Anyone excited for VIIR? I am excited for the voices and graphics, but don't care for the UI, puppets, DoF, kiddification, or dumbing down of the gameplay even further. I was wrong about the FFT voice acting and found it really enjoyable, so here's to hoping DQVIIR voices are half decent.

Not really, not after they were confirmed to be removing entire storylines from the game. Filler or no, they were still part of the overall DQ7 experience, and they could have easily moved them to the optional pile instead of just removing them outright.

I agree with the autist, if you get free MP recovery, there's no point in interacting with inns, recovery items, or prayer rings.

Same thing happens in PS1 once you get access to classes.
Anonymous No.543629821 [Report] >>543637026
>>543625732
except that only happens like once a dungeon or something, unless you somehow get level ups every few battles or something? How does that stop you from having to interact with inns, recovery items or prayer rings? (the latter two being so sparse and so unreliable i bet most don't interact with them anyway)
Besides, in my experience what really stops that is simply the numbers being tweaked specifically towards never needing to do that, not "free" heals. Like for example i'm playing the newest rune factory game and even on hard mode you basically never need to heal simply cause the numbers (damage received, enemies' health) are too low: installing a mode that multiplies those numbers suddenly makes the game more engaging in that sense (i'm using one that multiplies both by 4 times, and it's still not that hard).
Like take dark souls for example: its perceived "difficulty" is all down to enemies potentially killing you in a few hits no matter what, even though the games still gives you lots of healing opportunities, and dare i say the equivalent of free heals on level up by getting to bonfires that heal you and refill all your items, but the point is that the battle damage is skewed towards actually mattering and actually making you go "i need to use this and that". The game eventually leaving you without juice when you're 3/4 in a dungeon is just padding to make you backtrack and double the play time, cause otherwise you'd be done with the game "too quickly" (and even then, backtracking and then getting back also means you risk overlevelling, unless you autistically flee from fights)

tldr no

Does anyone here play X Online? It’s really good and worth it if you don’t.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone knows more about how this hidden slime event works. Can I find them just anywhere I look or are they only in towns, only in fields, etc? Are they different for every player or is there some kind of list to look up?

NTA but I had many moments in my draconian playthrough of 3HD where I'd be running low on MP on my healer(s), then they'd level up and I wouldn't have to worry anymore, or I would see that they're close to a level and I can just grind 3 more fights instead of evacing.
Anonymous No.543637412 [Report]
The free healing is only really frequent during the absolute early game which already tends to be face rollingly easy once you get boomerangs and the bang line. Around Level 20ish in HD on Draconian, exp gain slows down so much that you cant really bank on the free healing to carry you and enemies get strong enough that you have to regularly heal etc.
The real issue is that its too easy to gather resources if you're diligent in finding sparkly/secret spots to the point that only ever spend cash on specific gear and items.
Anonymous No.543637469 [Report] >>543650549
>>543637026
ye and i don't see how that's bad, you saved yourself a trip back and having to redo the whole dungeon again by managing your resources. I don't think anyone in their right mind would say "yeah i would've liked having to backtrack instead!".
Like i do get stuff like evac being 0 mp, that makes no sense, or them gradually removing the no zoom indoors thing (which is more about atmosphere than pure gameplay stuff), but the rest is just a good thing

So I guess to review from last thread on how the DQ2 gang will get DQ3's skills and spells doled out:
>Midenhall - All Warrior, with some Martial Artist skills for good measure
>Prince Cannock - Dabbles between everything, but excels at nothing. Has the requisite Zap spells in place of no-magic Midenhall
>Moonbrook - Full Sage, period, but picks up some Monster Master skills owing to her canine curse
>Princess Cannock - Gets all the weird and funny skills and spells that don't fit the others and is mainly support, but she's also the semi-Gadabout who potentially wastes turns being useless.
Sounds about right?

NTA but I think this is genuine difference in opinion. I like being crunched for resources. Healing on level up can tip things to be a bit too easy. I also would have preferred to have the puzzles. However I'm hopeful regarding 7R. Seems like the combat is modeled on XI which had good battles. I'm interested in the multiclassing. 7 3DS' class system did not work for me. I liked the PS1 version more but it's a bit too simple ultimately.

Speaking to Game*Spark (translated by Automaton Media), Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined producer Takeshi Ichikawa explained why the 2000 RPG skipped the remake queue, saying that "we felt that the game’s unique atmosphere and tone would resonate especially well with players today."

Ichikawa elaborated, "When it first came out, 7 was often said to have more dark and sorrowful episodes compared to other entries in the series. But nowadays, players are much more accustomed to games with darker stories." And that thanks to that the producer thinks that through this new version, modern players will be able to feel 7’s story and the emotions of the characters even more deeply.”

you do know computers can be hooked up to big tvs too right? Or alternatively doing what i do: use my hacked switch (but you can use any other hardware really, and there's plenty of choice of software too) to stream from my pc and then use the dock to hook my switch to the big tv. Visual quality is almost perfect (ironically my pc is the bottleneck i discovered, and only for really heavy games) and lag is only a problem for games that require very precise, frame perfect button presses, everything else can be played just fine. And even then it's nothing that really affects DQ games in any case
but anyway i don't want to get into some retarded discussion about what's ultimately personal preference, obviously you do you, hell the only real reason i usually play on pc is because of mods and the eventual piracy and that's it, like my pc's resolution is 1080p still cause i actually think i don't need any more than that

pretty enjoyable given most emulators will let you increase the internal resolution (so that 3D stuff looks better). The two screens are more of a single long screen usually, but a few emulators let you customize that so that you can position them however you want, and as for using the touch screen you use the mouse or whatever else can work (like if you're using a device with a touch screen)

As remakes go it's a positive step compared to something like 7 on 3DS, and it's infinitely better than the bad phone port you could get on Switch before this, but it's still a mixed bag. I'm cautiously optimistic for 1&2.

nah, besides 4chan i was active in lots of communities in the early 2000s, from dq, to seiken, to dbz fangames, but i just left when those forums closed down
older forums where about longer discussions, threads would last weeks, if not months, now everything's just about who's online right now, and that pretty much kills any sort of discussion
then there's also the fact that i don't have anything in common with any of these "people"

It was interesting.
"Speedrunning" dq1 turns it into a resource management game.
Plus I found a really cool grind from level 6 to 8 when you do dives into the dark cave because there is a chest that has over 100 gold that refills when you leave.
Plus you can get lucky and get the cursed necklace which sells for 1300 or so.
I was only frustrated because I tried to beat it at level 18. You only have a 43% chance to run from armored knights and red dragons.
At level 19, 20, 21 and beyond it becomes waaaay easier to beat thr game. And it's only a 15 minute grind until level 19.
So while it took me longer to do it the speedrun way a casual run can just grind until level 20 and have a better time.

no, as in "it doesn't have literally everything every previous version of the game had". The only game I've played where I was kinda comfy throughout was 9. You had your simple acts and collectables, towns rarely last more than an hour, the story never lost momentum. I'll do this by class

Hero: Paragon is better than Vamp for the Majority of the game, Vamp only takes over after you start dealing most of your damage with KaZap and regularly acting as a healer in boss fights

Virtually all non-heroes: Bat out of Hell should be the default 'idk what to use' doesn't have negative stats and ensures your Mage/Sages get off the important AoE spells before randoms and makes traveling around a smoother experience

Healer: Wit or Tough Cookie - don't need as much scaling but not dying is a great perk for healers

The Melee: Paragon(usually by means of the accessory as many classes can't start as Paragon so Tough Cookie or in some cases Bat will have to do for the start) Whichever class they end up as they should pass through Merchant to learn Muster(which stacks with Oomph) Especially Strong with an ex-theif (learn persecutter)

Gadabouts can start Vamp and it's honestly not bad for Sage considering the main draw of Gadabout -> Sage is that you can make it into anything for the post game so no stats get wasted

More like
Bodybuilder/Tough Cookie - Melee
Wit/Vamp - Magic
Lucky Devil - Gadabout via Hen's Tooth to max out their Luck and then you change over to Vamp when you go Sage.

Luck is not a dump stat in HD because it modifies phys ranges, crit rates and ailment success/resistance. A Mage/Sage with very high luck is quite potent since they can outspeed and use Snooze/Fuddle to cripple encounters/set up for a Falcon Blade Persecutter.
Hero's magic is quite solid long before Kazap/Omniheal, since you get a bunch of key spells around the same time as your primary mages and Zap line is a common weakness. Phys is mostly just for filler boomerang chip and a couple elemental slashes if you cant slam them with a spell (not common)

Luck is the only stat that has an accessory that gives a giga-fucking-enormous +50 - This ostensibly makes it's Growth one of the less important growths when comparing personality as a deficiency is more readily fixed than anything else.

To say Phys is "just" for Boomerang chip is questionable. Boomerangs are king of the random encounter up until your party learns Boom and Kacrack 23-25(with a suppose a notable exception for a slightly over leveled Hero sometimes having Sizzle at 18 just in time to burn several mummies in the pyramid) - and unless your endgame plan is to get both DuplicHats and wizard down bosses that way you're likely already using Sap/Oomph for the Created Physical hitter at which point the Elemental Slashes with a reasonable weapon will outperform appropriate level spells for everything from Khandar to Troll, with ghostbusters and Garbs being the only Overworld bosses magic is particularly superior

Thank you for attending my Ted Talk

Yes, its primarily for boomerang chip because a lot of the stronger vocations can either use boomerangs or have their own form of AoE like Bang/Stone Throw/Boulder Toss etc.
You dont need particularly high strength on Hero because they made AoE very easy to access in HD.

Hero gets Zap/Zapple to delete key targets and Sizzle/Boom/Kasizz/Kazap all at key points to assist your mage/sage's sweeping. Then as you said, one Kacrack shows up around the orb quest, boomerangs are on the backburner outside metals. Its also worth noting that magic on a whole is stronger as of August 2025 due to better scaling, so spellcasters are much more competitive in the long term. This does come at a cost of ailment infliction being harder on Draconian, so you really do need all the luck you can get on your Gadabout > Sage.

Furthermore, if you're talking long term planning, Hero's offense is the least relevant vs bosses. No Cutting Edge/Falcon Blade + Persecutter/Wild Side/Pile On/Duplic Hat/etc.

On the note of Luck, yes, even with the Hen's Tooth/Shoes, you still dont want to penalize it too hard due to mechanical quirks. Agility is easier to fix since you get like 2 Meteorite Bracers, 4 Mercury Bandanas AND Wild Side boosts speed. Its also wise to stagger your team's speed tiers so that your Egg On bot can go before your main physical character for better turn efficiency. Hero lacks access to the big stuff even with Falcon Blade and Auroral Helm, so he tends to end up being an Omniheal/Kazap/Orochi Sword bot by the end.

Btw, everything from Khandar to Troll is just wrong. Multiple bosses have weaknesses that magic can also exploit. Phys only really cleanly wins on sole wind weak enemies.

Because every town has a punch clock villain with as much attention as the big bads do. They often have no personality outside of being evil for the sake of being evil, almost to a fault. I also personally found that even the ones written with a personality like 7's and 9's were kinda underwhelming.
The thing is that Final Fantasy also has villains that are evil for the sake of being evil but their designs are so striking that I will remember them. Exdeath comes to mind as a big bad who generally is as shallow and has as much screentime as a DQ villain... Dude is built like a fucking boss. Then you get to the last phase which is a cascade of nightmarish demons and he's a difficult fight too. This is debatably one of the least fleshed out Final Fantasy bosses and he puts the DQ lineup to shame.

You know, I'm starting to get the impression that 1&2 were the actual target games this whole time.
Think about it. 3 already had it's major content expansion decades ago on SNES, and HD-2D doesn't really add much more to that. 1 and 2 never got anything like that until now. It almost feels as if the 3 remake was just practice for 1&2, rather than the "well all that work can be re-used, may as well do them too" scenario that most people seem to be thinking.

Anonymous No.544560771 [Report]

Without getting into the factors around DQ, consider that FF hitting international megasuccess with 7 meant there was an incentive to get entries in that series out quickly, and since it was developed internally (unlike DQ) the suits could apply more pressure to make that happen.

Series basically ended for all intents and purposes, so releases could relax.
DQVII was basically the ultimate DQ game and also had a lot of dev hell.
Then DQVIII was made to address some critiques of VII and create a fully 3D DQ.
DQIX was moreso a proto for the multiplayer DQ idea, which became...
DQX, which was an MMORPG.

And XI was an anniversary game.

Whereas with FF, FFVII-X were the start of SE realizing they should be pushing harder. When Sakaguchi left, they did just that, but ironically, FF only slowed down since XII.

Dragon Quest has more remakes
Anonymous No.544563886 [Report]
>>544559438
One thing that distinguishes DQ from FF, and other series as well, is the fact that there really isn't a dedicated developer. DQ has gone through at least three different developers before being developed internally by SE with 10 and onwards. This means being far less likely to retain key staff between releases, unlike Square in the 80s and 90s who developed everything by themselves and were more likely to retain people, letting them more easily iterate on games and push out frequent releases.
DQ7 was where things slowed down tremendously. It had been delayed numerous times, the most out of any DQ game at that point, due to various factors like switching from the N64 to PS1, and Heartbeat, while they exceeded at 2D game development, struggled with 3D and the newer hardware. This caused Horii to drop Heartbeat once development on the DQ4 PS1 remake finished and he landed on Level 5, who were vastly more apt with 3D development.
The series would see another slow down with DQ9 which they originally made as an ARPG that got scrapped in favor of going back to turn based gameplay.

ever since then lots of people whined about 'THEY WAITED FOR TORIYAMA TO DIE TO CHANGE THE ART', and that never stopped, they blame everything on censorship that has already been in 8, 9, 11, or M3
doesn't help that the biggest coverage 3make has gotten was culture warriors making videos about it being censored and spreading misinfo like gender-exclusive vocations that have been removed by the evil DEI type 1 or 2

I've been playing DQ1 for 10 hours, holy fucking shit the Draconian Quest is overtuned.

I'm very high level for a boss encounter of two Dragon Zombies, I have 310 HP and best Ice resist gear from grinding Gold Golems, these dragons can deal anywhere from 30 HP to 400 HP a round. There's no crowd control, no spells other than Buff from the Faerie Blade that can take this range down to 30 HP to 300 HP.
All of this would be fine if I was playing DQ2 with a party of characters, but I have only one. This is the kind of bullshit difficulty I fucking hate, where you're hard level checked. I've beaten DQ8 at pretty much purely Boss EXP and finished at level 28, so it's not me.

In the remake versions there's still tons of dialogue with Nera or Debora via party chat, if you beeline for the objective they're not with you for *that* long (and they rejoin later on so you'll have them for the endgame/postgame) but they have something to say about most NPCs at most locations in the game so there's still a lot to them. All three are really good characters, even compared to ones from other DQ games with party chat who are with you for the entire game.

at the end you fight, Hargon who then sacrifices himself to become Malroth.
After Malroth defeat, some dark force possess it, that is the true final boss from DQ11 and it becomes a gigantic monster with kino 3d scenes, the heroes gets rescrued by Rubiss and a bird and you fight the dark force like Raphatorne in DQ8, you use the sword of light and you destroy it

DQ1 Draconian is retardedly overtuned starting with the Faerie Village Dragon Zombies. The level curve as the EXP sets you up gets you to maybe 25 at that point, I grinded to 29 and still was one rounded from the start.

I have a sneaking suspicion they balanced Draconian to work with DQ2 and the just ported those same multipliers and AI parameters to DQ1. The difference in HP and double action rate in DQ1 makes a lot of the late game level checks that you have to just out HP.
The armour guarding the Erdricks Armour in Damdara is going to smash you for 320 HP and the only thing outside of grinding is getting lucky with dodges because some skills go through Cop Out and Defending Champion.

Ultimately I used the skill Cop Out and died a few more times realizing, "I'll eventually win as long as I get good RNG." I eventually won because of good RNG, but it didn't feel fun or like I actually strategized well. It was literally just me getting the procs necessary for the enemies to kill themselves on me rather than me coming to a conclusive strategic solution to win the fight.

Yeah That's how I did that encounter as well, it wasn't that bad because there's a decent chance to not die, not fun, but not absurd.
Later on into the game there's nothing you can do except face tank shit, putting up too many buffs is pointless because they last for only for 3-5 turns, which again would be fine with three party members, but when you're just one character buffs are useless outside vanishingly few cases.

I agree. I'm early on into DQ2 and it's immediately feeling more balanced, you're not one shotting early game or being one shotted wandering too far out.

DQ3 remake was easy but out of necessity since they couldn't design around a set party.
DQ11 draconian was the most fun hard mode I played as a first timer in that title, every encounter was plotted out like a problem to be solved and the huge variety of build and rebuilds with abilities and gear meant you were almost never RNG fucked.
Playing subsequent runs in more limited draconians added onto that, well except for the shypox ones which are RNG by design and definitely not for me.

That's probably about how long I was playing the game in 6th grade over the course of a week before ultimately dropping it.
In that time I hadn't found any Erdrick equipment, saved Gwaelin, or even killed the golem.

You summarised my thoughs exactly. Also, how does the new ending of DQ2 connect with the canon of the Erdrick trilogy? Is the final boss a combination of Malroth and Zoma? Or simply a nod to XI? Sometimes simple is better, and I don't like several of the additions in the remakes.

I still want to get an answer to this >>544769289 so I know when to pause before taking on the new post-Malroth adventure.

1 is in my top 5 of the series so i really wanted to love this version of it but it feels the most flawed of them all even the phone ports. definitely looks better and has better music but it drags at times.

>dq1 hd MC's resilience stat gain is so bad that savescumming defense seeds is mandatory.
It feels like it's glitched with how low it is.

Its probably the same scaling that DQ3's Hero has where its low early on and rapidly scales past a certain point.

The discrepancy in play time is probably based on the version you play. The shorter runs tend to be on the remakes.

NTA but that's kinda sad to hear. DQ3 is my favorite and I wasn't at all impressed with what I played of the HD2D remake. Nothing I saw of 1&2 HD2D in the trailers really wowed me, and based on what I'm hearing it seems like I'll just have to stick with the SFC versions forever. I've been wary about the direction DQ has been going down for a while now.

i still like the game overall but i just don’t think it’s great. i imagine the changes probably work better with 2 but i don’t plan on starting that up till sunday.

I'm old enough to remember everyone here bitching that DQ3 HD's hard mode was too easy. But now DQ1 HD is too hard because you can't just steamroll everything? Lmao.

This is why I chose to play DQ1 first before 3. Even with more story filler, it's always going to be the shortest and least involved of the Erdrick trio, which is even more glaring when it's stuck in the middle of 3 and 2. At least doing it first gets it out of the way and builds up better to the more-impressive games.

Damn... I tried to fight the Knight Aberrant at Lv.22, but I couldn't even get him to half health. I used a combination of Dodgy Dance, Faerie Foil, and Cop Out, and I was able to survive like eight minutes of battling before I deleted all my MP. Horii REALLY doesn't want you to get the Erdrick Armour ASAP, huh?

Most flawed? Why because Horii decided to maks draconian actually challenging and not a disguised normal mode? I find it hard to believe that this is worse than the older versions aside from your nostalgia being bothered.

I mean, I started 1 on Draconian and I'm enjoying having to actually put some thought into my choices since there's no backup to bail me out.

it wasn't "everyone", it was one guy that clearly never actually played the game. Everyone else that actually did got difficulty spike'd at the desert, even on normal, and didn't dare call the game easy
