conan exiles is $4, and i've played it a few times on ps+ and kinda had fun wandering around other people's servers and doing nothing in the Tier 1 wastelands

There are full servers, including those with hardline RP/ERP. You should definitely try servers with mods, but maybe only when you are bored from vanilla.

I used to wander around to check for bases that were about to collapse and get an insane amount of loot. Once I found one, I would build a temporary storage house nearby and move everything into my own boxes. One time, I had a giant warehouse just filled with boxes and boxes of loot like the one at the ending of Indiana Jones. Didn't even bother doing anything else. Yeah bumping it up to high didn't actually suck as hard as I thought, but there's three things I need to solve:

Lights with lense flare effects look checkerboard and flicker. There's a thin ghosting around characters when they move. Some textures at a distance look like they're dithering a bit. A part from that... It's serviceable?

Should I watch the movies before playing these?
I'm a big sci-fi head and the Dune books are some of my all time favourite.
I don't really watch a lot of movies or TV, I like the original Star Trek series and Star Wars is pretty good, but I haven't seen the new stuff.
I don't really have a frame of reference to how the game is following the movie, is it basing a lot of the design off that or is it original?

It's cooked m8. Graphics are bad but the game runs like shit somehow. Combat is terrible, everything rubberbands all over the place, you can stunlock other players to death with the knife like a 90's fighting game. Construction system is mid, climbing feels awful and doesn't work properly, animations are janky/bugged, you lose moisture quickly while idling in your base so you have to logout to idle. There's no NPC's that do the tedious shit for you like in other modern survival games, it's just a chore simulator with bad gameplay.

Heed my advice and avoid this stinker. Exiles is a much better game. The max boob size on this is like b cup, there's no body physics and every outfit looks like a gimp costume. It needs another 2-3 years in the oven, at least, to be as good as other survival games. Nice of 'fun'com to let me play it early though, dodged a bullet there.

I get the feeling it's gonna be pretty bad, and this is coming from someone who love Dune and has like 500h in Conan.

Conan had tons of issues but was bolstered by the fact that the world was interesting and well built, and the DLC packs let you build/RP all sorts of different eras and whatnot.
Dune is literally one giant desert. I imagine build packs are going to be House themed for the most part, but that will never be as interesting as Greek/Mongolian etc.

Maybe I'll be wrong. Interested to see what you all think of the Beta

I'm not impressed. The combat really is not very good at all, and that's going to be a dealbreaker for most people looking for a large scale PvP game. I can't see how the endgame is going to work if shields just trivialize most of the guns the sandworm can just eat everyone and steal all their loot/gear whilst they're fighting for spice. It seems like it could possibly be fun if you have a big guild and you're fighting against another big guild, but the solo and small group players basically get jack shit. PvP games are notoriously hard to keep alive, even the free ones, and I don't see this being an exception.

It kind of does in the first zone, but once you get to the later areas, every pack of mobs has melee guys mixed in; like 1 shooter and 2 melee guys. The enemy NPC's can use every skill you can seemingly and the melee ones in particular can knock you about like a pinball while the others just shoot away at you. Regular guns are next to useless against the melee dudes so you basically either have to pull the melee dudes around a corner so you can stab them without getting shot at or dodge the melee dudes like Goku on crack while shooting at the ranged dudes.

I think the problem is exasperated by the fact that the switching between weapons feels really bad and clunky. This isn't like Darktide where you can dome a guy 30 meters away, pull out your axe and decapitate a dude in less than a second, switching feels slow and awkward and every decision seems to be a bad one. They need to make it so you have a melee and a range weapon which you switch between with Q, and you can change them with the numkeys or the inventory.

Feeling so vindicated in my decision to ignore this game until now. I knew Funcom would fuck it up.

i played 8 hours of this here is my review. did all the content available in first 2 areas minus collecting every useless alt recipe/lore item.

progression/loot system is nice. the early t3 upgrades feel good. unique items are cool too. game feels a bit drawn out and grindy. most areas feel the same after the first few hours. the beta locks you out of going to the t3 area so thats the end, 2 zones. the "main story" quest is slop and boring. map wide events like worms and sandstorms are cool, the sandstorm is kinda underwhelming. the voice acting is terrible, i hate it. building system is ok i guess. combat is ok but very buggy. grappling hook ability plus the fly packs lets you traverse mountains in 2 seconds - it's fun but imbalanced. worms were a non threat for me but i guess they kind scary.

the core gameplay just aint doing it for me, too boring. lategame vehicles/rocket launcher i dont think will add much for me.

I enjoyed it. The base building was comfy and if you had some creativity you could make some pretty cool stuff that isn't a prefab rectangle on the ground. Exploring was fun as well.

The devs said they "fixed" the stunlock bullshit in their internal build, not sure if they said how. The big clip going around is slightly out of context because the person stunlocking is using some sort of ability that silences abilities, and if you have at least 50% stamina you can dodge out of the stunlock. Still retarded though. because keeping in theme with the lore, hitting someone's shield with a knife at a fast speed should not only do 0 damage but stagger the attacker instead. Adding on to this, allowing players to manually toggle their shields could open a whole slew of mindgames in PvP. I was also always under the impression that if you had a shield, you had to manually disable it to shoot a gun, so that mechanic could be implemented too.

Something to note is that it's easier to hide in this since people in the open world don't have huge floating names above their heads like in other games, which means a scout/carto playstyle should be doable, but it depends on the rewards really which we don't know yet..

I was thinking how EVE is the only game I've ever seen with shit like selling the locations of things (bookmarks) but that only works because the map is also the key essentially.
I once saw an Astero + hauler + escort head to jspace with the party being in different guilds, it was incredible but that only works because of the contracts + collateral system

81 total tiles randomized each week, and assuming each world server gets a different roll, anyone looking to set up a dedicated 'Here's a print screen of the map' is going to be facing a lot of work
Plus you actually have to get out to each tile with proper perks and scanning equipment

But the real way to get people to buy maps in game, is to tie it so if you are in a tile with a map of that tile, you get a significant loot chance bonus of some kind

Having the whole start area being a locked PvE zone helps, and the Deep Desert has enough space and instancing and mechanics from the game (no massive name tags or IDs visible at all times) that ratting is gonna be comfy

Made three bases so far, starter one (demolished), first north base (west of anvil, built into a cliff, abandoned now) and finally my current “main” with a friend (built at the exact center of the map for safe building)
I have an NPC camp on either side of my base and had no issues whatsoever building. Just don’t be dumb and try to construct right on top of an obvious no build zone.
Also I have two sub fiefs left to place since my main is the advanced build, tell me anons: should I save both for Deep Desert shenanigans? Seems like making a temp popup on the PvE wall of the desert and then saving a final for the proper desert would be useful.

There should be more ways to grief players in Dune

Dune is about betrayal, deception, ambition, and survival in a cutthroat universe. Walling off paths to important points is a good start but it's definitely not enough. Atreidies players will cry about it but they are too weak to consider their opinion.

The entire Dune universe is about backstabbing politics, sabotage, and exploiting weakness. Why shouldn’t players be able to secretly poison each other's spice harvesters, bribe guild officers, send fake distress calls, or betray allies mid-raid for a bigger cut?

Dune team should not care about Arteidis players who literally cry over having their chopper walled off. They are just weak and desert will cull them. It's clear as day they are not evolutionarily fit enough to take part in big politics. Sooner or later they will come back to happy farming in Farmville.

Think about it: you and your friends are gathering resources on the deep desert and get ambushed by Arteidis scum. You call for help to your guild friend and turns out it's the guy from recent thread, he is crying that he is afraid, that he just wants his escapism after work, and he is afraid to lose his stuff.

Being playing since the 5th, love the ambience, the sounds, the main quest and all the mini details from the lore,just going about exploring, that sandwalking kinda works, but... I dislike a lot the farm progresion, and the base bulding, and the melee combat is meh.

Feels like a bunch for mecanics choppy assamble together with a Dune skin, fuck I could just pay and enjoy the dune skin...
