What's the percentage of cheaters in chess? In Go it's like 5-8% (less than 1% if you avoid Chinese players) and it's contained to the higher levels that most people won't reach. Reading these posts here give me the impression that like 20% of people are cheating online chess in all of the ranks.

Danya's death makes me want to puke, it's very upsetting, and it doesn't add up. The guy was loved by thousands, was a chess celebrity, was deeply engaged in his community, has a full schedule, was a top online player, ivy league education, came from a wealthy family full of successful people, had an interesting and privileged upbringing. The idea that he would off himself because of Kramnik's nonsense doesn't add up. It seems more likely that he had a lot of other mental health issues and a pill addiction. Kramnik didn't help but he couldn't be THE ONLY reason Danya died. It's a very unusual situation and I think a lot is hidden from us, may never be revealed fully.

I have around 11k blitz games on my lichess account and still hover around 1400-1500 rating because I am too lazy to learn any openings and always just wing it, usually deciding what to play by trial and error. how much better would I be able to get if I actually tried and learned some openings?

I enjoy learning different openings for fun, you can get a bigger variety of positions by learning a bunch of openings. And conversely if you are playing the same opening over and over you will become more and more familiar with the positions that arise and the ideas in those positions.

And beyond the obligatory 'do tactics', also just practice good evaluation. Understand what the best response to whatever move you make is. A lot of the time tactics are one thing but avoiding blunders is a different story. A lot of the time you make an innocuous move that happens to be catastrophic, and that comes from not just tunnel vision but not thinking about what the opponent's best response is.

There's always a chance of stalemate, especially if you can somehow get the final piece or pawn a knight's move away from a corner with your king behind it so if they take it with a queen then it's a forced stalemate. Not that I can be bothered, I would just resign usually. But it's a good mentality to have, fighting spirit. It helps not just when dead lost but after a single blunder a person like that is going to keep playing without feeling defeated or tilted. Whereas I will get mad at myself and tilted if I blunder and fail to recover.

It can also be a way of dealing with the tilt in itself. "well I've fucking lost like a retard, let me play it out to deal with the tilt and make this guy work for it"
