adventure games gave him (which are very popular in their own right) still follow him. We even saw a rendering of the knuckles clan backstory in the movie and spinoff.

I guess in the end it just sort of further illustrates my point. In order for anything the sungazers are doing to be relevant, significant or compelling, Trip needs to be. Her sequestration to nu-classic probably sort of precludes that. At most you will probably only ever see cameos or brief snapshots going forward of her tribe, whereas it's likely that knuckles, the ME and his clan could get major development again of they ever decide to focus on his character. The latter stands a better chance because he's part of the main cast.

I love Metal a lot, and trust me I tolerate amyfags and her character back when she was really good. But I don't really understand the mentality that you hate women if you don't support an entire year of a character that hasnt been good since pre-boom and is a dead husk of a character nowadays with no genuine narrative progression or any tangible likability in current day. She's still a tacked on part of Sonic and already has a mountain of appearances, game inclusions, and everything under the sun regardless of her state in the narrative. Its not even because "Muh Metal", but literally any other character would benefit more than Amy. I agree with you, but I don't want every single game to be extremely serious. I like to have some lighter stuff as well, like Superstars. Even then Superstars did also have some kind of lore focus, a traditional Sonic story, and even a new playable character. Ideally I think it would be better to have most games somewhere in the middle, like Adventure 1 or Rush Adventure or Unleashed, and only have these extreme interpretations (Frontiers/Superstars) on occasion
