I still push for Torment when I can, the only character to date that I've ever wanted and skipped was Kirara, who thankfully spooked me shortly afterwards and that was only because Shupos or something were announced so I was making sure I was maximising the chances of students I wanted.
The meta is rarely so cutthroat you can't cobble something together unless you're new, and I wouldn't have made it from new to old if I'd skipped rolling on the students I actually liked, meta be damned. The extra peanuts you get from gold->plat are a terrible incentive to continue playing vs having a student you actually care about.

When you're at the point that you're nearly maxing students out they do get pretty expensive, but at that point you just grind credits as the need arises, rather than whenever. Many players will be sitting on hundreds of millions of credits with no way to spend them fast enough because they're being gated from further upgrades by a lack of books/artifacts/blueprints

I started December last year and credits have consistently been my largest bottleneck. Generally speaking I can max out several students a month by buying tech notes, blurays and relics from the GA/TA shops and by doing events but I run out of credits and secret tech notes by doing that.

What's worse is that for the most part I don't generate enough reports from events so in order to actually level new students I have to split by commission farming between credits and reports. I currently only have enough reports left to level one student and I'm just waiting with bated breath to see who I'll need to invest in for the next raid.

Even just raising students as-needed for raids and pvp leaves me perpetually credit-starved.
