I just fought Vulcanus and while I eek'd by this was a really tedious fight and would have taken 100x longer without the aoe damage agent ability.

Does it ever let you brute force the game with your preferred mons? Having to have the right typing AND the right element BUT also the right damage typing seems like a lot -- or are you just supposed to get into boss fight, learn its typings and gimmick, and then quit out and load up the perfect team?

You can brute force the game but you'd have to actively stop and grind it. The intention is to pack reverse on your teams and have a composition with good coverage so you aren't caught with your pants down on a blind encounter.
Difficulty is extremely variable in the game across different encounters depending on your team but the overall game isn't hard enough that you ever have to autistically min-max.

An Ultimate digimon is going to blow most standard fully evolved pokemon out of the water.
There's some variance here, there are really weak ultimates, and really strong "normal" pokemon.
There might be some particular matchups that could swing this as well.

Gardevoir is a strange case, because they have an outlier ability, in the whole black hole thing, but that ability has never really been shown, nor is it really treated with the correct sort of gravitas such an ability reasonably would be, if it existed. If it does exist, and Gardevoir can indeed just do it whenever it feels like it, it might be swinging at or even above the average digimon Ultimate. But, black holes aren't THAT fat out of curve with what stronger Ultimates and Megas can swing with.
If it's highly conditional, or entails something like the Gardevoir's death, cool beans, get in line with the other champions or dogshit ultimates with one cool, highly unreliable trick. Leomon dying to make people get their shit together is a fun trick, too.
If it doesn't exist at all, Champion for days, and not even an impressive one.
Angewomon is... I'd say above average for an Ultimate, but conditional in a way that probably doesn't help in any Pokemon matchup, let alone Gardevoir. MAYBE she can super fuck up Darkrai or Hoopa or something, but, "evil" doesn't really exist the same way in Pokémon as does in Digimon, and that's where Angewomon's outlier abilities come online. Still a very competent Ultimate either way though.

I'd put Gardevoir's black hole thing on the "highly situational or fatal to use" just by vibes of how the ability is explained amd treated, so I think Gardevoir has a shot in the fight, but Angewomon has a pretty solid advantage
