NTA but I would generally agree Paladins at it's best scratched the itch these games aim for better than TF2 did a lot of the time. TF2 is very good, no doubt, but mostly at casual gameplay of doing your own thing of exploring the map in minor scuffles while relying on uncoordinated pushes that are mostly a diceroll as to whether your 11 other teammates are going to do well enough to get you all across the finish line. That's all good and fun, but I feel like Paladins was actually the peak of the "strategic", "competitive" form of the hero shooter, far more than Overwatch or ranked TF2 got anyways. Paladins with all it's flaws was enraging and soul destroying at times, but when you experienced it's heights, and got high on the potential, man, was it something. I don't think any game will ever compare.

The worst part is, there was going to be a Yagorath makeship plushie too, at least one prototype was made, and it was so close to release that when the news that development was being stopped broke there was a moment of uncertainty over whether or not it would still be released. Unfortunately, it was scrapped. Although those Smite makeship plushies never came out either, so maybe something happened behind the scenes for all I know. I would make a serial action/comedy series with fairly low stakes but with an overarching plot that sees the characters and their relationships grow over time and the setting change fairly often too. It would be a lot like Avatar: The Last Airbender, in that way, although it wouldn't be in the anime style and probably have less of the anime-inspired quirks in the writing or story. The story would be nothing like the weird gun control metaphor that they tried to write with the paladins and the magistrate or whatever. The whole realm-wide war with rebels and imperials and demons and catholics and whoever the fuck else is all but entirely gone. Most of the alpha lore is reinstated, too. The story begins by introducing Drogoz, a small, lowly wyrin, wingless and bound to servitude to a powerful and cruel dragon. Even as a malnourished youngling he is forced to slave away in gold mines to increase his master's hoard, cleaning and polishing treasures he could never afford, his body amassing scars and burns from all the times he was tormented by his superiors for not even having wings to fly let alone an inner hearth with which to spew fire. His torment ends when one day the dragon's subterranean lair is racked by explosions; boulders fall all around him, screams and roars echo from all parts of the cave, until total darkness falls and he is trapped in a tiny crawlspace. He tries to spark a flame to be able to see, but he can't, and he falls to the ground in defeat. Suddenly, a light shines upon him; the boulder above him is pushed to the side with ease by a tall woman made of stone. The light is from the torch of a elvish woman in silver armor; she's looking for her allies that went missing during the disastrous battle with the dragon.

He hikes to the top of the mountain in the dark, and when he reaches the peak, he takes one last look at the camp, and the dwarf's tent, before flying off into the night. We see him next as he is in the game; greedy, psychopathic, and deranged. Now he's a wandering vagrant, making enemies wherever he goes, no closer to amassing a hoard than when he was a boy. People typically underestimate him, and laugh him off as an insane wyrin; he meets this with fire and fury.

Something stirs inside Drogoz; maybe it's the idea of people hailing him as a savior, maybe it's the memory of the paladins that saved him from servitude, maybe it's that he flew all this way just for all the shit he was gonna steal to get stolen by somebody else. He wordlessly walks past the boy towards the village, caked in snow and sprinkled with icy shards, and makes his way to the town square where what looks like a young woman sits on a throne of ice; Evie, the winter witch. She's in the middle of ordering the village elderly to fight to the death as everyone is made to watch, when Drogoz loudly interrupts and challenges her. She's instantly outraged by the disrespect of the interloper, but quickly warms up to the idea, admitting that taking over this village was incredibly boring for her, and this fight might actually be fun.

Drogoz starts by doing the same things he does to attack unarmed villagers or dagger wielding highwaymen, but he's quickly put in his place by Evie's ice magic that sends him barreling into a snow bank. Initially embarrassed, eventually the heat of his jetpack and the fire caused by his explosions prove effective against the icy environment and Evie begins to lose some of her steam, letting Drogoz knock her off her groove with a couple rockets that almost hit. Evie slowly picks herself up, at first groaning in immense pain but eventually laughing hard and giggling at how fun it was. She looks around herself until she sees Drogoz, kneeling down on the floor of the basin. It's his jetpack; it was damaged in the fall and doesn't work anymore. Evie starts to laugh at how pathetic Drogoz's situation is, eventually settling down before getting on her broom and preparing to fly away, but she stops when Drogoz lets out a loud, hideous roar that transforms into sobbing. The curiosity gets the better of her and she gets a bit closer; asking him if he's really such a sore loser, but Drogoz ignores her and keeps crying. Something pulls on her; she hasn't felt empathy for another living creature in a long time, but something about this situation doesn't sit right with her.

Eventually, she decides if he wants to fly so much, she'll help him. She looks at her spellbook and before he knows it, he begins to float. She made his body lighter than air and he's now rising uncontrollably, writhing wildly as he tries to claw his way back to earth. She realizes her mistake and undoes the spell, to which he crashes back into the ground, and she gives a meager apology. Drogoz gets up, dusts himself off, gives her a stern look, and then sits back down, staring off into space. He's decided he'll sit here until he dies, his only means of becoming a true dragon dashed. Evie is flabbergasted by her formidable opponent's total lack of resolve, but when she tries to leave him to his death, she once again cant handle it and stops. She tells him she knows someone that can repair his jetpack, a weaponsmith in a nearby city, but that he'll have to act as her bodyguard/meatshield because she is NOT welcome in that city anymore ever since she crossed the leader of an underground criminal syndicate. They shake hands, and begin the journey together to get his jetpack back. After they do this, inevitably getting into trouble with Zhin and probably Lex too, they become fugitives on the run, travelling the world together and encountering fantastic trouble wherever they go, which involves other familiar faces we see in the game. End of season sees a lot of these figures all in one place; The king of most powerful kingdom in the realm is holding a tournament to find the strongest warriors, and have them compete in challenges of capturing points and pushing carts to find the most qualified to be his own personal guard, and have whatever they please as reward. Drogoz and Evie, now close partners with a friendly rivalry of fire vs ice going on, compete in the tournament with and against lots of other wacky matchups from the game and other characters from their adventures, hoping to finally get what they truly wanted all along; immense power and lots of wealth.

Actually, the inspiration for the last plot point introduced there, where a king holds a tournament with a grand prize that attracts all the champions of the realm, was inspired/copied from something somebody posted on 4chan(or it might have been a reddit or youtube comment) back when Paladins was just making waves during it's steam release. I remember it being the first explanation I heard of the "lore" behind Paladins, that the king of Crosswind hold is holding a tournament to see who shall become a Paladins and have the king's ear for whatever they desire. This was long before the whole paladins/magistrate crystals war became the official story, when the classic character's alpha lore was still all we had to go off of, and while that lore for each individual character is archived on the wiki, I've never seen that story about the king of Crosswind Hold again(It honestly might have just been some random anon's fanon). But I like it as a premise for WHY all the characters are fighting in all these set-pieces by controlling points and pushing carts. I always preferred it over the Hi-Rez lore of some big global war between all these factions and these world-ending catastrophes, I think it's neater to have all these individual characters just be fighting for themselves.
Maybe the later seasons of the show could introduce the abyssal/darkness characters through a big global catastrophe that makes all our characters have to fight for the greater good, though. For old time's sake.

There was a lot of fanon and speculation going off of the Alpha bios back in 2016-2017 or so when they first started to trickle out some hints at lore, so that probably was fanon, but it still fits well with what was available back then, when the closest thing we had to lore was an implication that all of the champions were adventurers who made their way to Crosswind Hold in search of treasure. (Why is why early game modes and maps were all about raiding vaults).
It all seemed so simple back then.

From what I noticed, Paladins in general started dying around mid-late 2021, and just kept slowly bleeding out from there. 2022 being such a bad year and almost no new champions coming out in 2023 made it clear the game was on the way out, and most posters jumped ship to other generals and games. That said I did only start playing in 2020, and people were already saying it was a dead game back then.
As this was happening the game itself was being bled dry for RoCo and DKO, neither of which achieved anything close to what Paladins did. As much as we shit on them, I really don't envy the people who were working on Paladins, they got screwed over by lorez, and it's a real shame how badly Erez and his buddies handled Paladins.
Looking at all the ex-dev stories it sounds like no matter what the game achieved, or how much it earned, lorez had just lost all faith in it after the OW comparisons and OB64, so they went on their usual spree of abandoning all their old games and making new ones to try and breed a new golden goose to replace Smite with, screwing over all their old employees who they hired to work on those titles and the players who loved those games in the process.
It looks like their decade+ of screwups is finally coming back to bite them in the ass though, we'll see how things play out..

Pretty much this. The Hunt, The New Direction was all just the appetizer all the shit that happened in between was the main course and Dark Depths was the end of the line. That Event Pass was quintessentially the perfect storm of a middle finger that Lo-rez could've given. A tone def battle pass which was like the 4th Ocean themed pass within a year, a pay for less battle pass scheme that was actually worse than before, fatigue of nothing but skins for content a community managed by people who clearly had so much disdain for people they did the exact opposite just to spite them while gaslighting them and speaking of spite, SALT to top it all off. It was like a master class in watching a company write its own suicide note. Everything that came after was just the after party.

Smite had/has the same problem, but also has more whales, a bigger team, and more budget, so they ended up with more variety than Paladins did. The justification both teams gave is that apparently edgy/demon skins sell really well and are one of/the only skin themes that consistently sell no matter what.
