Schneider had a rough childhood and her life kept getting rougher as time went by, doing the best she could to keep what she could call "loved ones" relatively safe and alive, but ultimately she was always treated like a puppet, kept miserable and jaded. Vertin was the first person that seems to have ever given her the benefit of the doubt and acted with principle towards her, putting the integrity and sanctity of a life above whether that life deserves to live, which is how Manus operated and how life in extreme poverty tends to work.
