I think the Zack Beagleverse shit has been a wasted opportunity. I wanted to have a party with Zack, Cloud and Aerith for a moment, where they could all three interact and there could even be tension. That was my hope and dream. But it was just a bunch of timewasting walky talky "expanded lore" to sloppily showcase how 'hopes and dreams' manifest in the Lifestream or whatever the fuck was happening there. We still don't understand what is going on. I honestly couldn't tell you. All of it leads to convolution that doesn't have a strong emotional resonance but that fuels speculation, and is a reason a lot of people don't like Nomura/Kingdom Hearts. Completely unnecessary expansion, didn't go anywhere worthwhile for the entire game. I was definitely disappointed. But it's not over yet, and there were still things about the concept of overlapping realities and the way Zack/Aerith helped out at the end that I liked and it tied back into the main theme in a great way gameplay wise, "no one is ever really gone".

The best expanded lore so far is probably the Gi tribe, though. I mean, that part was genuinely fucking great and came out of left field. The fact that Gi Nattak is the voice from the original reveal trailer of FFVII Remake....it goes to show that there really was some thought put into this project. I really liked the Cosmo Canyon portion in the original, so seeing how extensive they went with that gameplay sequence and the backstory for the Gi was really damn cool. It also really helps to tie even more things together in the story, what with the Gi being from another planet and all.....I also really enjoyed all of the Temple segment with all the Jenova and Cetra wank. It was pretty damn amazing.

There's a difference between disliking something and that something being "bad" because it's "contradictory to canon" or some other autistic shit. I didn't like the needlessly convoluted expansion of the Lifestream lore, I don't think it makes that much sense. It doesn't add to FFVII in a meaningful way that other lore expansions have, like the Gi tribe. Can I tell you that it "contradicts" what we have seen? What we've seen from FFVII on PS1? Not so sure. Aerith is presumed to have helped the party by using the Lifestream to protect the planet from Meteor at the end. So if she isn't really gone and her spirit still resides in the Lifestream during the original game, then it's not "contradictory" if they start writing more and more rules about what happens down there in the Lifestream.

Maybe you can argue the entire story exists as a contradiction, simply for existing the way it does at all?

I’m the poster that asked 2-3 weeks ago about what other FFs should I play if I enjoyed VII remakes and never played jrpgs before (I think there was a specific, other poster that had a good recommendation about XV and Strangers of paradise, so they should recognize me)
Anyway, I wanted to share some thoughts now that I’m on chapter 8 of XV.

There are exactly 2 words and in that exact order that can summarize FFXV: “easy” and “weird”. By easy I mean- even if you dont do every quest that you have in the overworld, or if you do only a few quests and hunts, you level up too quickly and rack up a small fortune of gil. So the main quests feel almost trivial.
Also in that regard, if you level up and have strong weapons, spells and magic become completely optional or even unnecessary. In my case, I used fira or blizzara only twice up to chapter 7 and only because I wanted to slow down the enemies, cuz of ice. Its almost sad how such an iconic part of FF is sidelined.

Now regarding “weird”- the story is a bit lacking. For example- the gang has to go and get the powers of the gods/summons/whatever and they do, 2 of them and after that, its completely sidelined. But what is weirder is how Aranea swoops in, wants to obviously kill the gang and after that, its all peachy and we’re killing daemons together.

But after all this, I like the game. I like how I can go everywhere, customize the things, the combat is good and I’m not constrained by turns, battles or whatever. It might not seem much but it makes me happy.

Tldr; XV is easy and weird but I enjoy it

Try a level 1 run with no items. XV is easily the most brutal mainline FF since almost everything above level 50 can oneshot you and there's almost no way to see attacks coming since mons in this game have no attack cues, they can attack whenever they want without any warning except for the attacks you can parry, it's worst when you fight hoards of them. Food buffs can only get you so far and there's no place to eat in the final dungeon. Supposedly, they planned a hard mode for the game, but SE pulled the plug on the XV project before they could release it along with other DLC.
