So I finally reached the infamous issue that pretty much got Penders canned and I thought I'd say my thoughts on the series so far
>I think after Issue 50, the series is still alright and fun to read up until the Sonic Adventure adaption. That's when the comic just spirals out of control imo and the quality goes all over the place. Adapting that was the worst idea they ever had.
>People blame Ken Penders for a lot of the stuff in Archie, and maybe they're right. But I don't think Karl Bollers gets enough hate. He wrote some of the worst material I've ever seen in this entire franchise. I genuinely couldn't believe some of the stuff I was reading when he wrote an issue. Best writer has to be Mike Gallagher, I wonder if he's still writing stuff today cause I'd be willing to check it out.

When all is said and done, the series has been a rollercoaster of quality up till now but I still had a ton of fun reading it.

Everytime Silver's future has gone to shit (06, Generations, Forces) it's due to some asshole doing time travel shenanigans. When that happens, Silver (for unexplained reasons) has to fix it.

In Sonic06, it was Eggman sending Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles into the future. Without the trio, he succeeds in capturing Elise but fucks up, releasing Iblis thus leading to Silver's bad future.

In Sonic Generations, Time Eater fucks up the timeline thus Silver shows up. The future, past, and present are all in disarray and Silver...gets his ass kicked by Sonic.

In Sonic Forces, the Phantom Ruby has warped from the past into Eggman's hands, giving him the edge to finally beat Sonic. Silver shows up and fights Infinite, knocking out the "Phantom Ruby" prototype that would later be used by the Avatar to save the world.

So yeah. Someone uses time travel to fuck with the timeline. I'd add Rivals but the future isn't ruined in those games.

You're right about the manual, but I think it's fair to say Adv 2 doesn't properly tutorialize its trick system in gameplay well enough to prepare the player for something like Sky Canyon.

Going back to the special rings I feel like another issue with them isn't just that they are hard to find, its that they basically require the player to play the zone perfectly; you have to get all seven (7) rings in one (1) go on one (1) life to get one (1)special stage attempt. And this is all wrapped in level design that does not really allow backtracking.

I think Dimps has a lot of great ideas for Sonic, but that definitely wasn't one of them.

I will say thee special stage rings were the worst part of the game. It had me sweating as a kid, but I also think that game might have been responsible for me being a kleptomaniac completionist too. The problem is exactly what you said: the stages aren't designed for backtracking, so you have to play them a million times until they're burned into your memory and then plan out a route before even thinking about getting the CHANCE to get the emeralds. Imagine doing this as a kid with no save states.

But still, I always say getting the Chaos Emeralds isn't always necessary in a Sonic game. You really don't HAVE to do it, even though you get rewarded for doing so. You can still just have a good time with the game, that's my perspective.

As far as how it would be approached in 3D, uses slopes and winding terrain to allow Sonic to build up speed, and if you can keep that speed long enough, you boost. The special stage ring system could even be the same as advance 2, but now you can make an informed decision based on your surroundings because of the added z axis. And of course, the stages should, in my opinion, be designed to support backtracking. The kind of design that makes players restart the stage a million times should be for runs, not for exploring and collecting.


One last point about the boost we got from 2008's Sonic Unleashed HD: me no likey. Make it a powerup. If you want to encourage gameplay like that and reward the player, they should play perfectly and never lose the powerup.
